Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anything done like this? I figure it would be a much better fit than a LS swap...

POST 2Original post

There is a couple of Boxsters out there with STI motors built by Precision Chassis Works in Arizona. They even have ECU integration.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't think they exist anymore.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't see anything on their site for subaru conversions. I'm looking for a kit like renegade has for the LS

POST 7Original post

Not sure that the LS is a bad fit when you compare the gains to the trade offs to the m96 or the Subaru . The Ls is considerably lighter (than the M96 ) and the center of mass is close to the M96 .From a reliability standpoint the LS has fewer moving parts and is remarkably well engineered .From a power standpoint there is absolutely no compassion -Pick your number ............. Tradeoffs - If you retain the same transmission locating point -the trunk latch , spoiler mechanism and engine fan have to go .There is some minor sheet metal tuning forward of the bumper . If someone were looking for a reliable-quick street/track car - this is a pretty good combination .Especially if you start with a 7,000 roller .

I have to say, I view you as my hero for building your own M96 4.0L. To hear that you are now looking for an engine swap makes me think two diametrically opposed things: 1. The 4.0L build isn't worth it. 2. When will yours be for sale?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm actually looking for a dedicated track car. The 4.0 is too fragile to track. 4.0 has always been for sale. 30k USD, come and get it. I love the handling in this car, for the money, not much can touch it I'm paranoid as hell tracking it though. Not interested in a LS swap. I'm a subaru guy all day long and very familiar with their motors.

POST 10Original post

I don't believe there is a kit out there for subaru engines. If you just want a flat 6 with 250hp, I think you can get a transmission adapter made pretty easily. See https://www.kennedyeng.com/ and engine mounts wouldn't be a big deal one way or another. Subaru ECUs are open source so, wiring that wouldn't be too bad, but definitely a custom harness. If you want a reliable flat 6 with less hp, I think you could do it easy enough. Maybe even under $5k. If you want a turbo flat 4 with 300-400hp, I'm not sure it makes sense versus an LS swap. You would have all the work and cost mentioned above, but also probably want a forged and built motor, and that could easily be $5-10k maybe even $15k right there. You would need a good turbo and intercooler, that's thousands more. The worst part is the intercoooler and exhaust tubing. All of that would need to be custom and would be hard to do correctly by yourself. I have no clue how many thousands a shop would want for that project. All I see is more money and more work for less hp. Better off getting a $5-$10k boxster or boxseter s and using that as a track car as long as you can. At least then you could get a used replacement engine for more like $2-$3k. I really thought about subaru engines before I did my LS swap. It would have been awesome to keep a flat motor in there. The tradeoff between cost and power killed it for me. It would be a fun project to do. I would build a Factory Five 818, or swap a subaru motor into a 914 if I had my heart set on a subaru powered track car.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can weld and do my own piping, exhaust work. I made my 2.0 Ford Focus Zetec turbo kit with a friend in his garage. That's not a big deal at all for me. I'd be happy with a 300 awhp setup. My WRX handled that and more without much issues. No forged parts needed. That was with a forced performance HTA68 turbo, methanol injection & a STI TMIC

POST 12Original post

It sounds like you'd be more than capable to do the project then. PM me if want any help designing engine mounts or other brackets. Those things I'm great at, while my welding is sub-par. I may be able to help with wiring too, since I figured out quite a bit about how the 996 wiring works during my swap. I made a custom wiring harness from 2 LS engine ones that didn't work like I wanted and wired them to the Porsche with one connector. I wanted to be able to drop the engine without removing sensors or wiring. I think it would be a really cool project and I'd be happy to help. I just wanted to point out the reasons I chose not to do it and why I think most people prefer the LS.

POST 13Original post

I have a 914 with a 3.3 SVX engine in it. It is a little heavy for the car but it is quick. I had a suby 2.0 turbo in there at one point but the driveability wasn't that great. The six is better balanced for the car. I am rebuilding the engine in my 996.2 and the cost of parts is pushing me in the LS direction. Rebuilding an LS would be peanuts compared to the m96.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was ~$8000 for the full kit from renegade. I would spend another 4 or $5000 for a LS motor and it's supporting mods. And of course you need to add funding for the unknowns. For a few thousand more I got to keep the repair simple and dropped a 4.0 flat 6 back in. No hacking of metal or ECU'S necessary

POST 15Original post

Why is it you think its too fragile for the track? That's all I do with mine. 2k miles of smiles so far many of them at 150+ MPH on the straight at BIR.

POST 16Original post

This type of swap is very interesting, even if the scooby motors aren't 'bulletproof' they are very available with lots of options on aftermarket fixes and upgrades. Parts are probably much cheaper than porsche tax. Size should make fitting in a 996 less of a headache than the stock motor. I would think a small charge cooler cooled by a 3rd radiator in the front bumper would make packaging easier. EDIT: if you need a few drawings done for perhaps block to tranny adapter, I have solidworks and I don't mind chipping in an hour here or there to help out. PM if you want some help. I have done this before with a electric motor to VW transmission adapter plate.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14588440

Cool, thanks. Keeping my eyes open for a boxster or 996 roller for cheap.

POST 20Original post

You can build a very powerful LS engine for way less than 4 or 5k depending on what you start with especially if you start with a 5.3. Plenty of magazine and internet articles on this. It's not the cost of the LS platform but the cost of good integration that's expensive. If I keep my n/a 944 it's probably going to end up LS powered. I think this would be a lot safer than tracking my 996. The cost of the swap is all in the integration and the hardest portion of the labor. Motor mounts, clutch parts etc. are all figured out and ready for purchase.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't want to do a LS though, figured that was pretty clear.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 14592592

maybe but you mentioned you'd need 4 to 5 for an LS engine, plus swap kit. I'm considering a 5.3 for my 944. Swap kit. $500 for 5.3 and $800 for all new alt, p/s, and ac plus brackets that fits 944 chassis, and $1500 for intake manifold, ecu, tuner, throttle body and injectors. That's less than 3k leaving a lot to spend elsewhere, probably on a cam to wake up the truck motor. Pretty easy 325-350 at the wheels. Even more with head work. I will probably get stupid and sell the 944 though and buy a 951 because..... I'm also considering a 3rd gen RX7 too. For sanity I probably should go the LS powered 944 for a driver / track toy.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cool. You should start a thread or something.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 14594468

I will start a thread if I start ordering swap parts. The shop in TX that makes kits is nearby. I should probably visit there first. By napkin math the all in driving total cost is in the 10k range including needed brake upgrades etc. I'm trying to decide if 10k plus lots of labor plus my 944 beats owning a 951 or other car. 10k plus my 944 buys a clean 951. For track survivability, it's probably quite logical to go LS 944. One of the major hurdles is finding a late 951 oil cooled trans with a LSD for a good price. That's an expensive hurdle for something's that will probably need a rebuild.

aren't you the guy that wigged out over hoovie putting an ls1 in his 996? but you want to put one in a 944? Isn't that hypocritical?

Thats your opinion. I did voice displeasure with the disgusting forum Hoovie lovefest. And as I pointed out Hoovie didn't do it. He paid someone else to do it. I have no problem with enthusiasts doing what they like with their cars, but Hoovie is click bait. Folks looking up to him as any sort of car guy may as well look up to Harvey Weinstein for their moral compass. That was and always was and has been my issue with Toolvie. He's a tool masquerading as real car guy. What I don't get is willful destruction of good cars for lulz which he does as nauseum. But your point of view is your reality.

POST 29Original post

I thought this was a thread about subaru engine swaps? AWDGuy - did you find the build threads for the boxster EJ swaps? I looked into this a little while back when I was bored. I think photobucket has screwed us yet again: http://www.build-threads.com/build-t...rsche-boxster/ https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2047734 He ended up putting an Audi V8 in there for a more flat torque curve that was better for his race class: You Tube The subaru engine seems like it'd be a good way to go. It would keep the weight low, probably move the CG forward, and shouldn't require cutting the body. You can set them up to produce power just about any way you'd like it. If someone were to design the swap components to make it a bolt on job with minimal fab and wiring it would be a good alternative to the LS swap. But if I had to take it all on myself I'd rather go for an 818C.
