With that being said, I replaced my perfectly fine AOS with the UAOS around 90k miles.

The one thing I do have documentation of is the coolant overflow bottle being replaced a year or two ago.

If anyone has a ballpark sanity check number on what the current going rate to have the LN solution or their bearing retrofit I would appreciate it.

The selling points of the UAOS for a daily driver are that you can quickly replace the diaphragm, should it ever tear.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After going through all the documentation and looking over my 02 996 Cab here is what Im thinking. It has a little shy of 40k miles and no documentation of the IMS or clutch being done. Looking at the engine / SN I dont see any indication that its a replacement. The one thing I do have documentation of is the coolant overflow bottle being replaced a year or two ago. Tires are new and everything seems to be working.
Based on that first priority is the IMS bearing and while thats being done the clutch and RMS. My local independent shop is getting me a quote. If anyone has a ballpark sanity check number on what the current going rate to have the LN solution or their bearing retrofit I would appreciate it. Im also getting a quote for the AOS.
Second priority is the water pump it seems like those are more common to fail around the 60-90k mile point but figured I might as well reset it now. Planning to do that myself, already ordered the kit from LN and putting in a lower temp thermostat.
Apart from that what am I missing? The bore scoring thing is concerning from the horror stories on the internet but frankly I would just sell the it and either buy another air cooled 911 or upgrade to Turbo rather than sink 20-30k into the car.
If youre going to have other people work on your car, then your 20k-30k limit will be easily met.
Since youre concerned about bore scoring and the ensuing cost of repairs, I think you should prioritize a borescope inspection. At least youll have an idea whether youre comfortable to proceed with its current state.
I just did all the common-wisdom preventive measures on a 996. Cost me 17k to do the following at one of the premier Porsche independents (so not the cheapest). Bore scope via sump was the first step to determine whether to proceed with the rest.
engine out
IMS retrofit (not solution)
RMS
new clutch and dual mass flywheel
new coil packs
new injectors
UAOS with track drain
new water pump and LN low temp thermostat
transmission fluid (Mobil Delvac)
power steering fluid
MAF sensor
radiators cleaned
roof drains cleaned
DI40 oil
Hope to enjoy for years to come and now doing track focused upgrades (new shocks, DI50 oil and a UIDS).
This is more of a one time deal I dont really have time at the moment to do it myself at the moment, doing some work on my 911SC. Basically want to be able to drive the 996 for a couple years with the basics sorted out.
thanks, appreciate the data point.
My car is a cabriolet and Im really just wanting a reasonably reliable daily driver so performance mods arent a huge concern.
You could likely get away with not doing the UAOS and save a bunch of money. UAOS was the prime reason the engine had to come out. Everything else can be done with the engine in the car.
I would also add the LN engineering spin on oil filter adapter. But this is an easy DIY job.
I have been reading up on all this stuff and UAOS seems unnecessary for my purposes.
The spin on oil filter thing is absolutely something I will be adding I have the canister oil filters on a few other vehicles and really dont care for them. In particular the Toyota 4 Runner is always a complicated mess. At least the Porsche can be removed with a simple filter clamp and doesnt make a mess. The biggest reason I didnt order one from the start is that I wanted to keep a very close eye on anything showing up in the filter until I have a chance to get the IMS fixed and the canister is way easier than trying to cut open a filter.
The selling points of the UAOS for a daily driver are that you can quickly replace the diaphragm, should it ever tear. This diaphragm is very inexpensive, found somewhat commonly, and is thicker than the one in the OE AOS (reducing the frequency of it developing a tear).
It also eliminates a point of possible coolant-oil intermix by deleting the coolant line through the plastic OE AOS.
With that being said, I replaced my perfectly fine AOS with the UAOS around 90k miles. Although I cant confirm, I suspect that the AOS was original and had 90k miles on it too. I believe that original AOS would still be working to this day (15k miles later), had I not removed it, but Im much happier with the UAOS for the peace of mind it provides.
