I installed a double DIN Kenwood unit using a kit from Car Audio Innovations.

I purchased from CAI and had it installed locally, pricey but glad I did it.

The only thing I kept was the speakers but those will be changed sometime soon.

This is mine, used a Kenwood 8160S, not sure what's the part number for US.

it is the cheapest carplay unit, the only downside is no hd radio but there isnt much around my area worth a crap anyway so spotify will be used most of the time
Clean looking, i think it'll integrate better than something

Suggestion
It's pretty clean looking, I think it'll integrate better than something with glossy plastic bezels (like the JVC CarPlay one for $400, or the Pioneer ones).

Suggestion
I could have easily bought a 6 ch frunk amp, but choose to save more money and use the frunk amp to drive the subs and the HU to drive the front and rear speakers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking at swapping out head unit after seeing a video with an aftermarket touchscreen unit that had Bluetooth, navigation, etc. Anyone know what brand that is or have suggestions on options for upgrades like this?
i just ordered this one, it doesnt have built in nav but it has apple carplay so you can use the maps from that.

has good reviews, i was going to go with a kenwood unit but there are to many complaints about carplay interference noise
in the reviews on youtube there seems to be delays sometimes but at least with the hour i have played with it so far its been perfect

I purchased my upgraded head unit (an Alpine single-DIN) through Car Audio Innovations (
www.cai-store.com
). They were great to work with and I highly recommend them. They sell a variety of both single- and double-DIN head units. Get their kit with their pre-made harness which makes mating an aftermarket head unit to the Porsche wiring uber-simple. Good luck.
This is mine, used a Kenwood 8160S, not sure what's the part number for US. The fascia is a Connects2 kit.
Unit comes with BT, CarPlay, Android Auto, Garmin and etc... pretty much the full works. I believe in US, there is an equal model with DAB.
I installed a double DIN Kenwood unit using a kit from Car Audio Innovations. The installation went smoothly, looks good, and has worked perfectly. I chose a Kenwood because they have Garmin navigation; my unit is pre-CarPlay, so I can't speak to any problems they've had with that.
I'm thinking of going with the Sony XAV-AX100 - it's a $500 double-DIN receiver that has support for both CarPlay and Android Auto. It's pretty clean looking, I think it'll integrate better than something with glossy plastic bezels (like the JVC CarPlay one for $400, or the Pioneer ones).
Good choice VivG... the Sony unit has a nice matte black design with a *real* volume ****. yay! Sony makes great electronics and so you should be happy with the sound quality.
B3freak, I like your choice the best...looks like it almost could pass fpor factory in my opinion. I have the Bose MOST setup in my 40AE, think I have to go the CAI store for the amp.
Seems to be some great choices out there for all of us.
Chris
Thx Chris. I don't care for Navigation, backup cameras, and all that. I want a radio for what it's primary purpose is... Music. Therefore I went with a nice double DIN unit with a Blaupunkt amp. My car came from the factory with the "HIFI system" which meant I have 10 speaker/6-ch setup which includes the door subs. I could have easily bought a 6 ch frunk amp, but choose to save more money and use the frunk amp to drive the subs and the HU to drive the front and rear speakers.
The Blaupunkt produces clean audio and includes Bluetooth for phone and streaming music. I did the whole system for well under $500.
I used to put nav systems in my cars, but about 3 years ago, realized that my phone had a better nav than my car.
I put a bluetooth adapter in my 996 (
http://www.discountcarstereo.com/BLU-BKR235.html
) and a phone mount. Total cost: $150.00. I get voice navigation through the stereo. I look at the phone in the mount for maps. If you phone allows "OK Google" or "Siri" you even have voice control.
I haven't used android auto or carplay...but I don't see the need.
I am like you B3freak...not to into the electronic thrills! Save that for performance and suspension.
I just found the other thread with the MOST conversion box...ordered that up and now onto the head unit purchase. This forum is even saving me money now! Well, it's being blown in other areas because of this fourum...haha.
Chris
I just prefer the larger screen of the built in system as well as the modern conveniences. As with everything, there are no bad choices, just what's right for each of us. I must say the best sound in this car comes from the rear end!!
Did everyone change out the factory amp when changing out the head unit? I'm about to upgrade my nav non Bose system, and I think it may be a good time to get rid of,the oem amp and get a 5 channel. Anyone else?
I changed out the amp when I did the navigation- also took out the CD changer. The radio- CD changer and amp are all fiber optic so once you change the head out you will need to take everything else out. The only thing I kept was the speakers but those will be changed sometime soon. The system sounds good- not great- so IM sure speakers would finish the job nicely.
bumping this back up. If the car came with a single DIN and had the heater controls up there, how difficult is it to move it down low? Is there a factory plate that works down there? Great setups everyone
With a little bit of google searching u will find its doable in eaither of the lower cubby. The lowerest one is the easiest. The 2nd to low takes a little bit of customization. Im pretty sure there is a relo kit on ebay too. My car.
What is the stock unit in your car and the year? If you have a 2003/2004 with Bose you have the fiber optic wiring which can make it a little tricky and more expensive.
Heater controls are fairly easy to move, a bunch of youtube videos. Wiring already is there as the stock DD units came that way.
I purchased from CAI and had it installed locally, pricey but glad I did it.
