Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

When I removed the trans to replace IMS/RMS I saw that there was similar oil residue around the AOS so I replaced it too.
Leading evidence: 'Replace air oil separator' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'air oil separator' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check now, i would appreciate them' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The vent tube can be replaced with engine in car, however, it is a major PITA.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My new (to me) 2004 C2 had oil residue on the PS of the engine but no leak to the ground. The service records showed replacement of the oil sender a while back so I figured the residue was left over from a leak at that point. I decided to clean it up and found that there is still some leakage somewhere as there are wet/shiny places from above the oil sender.
My plan now is to clean this thoroughly prior to my 650 mile trip to FL in Jan. and then see what it looks like when I get there. However, if you have ideas about what I could check now, I would appreciate them.
Replace oil sender unit. At least make sure it is snugged up tight. Also, above this area is the oil cooler that has two o-rings seals that have been known to leak. However, you would have to drop the engine to replace those.
See pictures 10, 11, 12 to see what is above this area. I know it is from a tech article on the Boxster but it is helpful to see what is up there.

The center injector electrical connector on the PS (don't know cylinder numbering on this engine but maybe #2?) is very oily as is the ribbed tube above it. What is this ribbed tube - maybe the vent tube to the AOS? I am suspicious it has a leak in it in that area because the bottom side of this ribbed tube and everything below it has some oil on it.
The Pelican link is helpful in showing what is around that center injector, but that oil tube appears to seal at each end and the leak definitely seems to be more in the middle of that cylinder bank. Wondering if the vent tube can be replaced with engine in car?
BTW, the oil sender is definitely dry.

For your 2004, yes, that is the crankcase breather hose that goes to the AOS. The vent tube can be replaced with engine in car, however, it is a major PITA. Pelican Tech Article on AOS - See figure 18

Well, I have cleaned everything as well as I can by hand without resorting to a pressure washer and I really don't see the source of the oil. The front of the PS cylinder head and down onto the rear sway bar and bellhousing area are also covered with a nice layer of oil & dirt. Once cleaned, the aluminum underneath looks almost new rather than the normal oxidation, so I'm thinking whatever it is has been seeping for a really long time. Tempted to try to affix a diaper to that vent tube to see if it gets oily and the rest of the engine remains clean.
I can see replacing that vent tube would be a near impossibility without removing all of the stuff you need to remove to do an AOS replacement with the engine in the car. Lots of tedious work!
I am wrapping this up for the benefit of others with a similar issue. Bottom line is I think it was the AOS. I did replace the o-ring where the vent tube on the PS enters the crankcase. When I removed the trans to replace IMS/RMS I saw that there was similar oil residue around the AOS so I replaced it too. After 1000 miles of sporty driving, I no longer see any oil residue in the area of the PS vent hose and cylinder head where it previously appeared.
I think the AOS was working but was "weak" if that is possible?
