I know the correct install is to push the filter until it engages on the motor end(confusing the first time I changed my filter).

One other thing you may want to consider is after cleaning the oil filter canister is to fill it with fresh oil.

Suggestion
Why not loosen your filter canister and push up for engagement, then replace any spilled motor oil?

Suggestion
I like it because it is easy to change compared to the filter can.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I pushed the oil filter into the housing (black canister) instead of onto the motor end, and then threaded filter housing on. Should I remove and redo the filter? 🙃
Thank you.
I know the correct install is to push the filter until it engages on the motor end(confusing the first time I changed my filter). Not sure what consequences of not engaging the filter element. Why not loosen your filter canister and push up for engagement, then replace any spilled motor oil?
I seen it done both ways. One other thing you may want to consider is after cleaning the oil filter canister is to fill it with fresh oil. The provides immediate lubrication when the motor is first started after an oil change.
Thanks for all the fast responses! Lost a bit of sleep last night thinking about it. Not sure why I did it the way I did. First time with a cartridge filter.
Buy a new cartridge filter. Remove the canister and replace it. You will only lose a little bit of oil. The deal is...what if the cartridge filter did not align with the mount on the engine and is now crushed, allowing unfiltered oil into the engine. You want that for the next 5,000 miles? I know it seems really overly ****, but in my mind...well it would be worth total peace of mind. Most of the time when I think I did something wrong, it turns out I did something wrong. And, also what I would recommend is to get the LN spin-on oil filter adapter and put the canister in the recycle bin. Makes changing the oil filter a breeze. That's my two cents on the subject....
Stoped at my local dealership and picked up a new filter....came with a new housing as well. $28.😎
filter can only go one way. Once bottomed out in housing, I don't 'think' it can move off center enough to not line up with motor side. And if it did, housing would be very difficult to thread on while crushing filter cartridge?
am I wrong assuming cartridge gets 'sandwiched' between housing stop in bottom (see pic) and motor end? Sorry for non correct terms.
should have just done it right first time😉
That's not technically a "housing stop". That is the filter by-pass that is sometime troubling because of failures which will allow unfiltered oil to get drawn back into the engine. It is a sealing top sitting on a spring and is snapped into the bottom of the filter housing. The spin on adapter and use of the proper spin-on filter will eliminate this worry. Many opinions on this. I like it because it is easy to change compared to the filter can. Plastic can full of oil always made me nervous hanging beneath the car...but that's just me.
Correct, the filter has to seat against both the bottom and top surfaces for the filter to work for all oil to pass through its membrane (aside from bypass mechanisms). So it was probably fine before you changed it, but still good that you decided to check to make sure.
Since the new OE filter comes with a new housing and bypass valve, I’m wondering if the spin on conversion is really necessary, since it eliminates the argument of the spring weakening over time and allowing the bypass to open inappropriately.
no apologies needed.
I have read here where a few are going back to canister style filter from spin on. I'm going to stick with the ease of examining the cartridge filter for now.
