I just installed an OEM 997.424.983.00 short shifter and it has zero play.

Replacement with a 997 was my first thought, but thought I would check the forum to see if anyone had developed a fix for this issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car came installed with a B&M short shift kit. I've been slowly picking off projects to improve the car over the years and now this one is in my crosshairs. My shifter has about 2" of free-play while sitting in neutral and all of the sloppiness appears to be caused by a white tab in the mechanism. Any thoughts on how I can stiffen up this piece and remove the free-play?
Thanks!
Sloppiness in which direction?
That part really only comes into play translating left and right movement of the lever into fore and aft movement of the left shifter cable. The spacing between the 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 is fixed by the transmisson and it's linkage.
I'd poke around on where the cables are affixed, both on the shifter assembly, and under the car on the bracket bolted to the transmission. They are both notorious for causing shifting problems.
I just had an oddball one where the plastic cup that holds the cable end onto the shifter cable was damaged and it created a very mushy shift that was able to go further forward (1,3,5) than it should have. Not that this is your issue, but only to say, the cables matter as much as the shifter assembly itself.
I think Function First has a shift right solution (
http://www.function-first.com/produc...right-solution
) that replaces that assembly and tightens that all up, if you are looking to throw money at your shifter assembly. The 997 shifter is a nice upgrade, and if you get a new one, those parts are all likely to have better clearances than your current shifter. I'm a fan of the Numeric (
https://numericracing.com/store/shifter100/
), but you have to pay to play.
Thanks for the reply.
Sloppiness is from left to right but the shifts are crisp and hold well when they are in gear, so I don't think it is a cable issue. Imagine shifting from 2nd to 3rd without feeling the "gate" and that is the best I can describe what is happening. Normally the lever would spring into the neutral position when pulling out of 2nd and hold firm until the driver directs it to the next gear. Not the case currently.
I've driven the 997 and loved that shifter. Replacement with a 997 was my first thought, but thought I would check the forum to see if anyone had developed a fix for this issue.
I'll check out Function First as well. Thanks for the tip.
Correct 996 factory short shift is made by b&m and is black rather than blue with the Porsche genuine part stamp on it. The blue units shown in OPs image are aftermarket ones.
As others have said, options ordered by cost and benefit (subjective) are:
- standard 997
- OEM 997 SSK
- 996/997 + function first
- Numeric racing
