POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The strap that stops the fuel tank cap from falling on the round has snapped. Is this something that can be done by "us" or is some weird and wonderful Porsche tool required to fix it? It looks to be retained somehow in the hinge???????

POST 2Original post

Buy a new cap. The "strap" is known to break. It is attached to the car's body by one screw. Amazon.com: Porsche 986 987 996 997 gas Fuel Cap +Clip GENUINE oem pertrol tank filler cover: Automotive Amazon.com: Porsche 986 987 996 997 gas Fuel Cap +Clip GENUINE oem pertrol tank filler cover: Automotive

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11609227

Thanks. Just took another look and mine is attached to the hinge mounting plate with what looks to be a large pop-rivet or some such. Looks like the only way to get it out is to drill the bugger.

POST 4Original post

The "pop rivet" is actually a Push Pin Rivet. Use a small screwdriver or a pointy pick and then push the middle of the rivet. The pin in the middle will move in allowing you to easily remove the broken strap. once out it has tapered prongs that snap into the fastening hole and tighten to hold as the pin is pushed back in.

POST 5Original post

My strap's broken too, but I don't think I want to spend $22 on it. I noticed that the Amazon seller in the link above is TC's Garage. I know the owner of TC's Garage well. Very active in PCA and a great guy. Give him a call (Tom Gould). Maybe he can beat the price via the Amazon listing, since he won't have to pay Amazon. POST 6Original post

I really like keeping every little thing perfect on my Porsche. Just seems right. Plus the tether lets you hang the gas cap from the lid, no scratched paint, no lost gas cap...just Porsche coolness I do love the Porsche aluminum gas caps. Spendy...but pretty...But have been told from several sources they don't work well on 996. The cap breather hole gets blocked causing CEL. Here are a set of all aluminum not the plastic ones. gorgeous. http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com/..._Gas_Cap_.html

POST 7Original post

I'll be damned...... I never knew the gas cap strap had a hanger on the filler lid, I just let it dangle !! I sure wish I could justify buying the aluminium cap, but $140 + delivery to Australia is a little rich for me....

POST 9Original post

I have the aluminum "look" cap. Yes... its actually plastic! Never had a CEL in 5 years with regards to the cap. The cap in the above photo is not a Porsche cap but an aftermarket "Petroleum" cap?

POST 10Original post

Funny story: I was filling up at a gas station and there were 3 dudes admiring my car and 2 hawt chicks. They were looking at everything I was doing as its not too often you see people putting gas in through their front fender. Just when I took off the cap, the strap broke and me not realizing it, dropped the cap. I know they all saw the strap breaking. That was a hilarious and embarrassing moment. At that time, they probably decided they wouldn't be buying a Porsche without even knowing about the IXX. Lol

POST 11Original post

Mine is a 99 job and doesn't have the restraining strap. It probably broke before I got the car. So I leave it next to the window wiper. IT says in English and German on the cap. "Turn to click".

POST 12Original post

Does anyone know where you can get the cable strap for the aluminum one? I have that cap but no cable and I end up putting the cap on my wipers every time I fill up

POST 13Original post

maxspeed one is aftermarket I think the oem one looks better...It's one of those stupid little things that I like... it's plastic but peeerty http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...ode=996AirFuel

POST 14Original post

I think you have to make the strap out of wire cable

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 11610772

Damn, even harder to justify getting one at that price now.

POST 16Original post

Pelican has a plastic one, with strap by the OEM supplier for $14.25. fuel cap strap clip for $1.00. Currently, as per Hurdi, I just use the wiper to rest it on. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...-329&I1.y=-136

POST 19Original post

I bet other caps are an exact fit just need to go to the junkyard and start hunting. The cap gasket itself is fairly universal, pulled mine off a Neon. My TDI caps look a lot like the 996.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 11617990

I never noticed the hook for the strap on my truck's gas cap, either, lol....

POST 21Original post

Easy fix: zip tie. Holds fine, and nobody will see it but you (unless you're one of these fancypants who ponied up for a purty-lookin' gas cap, in which case you'll want to show it off and zip ties will look ghetto).

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 11647588

Get the new cap from pelican ! Yeah - seems at this age they are all breaking ! I never realized there was hook for cable either ! In all my other cars - edge of cap itself has slot in filler door ...

POST 23Original post

I was talking to Tom over at TC's Garage... he says he sells about 20 of them a week (or maybe he said month). Anyway, looks like the gas cap strap is the new IMSB. Oh, and I confirmed with him that he can sell it cheaper if you order directly from him, rather than through his Amazon listings.

POST 24Original post

That's annoying alright. What's more annoying is the plastic hinge on the gas cap door broke on mine today. Of all things. I've never seen anyone bring this up before. Hopefully Krazy glue works. It's a pain to get that metal hinge spring back on too. We'll see if this works or I have to get a real fix.

POST 25Original post

They sell the whole hindge assembly theres a short and a long gas cap strap.

POST 26Original post

Well, now we know, Krazy glue works only on TV. Off to get a real fix. This should be good...

POST 27Original post

Thanks. Seems these strap are prone to breaking. Maybe it isn't worth getting a new one. Placing it on top of the pump.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 11773745

Not really strange considering strap is made from plastic which deteriorate over time.

POST 29Original post

The first thing that I got rid of when I bought my 2000 Jaguar S-type was the gas cap tether. I thought only the British would be foolish enough to put a tether on the gas cap so that when the gas station attendant let the gas cap drop, the tether was certain to cause the gas cap to scratch or ding the fender. Then, less than a year later, I bought my 2001 911, and imagine my surprise when I saw the gas cap tether. At least with the 911, if you let go of the cap, it dangles just below the wheel well opening and therefore can't scratch the fender. In any event, I used a wire cutter to remove the plastic swivel ring that is attached to the tether, and then a mini pry-bar to remove the plastic push pin that attaches the other end of the tether to the car. If yours is broken, I would just do what I did and eliminate all traces of it's existence. Does anyone know if the tether is a federal requirement or something? Because every car I've bought since 2000 has it.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 11774830

Yes. It's similar to those tags on pillows. If you remove it, there are severe penalties.

POST 31Original post

i used fishing line when strap broke on wife's boxster- didn't know about the hanger on the door either- just went out to my 07 997 to ck out the door hanger thingy & discovered my strap was broken right at cap- drilled small hole in cap to reinsert strap & secured it-

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 11778392

Hahaha! I really don't see the point of the tether. I mean, if you drove off without putting the cap back on and you have a tether, you still risk spilling gasoline all over the highway, plus you're going to have a bunch of scratches/dings from the cap banging against the fender. If you don't have a tether, you're going to figure it out eventually and go back to the gas station where you last filled up. Now, if you leave the gas cap behind and you're on a 400 mile trip, well, then you've got a bit of a problem.

POST 33Original post

I like the tether. It does a nice job of keeping the cap near the rest of the car. The only negative I see is that it adds weight, but not very much. Did someone really complain that it was too expensive? Or was that the 50 cent pin that holds it in place? Blimey. Hmmm, wonder what a Porsche dealer would charge to replace it?

POST 34Original post

My 987.2 fuel cap tether broke too. With a 2012 Honda CR-V parked next to the Cayman I checked compatibility of the Honda fuel cap: 100%. Same thread, but the seal is against the inside of the neck, and not the top like the Porsche. The outer flange on the cap sits just like the Porsche, and the quality of the molding is comparable. No Check Engine Light, and the tether securing tag even fits in an alternate hole on the Cayman: The only issue is the new Honda part appears to be twice the price of the new Porsche part. So, no real reason not to use the OEM, except perhaps the Honda uses a very flexible synthetic rubber tether, and the Porsche uses that hard plastic that will likely again break... I've ordered the OEM Porsche cap regardless. Pity that fake aluminum one is just plastic. Your millage may vary!

POST 35Original post

Just make one out of thin steel cable (or heavy gauge electrical wire in your favorite color), some heat shrink and crimps and your good for life!

POST 36Original post

Hah! Amazing stuff I learn on here. There's a frickin hanger for the cap strap!!!!!!! And here I thought it was just supposed to hang over the fill cap cover. (Which I thought was awfully tacky) Thanks guys!

POST 37Original post

If you eliminate the tether you now have a lightweight 996... save .0000000002 lbs. Seriously tough, mine broke and I replaced it for like $13 for an OEM part. Although I kind of liked it better without. Less chance of scratching the side of your car even when using the hanger.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 15598972

Indeed! Amazon shipped OEM Porsche part to my door in one week from heck knows where, and it literally takes ten seconds to refit. The new one incidentially uses s synthetic rubber, like the Honda, and not plastic. Possibly last longer, though at USD20 or less for ten years' service, there's not a lot to complain about. Unless of course you bought an 'aluminum look' plastic one...

POST 39Original post

When I bought my car in 2017, the strap was broken. Replacing the gas cap and tether, with one from Pelican, was the first thing I did for my car!

POST 40Original post

Anyone know what that slot is for? center top right. I don't have a hook to put the tether strap into so it just hangs into the wheel well opening when filling up. Pictures I've found online are just like mine. Looks like it may be for another locking pin to slide into. Boxster maybe?

POST 42Original post

My 996.2 has an illustration that shows what our hook is for. I was wondering how y'all didn't know it was there. Now I know they all don't have the illustration. I have the aluminum look gas cap. I picked it up cheap (used) last summer from the Rennlist Classifieds. It has a rubber tether.

I used this exact product for a 2005 Saab 9-2x Aero, which is a rebodied Subaru WRX. I replaced the lanyard, instead of the whole cap, because I wanted to retain the Saab-labeled cap (which is now difficult to find) instead of having a Subaru-branded cap. The lanyard works really well. It is thicker than the original, so it doesn't look the same as OEM, but hopefully will last longer. For a 996, I think I'd just replace the whole cap with strap. Unless I'm missing something, the aluminum one doesn't seem like a good idea because it seems like it will weigh more and be a lot more likely to scratch paint (especially in NJ where we don't have the option to fuel ourselves and are reliant on the attendant to be careful (News flash: they aren't )).

I decided not to buy the crappy rubber one on my 997.2. So I made my own out of coated steel and now offer it for all 986/987/996/997 owners. Made in the USA with a one year warranty. Doesn't scratch the paint, probably the last one you'll ever buy. https://www.facebook.com/share/1E6HN9Kw5W/ My install/ removal videos You Tube You Tube
