I just changed my oil, and I figured I would go out on the interstate and pull 85mph up a long highway.

Be sure the A/C is off because when the A/C is on the radiator fans run all the time and this works to keep coolant (and oil) temperature down.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, This is probably a weird question. I may have a lifter issue and was looking to get my car a little hotter than usual. I've always looked at my Durametric values hoping my temps would stay down as I do my typical street driving. In this case, I was hoping to heat my oil to about 220 F or 105 C. I just changed my oil, and I figured I would go out on the interstate and pull 85mph up a long highway. Maybe slow down and speed back up a few times 50-80 mph. I guess not much more you can do while being safe. I was never able to get my oil temp above 98.3 C. Any ideas on how one can get oil temps higher without abusing the car or taking it to the track? thanks

POST 4Original post

Slow speed high RPM. Airflow at highway speed will keep the motor cool. Stop and go traffic low gear should do the trick.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Makes sense. My coolant temp was 87 while my oil was it's highest at 98.

Drive the car in town, with lots of stop and go driving. Be sure the A/C is off because when the A/C is on the radiator fans run all the time and this works to keep coolant (and oil) temperature down. With teh A/C off when the radiator fans come on you know the coolant is probably at 212F. The oil has to be that hot and is probably hotter since the oil is in closer contact with the hotter parts of the engine. Drive the car in higher ambient temperatures. Drove my Boxster in 116F temperature and the coolant was 226F. I'm sure the oil was at least that hot and probably hotter.
