Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
The B&M and copies are likely the ones you found online.
Leading evidence: 'ones you found online' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ones you found online' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Set screw' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
My 996.2 had a set screw holding the factory **** on.

I have a Rennline that has 2 set screws that I like, but there are lots of options.

If it’s definitely the blade type I will likely use JB epoxy.

You could also reuse the stock boot - I just cut the **** off a stock shifter, and used safety wire to attach the boot to the milled groove in the base of the Rennline shifter.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
Can one of you gentleman tell me how to mount an aftermarket shift **** to a 996?
it is just a basic pool 🎱 with a threaded hole. If I am not mistaken our cars do not screw on.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian
Depends on what you install. Are you keeping old cover? I believe some 996.1 have set screw. 996.2 is removed by prying up cover. Put in 2nd gear. Twist and pull old shifter (away from face). The stalk is a metal blade. You may need an adapter for the screw-on.
Ditto what hatchetf15 said. They are a bladed shaft, not screw on type.
IMO, you are better off getting one designed to fit the style of shift lever.
I have a Rennline that has 2 set screws that I like, but there are lots of options.
If it’s definitely the blade type I will likely use JB epoxy. I used it on my 91 C4 and it worked well. I was not positive what type we had. I am still open to ideas from others though. For me the Ball type is where it’s at.
which short shifter is the best or should I said best type for the money. I see plenty from China on eBay but I refuse to knowingly install anything in my 996 from China.
The OEM design is pretty clever how it installs. I'd stick with something that is plug and play OEM option rather than adding a screw element or something that can go wrong. Back in the day I added a Momo shifter to a car and it gave me nothing but trouble, the screw and **** was constantly slipping.
I went this route too! This is the cleanest and easiest install IMO. Both F1 and Rennline are very high quality - you will not be disappointed. Also, if you replace the shift boot you might want buy a new Shift Boot Retaining Frame (Part #: 996-552-655-01). The leather boot I bought from Rennline was already notched to fit the frame! Good luck!
Keep in mind whatever you do, you'll probably want to be able to remove it. I can't take my center console out with it installed, for example. While that may not seem like a big thing, I have that center console removed way more often than I'd ever planned to.
I have this one:

(made in Milton, Vermont, USA - I've seen the shop)
The function first is nice:

(no idea where manufactured, but the owner is a really good guy)
I've been tempted to try one of these:

I think there about a million shifter threads on Rennlist. My favorite is the Numeric:
https://numericracing.com/store/shifter100/
(Numeric is in Florida, no idea where they are manufactured). Function first is a great company, and they sell a kit:
http://www.function-first.com/produc...right-solution
(couple it with a 997 shifter for best results). The B&M and copies are likely the ones you found online. I do not have any idea where B&M are made. I think the eBay copies are mostly from China.
I have a short shifter, maybe a B&M, maybe a copy, no markings on it, in a 996 shifter assembly that I posted in the classifieds at one point. I think I was asking $100 plus shipping. Cheap way to try out a short shifter. I don't care for the notchiness, I replaced it with an OEM 997 shifter (one of mine has a Numeric the other OEM 997).
I agree with the prior poster on the replacement, and getting a new frame. I tried that on one, and it worked okay - I didn't like the very thick leather on the boot I used. You could also reuse the stock boot - I just cut the **** off a stock shifter, and used safety wire to attach the boot to the milled groove in the base of the Rennline shifter.
This is what the shift shaft will look like once you remove the ****:
