One note, I did order the Porsche shifter alignment tool, but it does NOT fit on the upgraded short-shifter mechanism once it's installed into the shifter carrier.
Leading evidence: 'Install into the shifter carrier' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect ball and socket and pin connection' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

At least so far, I'd recommend the upgraded bushings and shifter mechanism.

I'm thinking I could replace the bearings and shifter handle itself on my old 996 one since it's already out of the car, and simply swap that one in when I go to replace the 997 one.

I want to keep the mildly shorter throw (at least) that the 997 provided, while upgrading the feel/precision using the machined metal parts that Ben provides?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey All,
I replaced the shifter on my 2002 C2 with a 997 shifter for the slightly reduced throw that the 997 shifter has. I kept my 996 shifter assembly just in case I ever wanted/needed to go back to it or return car to original.
I would like to further improve shifter feel, so I purchased one of Ben's shifter upgrade kits, that includes the machined cups and shifter handle. What I'm wondering is whether or not the base housing for the 996 shifter and the 997 one are essentially the same. I'm thinking I could replace the bearings and shifter handle itself on my old 996 one since it's already out of the car, and simply swap that one in when I go to replace the 997 one. Is there any difference between the 996 and 997 shifter bases that determines the geometry or shifter throw lengths that would lead me to update the 997 one instead of the 996 one? I want to keep the mildly shorter throw (at least) that the 997 provided, while upgrading the feel/precision using the machined metal parts that Ben provides?
Any thoughts/feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards just upgrading the 997 shifter as well, though I wasn't ever considering damaging/altering two shifters. If I just upgrade the 997 shifter, I'd continue to keep the original, unaltered 996 shifter on the shelf in case I or someone else ever wants to go back to stock. Or, if I upgraded the 996 shifter and put that one in the car, the 997 shifter would sit on the shelf unchanged.
I'll probably continue to leave the original alone and pull the 997 shifter out and upgrade that one as soon as my alignment/lock tool that I ordered from eBay arrives.
If you are in a hurry, and your current shifter is working fine, you don't need the green lock tool - just mark the shifter cables with a sharpie before you remove the locking collars, put the replacement shifter in, aligning your sharpie marks with the new locking collars. Or, just disconnect the ball and socket and pin connection on the spring loaded locking collars without touching the adjustment... Sometimes we overcomplicate things...
I am in the exact same position. I upgraded to the 997 shifter and my car is an absolute blast to drive now. I purchased a short shift kit from China (same as Ben, we will see). I plan to replace it in the 996 base, then sell the 997 shifter... or if I prefer the 997, sell the short shifter kit.
When I did mine 2 weeks ago, I was totally confused about all that alignment stuff. I just clipped off the ball&socked connectors and reinstalled them on the new shifter. Really simple process.
Hey all,
Just to close the loop on this post, I wound up just pulling the newer 997 shifter out of the car this afternoon, and upgrading that one with Ben's short shifter kit and metal bushings. Everything went together fine. New shifter feel is much more exact and precise, though I've only driven it around the block a couple of times.
One note, I did order the Porsche shifter alignment tool, but it does NOT fit on the upgraded short-shifter mechanism once it's installed into the shifter carrier. That meant I had to rely on the sharpie marks I put on the cables before I pulled the shifter out of the car. So, that wound up being $10 I didn't need to spend (as I believe others have said). I just figured using the alignment tool would give me a more precise fit, just turns out I didn't need it and the car seems to shift fine.
Thanks for the feedback earlier in the thread. At least so far, I'd recommend the upgraded bushings and shifter mechanism. Looking forward to doing a little more spirited driving in the next few days to break it in.
