Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been having my oil tested with each change since about 33k miles. The aluminum level has sat stead between 3-5ppm consistently until this last reading which jumped to 7. All other data indicates it is good and well within range or better. Anyone seen minor spikes like this and wonder if it is the beginning of a problem?

POST 2Original post

What is the standard deviation or precision of these analysis? If it is 1-3ppm then 7 is nothing to worry about. It is within or very close to the precision delta of the analysis. Anyway when looking at such low values, a slighly higher reading would not worry me. I would be more looking for certain tendencies over time. If your further subsequent analysis results would show a consistently rising amount, then it would be suspicious and telling you something. For a single data point like this it would only worry me if it jumps significantly i.e. 15-20 or higher.

POST 3Original post

I have tested my oil for the last nine oil changes and my aluminum is starting to rise. Last one was 13, the time before was 9. However 5 and 6 UOAs back it was 17 and 18. I think my bore scoring is just going to run its course until I need to replace/rebuild engine.

POST 4Original post

I would suggest posting your complete UOA over on Bobistheoilguy.com. I've been hanging out there since 2004, it's full of some amazing oil engineers. My thoughts is that with all the aluminum in out engines, yes, something is starting to wear. What kind/weight of oil have you been using?

POST 5Original post

I've been using mostly 5w40. I have used 5w50 a few times but it didn't seem to change much.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's mine over the past several tests. Interesting to see comparison info on a higher mileage engine. I'm using DT40 and have since the first oil change on this report. What's the copper reading related to in our engines?

POST 8Original post

I would continue doing UOAs and if you see the aluminum levels increase into a double digit range, that will probably indicate that you have cylinder scoring in progress, however if you don't have any symptoms like ticking or one tail pipe being dirtier than the other, I would not worry about it for now as oil consumption isn't bad yet, although it would appear it has been increasing slowly over the last few oil changes. Can't say you don't drive your car though! That's some serious miles you have put on the car in one year.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its a daily driver, so I'm going to rack up some serious miles over the next year too. Trying to get my other car on the road soon which should start to lower the annual mileage a little. The oil volume I've been adding isn't well recorded, so I don't know that I'd rely much on that, but it is probably something I need to start doing more accurately given the change in other values.

POST 10Original post

I have been dealing with all the signs of right bank bore scoring for 25k miles. I've been using Ceratec and not pounding on the engine. The knocking doesn't seem to have gotten worse over the last 18 monhs and the oil consumption is steady at around 1 qt per 1200 miles. I am pretty sure I have never seen it actually spit oil out the left rear tailpipe. I am hoping to get another 10-20k miles before the inevitable happens.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have noticed that the left exhaust is slightly dirtier than the right. Is the right more common as a scoring issue?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 15284885

Yes, the left exhaust represents the cylinders that are on the passenger side of the car. My right exhaust doesn't even get dirty, but my left is usually sooty within 2 or 3 days of driving.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 15284885

Yes the right cilinder bank is more prone to scoring as it generally runs hotter then bank 1. Main cause for this is that the coolant that goes to bank 2 flows through a channel in the block which passes over the sump. The coolant heats already up a bit before it enters bank 2.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What are some of the other signs of scoring aside from the increased level of soot on the exhaust, and ticking? I have seen videos of the ticking that were clearly one-sided. Is there also an increased wearing of ignition components on bank 2?
