We tested a Gundo and a Fister back to back with the same mufflers on the same car - night and day!
Leading evidence: 'Test gundo and a fister back' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Set cheap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I mentioned I had a set for cheap that were just lying in my garage.

It was easy to use the soot marks to spot all of the leaks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My left OEM muffler was shot and had developed bad internal rattles and it was almost embarrising to drive around off the line up to 3,000 RPMS when the rattle would go away.
So, I purchased a used set of Fisters and when I went to pick the car up I could not tell any difference in sound besides start up. Probably due to the rattle being gone. Either way I put about 5 miles on my car and was quite disappointed with the lack of noise. I 100% can not tell a difference from before to now inside the car. Maybe it sounds different outside the car, but inside the car it doesn't sound any louder. Anyone else experience this?
My intake is still the loudest noise my car makes. Time for an X pipe and high flow cats I suppose.
Sorry to hear this as I really enjoyed them. The only reason I went all out to finish the complete exhaust was the old modding itch.
The sound difference between Fisters and a complete system is honestly not that different. You might be surprised by the amount of noise they're actually making outside of the car.
There are track videos on my page with sounds from both and even now the intake is still much more audible in the car. With both systems however the exhaust is much, much louder outside the car especially above 3,000.
I'm not putting any blam on Vandersmith what so ever. They were his cans that I purchased and he was a great seller to deal with.
I also may note that due to my left muffler having internals loose my Oem exhaust may have been making more noise than it should have
FWIW, I would call Fister's a great DD exhaust. They're relatively quiet when cruising and only makes the kind of noise you want when you really rev it or get on it. Best of both worlds IMO.
Some guys expect it to be race car loud all the time including idle and speeding up to 30mph on a neighborhood street and with Fister's that's simply not the case.
Also, the noise level will be different depending on the size of the crossover hole and pipe installed.
What size pipe do you have?
Here is what mine sounds like with the Fister exhaust. There is no mistaking it for stock. At AX, when most of the modern Pcars go by all you hear is wind noise!

I agree on it being a great DD exhaust. I had a C6 vette before the vacuum actuated butterflies and I purchased about 4 different exhausts for it. They all sounded great at idle and on it but cruising was drone and reverb city! My 996 with the fister mod sounds muscular at idle and when ripping but on the highway is almost exhaust silent! I love it.
Vandersmith is legit and has detailed every purchase in his mod thread and backed it up with pictures and video.
OP, sounds like to me you are driving with your windows up or you foot not buried in the throttle. For either one, shame on you!
This is what my car sounded like with them on at the track (and a K&N intake at the time) from a few different camera angles:

These are the exact mufflers I sent from my build thread, I'll admit I am a little confused about the differences between Fister/Gundo. Seems the terms get used interchangeably.
One installs small pipe between the inlet and outlet so that some exhaust bypasses. This is proper Fister and a hack these guys pioneered.
The latter, or Gundo, opens the normally closed second outlet on the top port of the stock mufflers thats opened with a valve on the models with PSE.
I went with the Gundo and incorrectly termed it as Fister (my bad) but I was happy with it, the car sounded great.
That being said, even with current my full exhaust system (which is loud at WOT) I still can't really hear the exhaust in the car over the intake unless I'm near the track wall or revving in the pits to warm the engine up.
It was a pretty simple conversation. He mentioned he was looking for something to make the exhaust louder. I mentioned I had a set for cheap that were just lying in my garage.
I could have clarified further I suppose but again they sounded great on mine and the price was cheaper than having them done or sent in. Didn't even think about it.
This clears it up. The Fisters are definitely more noticeable(louder) than the Gundo's so the OP was probably underwhelmed by it thinking he had Fister modded cans.
Before Fisters, my cab sounded like a Honda civic. Afterwards, it has the true Porsche sound that I expected when I purchased a Porsche. I've had mine for 5 years and love the sound.
Yeah, you have the old hack, the original "Gundo." I believe Fister also used to offer this mod, where you tap into the knock-out on the muffler instead of the "current" Fister where you are connecting the inlet and outlet pipes together, but the Gundo hack was a very subtle difference compared to the Fister.
There are people who have "Fistered their Gundos" - which sounds a little obscene - but the situation is easy to remedy with $100 or so and/or a case of decent beer to your friendly neighborhood muffler/race shop.
The guy who welded up an x-pipe for my Corvette (so I could junk the resonator) was a complete hack - it was terrible. I ran it that way for about a month and then pulled it back off to fix it myself. It was easy to use the soot marks to spot all of the leaks.
I am a **** welder, but I don't claim to do it for a living...
The title of this thread should be changed to avoid confusing people who are considering having Fister do the work. Darin did mine about 5 years ago and I still love the sound.
We tested a Gundo and a Fister back to back with the same mufflers on the same car - night and day!
Gundo sounded pretty stock - Fister sounded really good!
I do not have "Fister"....
What I have are "Pablo's" that's the name of the guy that did the work for me on the original mufflers.....for a FRACTION of the Fister cost....and sound the same........at a local muffler shop.....
Consider yourself lucky...except for any money your are out. I got tired of loud mufflers back in 1960. That's when I learned the difference between the sound of the engine and the sound of the exhaust. These days when someone goes by making obscene noise, I throw rocks at the car. Learn to listen to your engine and you won't have to turn up the volume.
Gundo = Hack ... Fister = Crack (as in: once you hear it you're hooked) ! Fister your Gundo = That's just perverse, don't go there...you'll be sorry
** Johnny I - We're not talking Cherry Bombs or Thrush here ok? No fiberglass, just fine German steel !!!
BTW - I've got neither... Fabspeed Maxflows here...They're real, and they're fabulous!!!
Vandersmith is a well respected guy... I honestly think my shot OEM mufflers were just as loud as fisters, but with a little more rasp when I was WOT...
Either way. The fisters are staying on my car as I no longer have rasp and I just have a crisp sound when blipping the throttle on downshifts and WOT. I still have yet to have someone drive my car and listen to it from the outside
I understand that Buicks have an especially soothing exhaust note...maybe you should find yourself a nice Regal or LaCrosse...you'd probably ****** up all kinds of tail in that apartment complex of yours.
