Unless the oil was changed annually I'd proceed with caution.

I think the tires are pretty old too, I'm getting a slight intermittent vibration at speeds, I'm hoping it's the tires but most likely a slightly bent wheel.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, last year I posted about me looking at a different C4S, I ended up buying a 2008 Z06 instead and sold it after about a year, it wasn't my thing.
So I'm back looking at 996 C4S and I found one that's really clean and I wanted to see what you think. I'll probably end up getting it for 35k.
I have a speed shop that I had address the heads on my Z06 that does a lot of IMS/RMS that can do the job.
I see a ton of RUF stickers on the car that the dealer is telling me it's factory but I have a feeling it's like slapping an M\\\ badge on a non M car.
No service records, several owners although the dealer days it's only a 3 owner car because the previous owner was a dealer and ended up having to title it in his name during a divorce.
For me, the price seems ok since the car is so clean and looks really nice.
I'm just hoping to get into something, drive it for a year and not take a big hit when I resell it. I'm supposed to pick it up Wednesday.

The Ruf and Porsche badges are tacky. The red and glue on aluminum trim should be burned with fire. I'd be cautious of any car that was treated like that.
I'm no purist, but someone farkled that car right into tackytown -- of course, all easily removed (including the wheels)... I hope that's the plan.
otherwise, what's not to like about a blk/blk c4s. The mileage is a tad worrisome, I'd definitely spend $500 on a PPI to avoid 10x the cost of repairs from a 15yr old car.
good luck and hope this one hits the spot
I actually dig the red and the wheels, it was the first interior that I actually said I liked!
I will be removing the RUF badges immediately. I am also not a huge fan of the park bench wing.
With the PPI, how detailed are they? When I sold my other cars they buyer had PPI's and i wasn't impressed with their findings.
I will probably end up driving the car a bit over the year. Probably 4-6k miles.
I agree, If it were low miles but around 50-60k id be happier. Is it me or does 38k seem really high on price. Does the dealer know its a 996, or is he just asking a lot because he over paid for it based on the name Porsche?
I find these little independent dealers over price these a lot because they say Porsche on the back lol. They think they are worth 100k based on the name and nothing else. I suggest this guys looks elsewhere for a car.
I have it at 35k.
I know he's been sitting on it for about 6 months. He was asking 42k at first.
I've just been watching these for a while now and the real clean low miles are in this price range.
I say you load up your ammo with facts, like lack of service history, IMSB, RMS replacement cost and offer $30K and be prepared to walk if you can't ink the deal (pending PPI of course). For not much more you can get a turbo!
Do you know what the Blue Book value is?
I agree with the others......earlier this year i spent months looking for a C4S that met my expectations. Mine is a 04 with 60k on the clock. Its a crazy clean car which i purchased from Porsche of Orlando. They were asking 26k. I paid 28k and that was after they agreed to do the clutch, IMS and RMS.
That asking price is high, even for the mileage which is concerning on its own.
GET A PPI!
I'll echo what others have said. Price seems exceptionally high for an '03. Lack of service history certainly a negative and given the appearance of the engine it doesn't seem to be well cared for by any means. I'd check the dates on the Toyo tires which aren't exactly top notch. It's easy to fall in love with a C4S and you can remove the silly emblems as you've already stated. If you really like the car and price isn't that big a consideration go for it but
like many said a PPI would definitely give you some bargaining chips if you haven't already purchased. Hope things work out for the best whatever happens. Like they say, Porsche...there is no substitute.
p.s. I'm a little curious about your Z06 experience if you wouldn't mind a few details. Been considering a Corvette purchase somewhere down the road and I would definitely be looking at an older Z06.
The Z06 was a lot of fun but at the end of the day, it was a corvette. Extremely unrefined, made tons drive train noise at low speeds. It's like no engineering went into making anything remotely refined. I'm a young guy that has a high tolerance for stuff too.
To be honest I took my wife out for a nice dinner in the Vette and felt stupid rolling up in it, it was strange. I actually started wearing American flag tank tops while I drove it and felt much more comfortable. True Story, it could only be driven with an American flag tank on.
On a side note it had a grenade as well, as soon as I purchased it I had to address the heads at the tune of 2300. Everything else was cheap, alternator and starter went out and it was like $400 to have them replaced. Parts were cheap.
If this was a 30-32k car I'd be all over it. I think you guys are right it being too high at 35. I think the dealer over paid for it. Between new tires, ims RMS clutch ect as soon as I get it I'm going to be driving a 40k 996 which next year when I sell it will be a 32k car. Too expensive for a year.
I paid 37k for the Vette, put 2300 into it and 6000 miles and ended up selling it for 36k 8 months later. I'm looking for that type of deal on my new Porsche purchase.
Maybe I'd have to jump up into a turbo...
Thanks for the feedback. I recently drove a 2016 Stingray and must say the ride was absolutely superb. Plenty of power, great handling, smooth as can be, good brakes, can't say anything but positives. Maybe Chevrolet has finally figured it out.
Sounds like you didn't pull the trigger on this car so good luck in your search, for me that was part of the fun.
This is a nice low miles example. Plus, Porsche put a new motor in the car in 2010. There is only 13,000 miles on the new motor. If you could get for closer to $30K, that would be a good deal.

I like this one. I wonder when they do the engine replacement if they address the IMS or if they replace it with the same problematic engine.
I also think that most of the time it is unrealistic seeing something for sale for $36,000 and expecting to get that large of a price reduction.
I'll let the experts speak to that topic, but it's my understanding that Porsche will replace the engine with the most current IMS bearing. In this case, the IMS would be the larger bearing found in the M97. Much better than the smaller single row bearing that the car came with off the factory line. That's good or bad depending on how you view it. The larger single row bearing is more robust, but can fail and will cost more to replace since it requires the engine to be opened up.
So this is on BAT and it's close to my house.

I will bet the market will bring this to 38k.
I think well sorted, low mileage C4S's are going to be hard to find on the cheap anymore.
I've been searching for 997s now too and there are only a handful across the nation available...
I should have bought the one I posted about...
Love that car on BAt. Great color and the factory aero is rare and gorgeous. Mileage is a bit scary but sounds like it has good history. That looks like a great candidate for a LN solution and long term ownership.
So I ended up purchasing the OG car with all the tacky stuff stuck to it. I found out that it has the IMS addressed in 2011, that was the big deciding factor.
Drove it 200 miles home and mechanically it feels perfect.
I will say that the ride is harsh, worse that the Z06. Very uncomfortable on a 3 hour drive but whatever.
Now I'm in the process of getting it sorted. I will be removing all the stuck on **** on it. Including the fake interior pieces that I thought I liked.
Really looking forward to driving this Porsche.
I highly doubt it is really a RUF - Norma;;y the RUF badge would be center rear - I bit too many badges for me, love the color and rear wing - best of luck
I think the wheels are larger too.
I got all the stuck on trim pieces off, it came off easily and looks great underneath.
I found out it has a built in radar detector..
Windows are getting tinted tomorrow morning (I hate untinted windows), fister d mod in the afternoon, paint correction and detail Wednesday.
Then I'll get out my camera for some pictures.
A few problems I'm running into-
The reverse lock out (the thing that blocks you from putting it in reverse) doesn't lock you out all the time and will freely slide all the way over.
The bose MOST system I have is the one that's hard to upgrade. I was trying to figure out if the only hope of me doing anything aftermarket cheaply is that one adapter that comes from China.
Other than that it's great, not bad for a 15 year old Porsche.

Very nice C4S! Interior looks excellent.
Did you check the pressures on the tires yet? Sometimes the service departments tend to over inflate them, and you can lower them a bit to help with a little suspension harshness.
Looking forward to your pics after the detail.
So looking forward to getting everything sorted.
The radio is killing me though. I have one of the fm modulators but I'm super sound spoiled. I'll look forward to getting that sorted also!
I think the tires are pretty old too, I'm getting a slight intermittent vibration at speeds, I'm hoping it's the tires but most likely a slightly bent wheel. Luckily these wheels aren't terribly expensive.
I had a local exhaust shop do the Fister mod to my exhaust, it's perfect. Awesome.
Windows tinted
I also found my shifter cable popped out of a harness fixing my issue with the reverse lock out.
Wrong lug nuts were used on the wheels fixing my vibration issue.
Things are looking good.
Dropped it off for paint correction and detail.
Pics coming soon!
Hi,
nice car. Like the wheels. Not too enthusiastic about the wing. In my opinion it spoils the already very nice back side of the car. I have a 2003 4s cabrio. Change the oil every year. Did the RMS and had the IMS checked. Changed the water pump for a Gt3 model ( higher output) the thermostat, and the set of temperature of the radiator fans has been lowered. Now the engine temp stays within normal limits, even in The south of France.
Since you own a 2003 car with the BOSE system, it has these MOST bus connections. Therefore difficult to tamper with. I installed a simple double DIN Sony system, Bluetooth and telephone and rear vieux camera. The subwoofers in the doors are powered by a separate amp. Changed the speaker in the front and rear with FOCALS. ( you have to adapt the mounting rings ( see YouTube) bypassed completely the original amp and the most system. The wiring harness can be found in the frunk ( facing the front of the car on your lower left. With a multimeter it is a relatively simple job to find the corresponding wires.
I think the sound is OK, certainly better than with with old system. And that for a comparatively modest price. In all I paid less then €500. ( and three days of labor)
cheers
These C4S are probably the best looking 996 model. Maybe because of the combination of the wide body and center reflector? Curious, you say you had the "IMS checked". How is that possible? The bearing is sealed, right? Are you saying they removed the flange and just checked for play on the center bearing shaft? Or did they somehow remove the outer seal and closely examine the ball bearings?
One thing that concerns mean about the post-dual row bearing cars (small single row IMSB) is that they are more prone to failure. OP - what bearing are you going to replace in your new C4S?
I would suggest a skid plate for the engine if u have speed bumps and curbs in your area. The previous owner of my car did not have one thus i got the car for the cost of a roller.
That was one of my first mods.
Its already got some deep nasty scratches from entering into a newly finished parking lot.
They made it much too steep for my at-the-time stock suspension C2.
I know not to pull in there now.
I wonder what would have happened had I not had the skid plate.
