Suggestion

I've had no complaints running the PS4S in near freezing temperatures on dry roads, however given how close the A/S 3+ tires are to the best summer tire I still think that is a great option.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in Chicago and my 996 is a weekend/fun car. During the frozen and sloppy winter months, it sits in the garage. So I was happy to to have summer tires for maximum fun on sunny days. However, this year the weather has been dry and ~40 degrees throughout much of Oct-Dec. Too cold for summer tires, but definitely some days I would have liked to drive my Porsche. I was planning on new tires next year, and was thinking of getting all-seasons to extend my short driving season by another month or two. How much driving magic am I giving up with all-seasons vs summer tires? Which is the best all season set up for a car that will never see snow?

POST 3Original post

I drive my Michelin PS 4S in the 40s. Of course theres only a handful of days that get that cold down here. I have a second set of wheels that I might put AS tires on.

POST 4Original post

General G-Max was highly rated for traction and quiet at tirerack.com, and if remembering correctly operating costs were 1/4 compared to N spec tires. Cost half and Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) twice as high.

That's what I have. Calling them three season tires is accurate.

POST 7Original post

+1 ON the Conti DWS,, I've run them on multiple cars,, only thing that sticks better in the cold is a full studless ice tire. But they drive nice on the warm days and they rock in the wet.. Not as good a Michelin N spec or PS sport in the dry but very adequate for the year round car..

POST 8Original post

Also run a full set of the dws06's year round on my C2. Live just north of you near Milwaukee.

POST 9Original post

I was very pleased with the service I got from a set of Yokohama Advan Sport A/S tires. Used sizes; 235/40R18 & 285/35R18. Good grip, decent ride outstanding life (30,000+ on the rears!)

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I run the Extreme Contact DWS 06 on my BMW, but I haven't been through a full winter with them yet. I've been really happy with them this fall, but I drive that car differently (E90 335xi sedan, my family hauler). I've seen some articles about how the new 2020 Corvette is shipping with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires and is still going to pull 1g on the skidpad. I don't think those are available to the general public yet, but they look attractive https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a2...-season-tires/

Currently have 235/40/18s and they rub a little at full lock at front of fender liner. Don't want to go any smaller tire for this minor issue, so a future project will try to create a 3" wide by 4" high and maybe 1/4" deep indentation in plastic fender liner and metal beneath. I'd like to add a 5 mm wheel spacer but think that would make it worse. Never saw a post where anyone else mentions rubbing inside fender liner and what they did to resolve, maybe most owners accept wimpy looking stock size 225/40/18. In rear currently have 295/30/18 with no rubbing, but again tire too small diameter looks weak. Was planning on trying 285/35/18s, maybe with wheel spacers, expect that will give the best looking tires we can get on a 996. We don't do any competition so max performance not an issue.

POST 12Original post

285/35/18's Rear, 235/40/18's Front. Conti DWS06's. 12m spacers on Narrow Body Twists Rear (wide body wont work), 5m Spacers on front (all front twists were the same). PSS9's dropped to GT3 height (had GT3 coils prior and liked the look) and corner balanced. No Rubbing of any kind.

Magnificent car and love that color. Is it a widebody? I would expect that big 285/35/18 rear tire with 12 mm spacer to stick out nicely, but doesn't seem to. Thanks for info on tire sizes and yours not rubbing, don't know what's the relevant difference between our vehicles. Never hear anything but with flashlight can see rub pattern at front middle of liners, happens at full lock. Wheels are Sport Classic II's which I believe are stock as is suspension, and fronts have "52" near valve stem that should represent backspacing. Seems like spacers will push wheel out and tire further into liner but maybe not, will simulate with washers next time wheel is off.

It is a very nice touring tire.

POST 16Original post

Have you looked at the Michelin Pilot A/S 3+? They have almost the same performance as the Pilot sport 4S but they can handle the cold. They are an all-season tire but are on the summer-tire end of the spectrum. I almost bought them instead of the PS4S for my car even though I don't drive it in the winter. Also I recently watched a detailed tire test that was comparing cold weather performance of summer, all-season, and snow tires. The big takeway for me was that traction with summer tires in cold (~freezing) temperatures is still comparable to all-seasons as long as it is dry. The traction becomes a problem mostly when it is cold and wet. And obviously when there is snow. I've had no complaints running the PS4S in near freezing temperatures on dry roads, however given how close the A/S 3+ tires are to the best summer tire I still think that is a great option.

I went with PZero AS+ for my 2 season tires (spring and fall). They are shockingly good street tires. If they were made in 295/30R18 I would run them all year long. The big problem with "summer tires" is cracking if used at low temps.

POST 18Original post

Strathconaman- I'm looking to put all seasons on my C4S for use on dry winter days. Do you still run the stock wheels? Would I be better off getting new wheels all around for sizing purposes and to keep my stock rims clean?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17008814

I have a set of Sport Edition Cup 4 (I think this is an in house brand at Tire Rack). Whatever wheels you get, match the width to the tread width that Tire Rack publishes. NOT the listed tire width. IE, not 265 but the measurement in inches that tire rack publishes. The reason I would recommend this is the 265 PZero AS+ is about an inch narrower than the 265 Pilot Sport All Season 4. The former fits best on a 9 inch rim, and the latter, a 10. I originally had the PZero AS+ on a 10 and it looked stretched. Moved it to a 9 inch rim and it was much better.

POST 20Original post

Thanks strathconaman- I'm going to order the same setup you have from Tire Rack. Thanks a bunch for the advice.

POST 21Original post

Sounds like Michelin AS 4 would be a perfect choice and would extend your driving window.

POST 22Original post

Try Bridgestone. I was very satisfied with grip and stopping in colder weather.
