The remote lock/unlock on my 04 C4S has been inoperative for about 10 years now, so I've just used the key to lock/unlock the door since I didn't want to take it to the dealership and pay to reprogram.

Did a forum search and found some threads about replacing the latch mechanism, but they didn't mention the key/lock that I could find.

Fortunately I left the sunroof cracked and was able to reach in and pull the handle to open the door, so I can use the car, just can't lock the door.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The remote lock/unlock on my 04 C4S has been inoperative for about 10 years now, so I've just used the key to lock/unlock the door since I didn't want to take it to the dealership and pay to reprogram. Well yesterday I go to unlock the car and the key just spins in the cylinder. Ugh. Fortunately I left the sunroof cracked and was able to reach in and pull the handle to open the door, so I can use the car, just can't lock the door. Did a forum search and found some threads about replacing the latch mechanism, but they didn't mention the key/lock that I could find. So, anyone with some insight on what might have broken and how to fix it?

More than like the shaft that connects the key lock cylinder to the lock mechanism is dislodged or broken. The lock mechanism could be broken too. When Porsche moved to plastic on this part, the problem got worse. Yours should be metal.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for this. So either the shaft has snapped, or the mechanism in the door latch it slots into has broken. If it's the latch I should be able to just replace that part. If it's the shaft, is that a DIY replacement?

I don't believe that Porsche sells just the cylinder lock shaft (green arrow). If it where me, I'd order a used one on eBay. That being said, the 996 lock cylinder (green arrow) is made of metal, but the slot on the lock mechanism that the shaft inserts into is plastic. My guess is the lock mechanism will have to be replaced. You won't know until you get inside to examine it.

This is from a 99 Boxster after 250k miles. The little pin that holds the shaft fell out. The shaft just spins and you cant lock or unlock.. -Eric 99 986 04 996

Sounds like my issue and makes sense. I'll have to fire up the garage heater this weekend and give it a try at disassembly.
