However, you're only guaranteed that one of the words in "good, used" is true.

Suggestion
I highly recommend replacing the 3rd/6th gear thrust washer with CMS' improved part: things get very ugly and expensive when the original fails (lack of lubrication).
Leading evidence: 'Use " is true' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 3rd/6th gear thrust washer' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. It can certainly make good sense to swap in a good, used transmission.

As for used vs rebuilt, I'd always suggest rebuilt.

Could i change the drive shaft at the same time to make it work?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

As to what I do when rebuilding, a full rebuild is a complete tear-down, inspection, new bearings, synchros, seals, and resetting all set-up to factory spec.

I like to understand your intended use for the car, make ratio changes that work well across all six gears and give you the shift point and redline speeds that make sense.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 01 996 C4 has a transmission with 103,000 miles on it and the syncros are pretty worn. I am debating pulling it and doing the work myself, or looking for a lower milage
used one. There are a couple 996.1 c4 units out there, but many more 996.2 c4 units, but i understand the later ones are 2 longer. If i also use a 996.2 front drive shaft with a 996.2 transmission, will that work?
i appreciate any advice.
Since it requires so many specialized tools and presses, maybe pull the transmission and send it to GBox for a rebuild. With another used transmission it might be you're just getting another set of problems. GBox does warranty their work.

Joes got a valid point, but by the same token if you can find a unit from a low/mid mileage wrecked car chances are itll be in good condition. The six speed transmissions (even the .1s) are know to be quite robust
Well, never did a 996.1 to 996.2 awd tranny swap myself. But have read many posts on it. and seems to be exactly what you said. Use the 996.2 drive shaft and it will work. Not sure if other things are needed but don't remember any mention of it, other than the .2 drive shaft. Might want to check the parts sites for trany mounts/etc, and see if they are all the same.
As for used vs rebuilt, I'd always suggest rebuilt.
If you're good with transmissions, have a press and the cash to maybe buy any 996 trans-axle tools needed, you're good to go. But not sure any specific tools are needed other than adapters to press/pull in the bearings/seals and the usual tranny tools/supplies. You do need some good measuring tools to set all the clearances to minimum for a tight quite transaxle.
IIRR there is also a upgrade for the second gear 996 problem... Maybe with the large amount of cash you save doing it yourself, you could opt for a nice LSD while you're in there....
That being said, if you're ok with pulling the tranny maybe multiple times and can make an agreement with the used tranny seller for some type of warranty, then a used tanny might work out fine. You just might need too swap it out a few times till you get a good one, or might luck out on the first one..? You feeling lucky..?

Looking at rebuilds from various sources like Vertex, Coscogs, Gbox, etc. any one have any feedback or suggestions on rebuild shops? I am in new england.
also still wondering about the question of the c4 transmission from a 996.2 vs a 996.1. Could i change the drive shaft at the same time to make it work?
I did a tip to 6mt swap in my 93 c4s. I got a used unit from specialized German at a pretty decent price. I haven't put many miles on it yet, but have used it on a couple of track days with good results.
I am in Stow, MA and rebuild these (and most other manual) Porsche transmissions. The G96 is a difficult transmission to service, for a number of reasons including the need for a 50 ton press. I don't particularly care whether I get your business, but I would encourage you to research carefully before picking some of the sources you name.
It can certainly make good sense to swap in a good, used transmission. However, you're only guaranteed that one of the words in "good, used" is true. If you love the car and plan to own and drive it for a long time, a proper rebuild may be the best option. If on the other hand you plan to sell in a few years, often a used transmission with a honest, known history is a good option.
Good luck with the project!
As to what I do when rebuilding, a full rebuild is a complete tear-down, inspection, new bearings, synchros, seals, and resetting all set-up to factory spec. If you have an LSD, it gets torn down as well, any worn parts replaced. We can also do a smaller project, of course, for example attention to a worn / pop-out second gear. I highly recommend replacing the 3rd/6th gear thrust washer with CMS' improved part: things get very ugly and expensive when the original fails (lack of lubrication). There are different opinions as to mitigating the 2nd gear pop-out, but I have had good results with CMS' redesigned shift arrester (shift segment). If your transmission has the original open differential with two spider gears, replacing it with the improved, four spider version is a good idea especially if you track the car.
Albins appears to have shorter ring-and-pinion sets and alternate gear sets available at present. Their US distributor, Retro Sport, lists them:

So yes, those are also an option. I like to understand your intended use for the car, make ratio changes that work well across all six gears and give you the shift point and redline speeds that make sense.
I hope this answers your question!
