Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It may have been an auto system or at least had a variable displacement compressor as I don't recall the A/C affecting the car/engine in any way when I used the A/C.
Leading evidence: 'Use a/c' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust fan rate' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just hit the mode button with the upward arrow and manually adjust the fan rate to your liking.

I just need to get past my inhibitions of running the AC all the time.

In fact, I can only run the defroster for two minutes

Then with either of my cars just pushing the "auto" button has the fan speed reduced, the temperature setting back to "72F" (where I generally leave it in the dead of winter or in the triple digit heat of summer), and the vents under "auto" control with a nice balance of air from the vents.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is my first winter with my P car and as such, it is also the wettest year in California in ten years. The heater and defroster are very effective at their respective jobs. In fact, I can only run the defroster for two minutes
or so before I cook myself out of the car!
When I hit the defrost button it seems to be programmed to switch the fan to high, turn on A/C and turn heat to eleven. Can the heat be adjusted in defrost mode?
Yes, what you’re experiencing is German philosophy at work, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc all operate like this. German car engineering roughly translates to bermensch, which roughly translated is Nietzsche’s concept of the superman. Which roughly translates to “we’re super-engineers and you’re not” “therefore you’ll do things our way”.
It’s not a bad design, and other non-German cars use it as well. It gives an intense blast of warm air mixed with dehumidified air that is best at demisting the inside of the windshield. After the windshield is clear just hit the auto button. More German logic will take over, directing air to whatever area the bermensch inside your car’s brain thinks it needs to go.
If you have two wet dogs in the car panting like mad and you still need more defrost, but at a lesser rate than the Uber-defrost. Just hit the mode button with the upward arrow and manually adjust the fan rate to your liking.
While the defrost mode might appear to be overkill in Woodland CA I can assure you that in other parts of the country even with the fan on high, the A/C on, and the heat on high, the ice takes a while to melt.
Heck, even in Livermore, CA at least earlier this winter the frost was pretty thick on the windshield -- the car sat outside overnight -- and even with the defroster on full blast it took some time for the ice to melt. (I don't own an ice scraper.)
Also, I can be driving along and the glass starts to fog up. Instead of playing around with the controls I just push the defrost button and the fog is gone in short order. When the glass starts to fog and you want it clear you'll appreciate the output of the system in defrost mode.
Then with either of my cars just pushing the "auto" button has the fan speed reduced, the temperature setting back to "72F" (where I generally leave it in the dead of winter or in the triple digit heat of summer), and the vents under "auto" control with a nice balance of air from the vents.
i agree, the HVAC is very effective. I just discovered "auto" tonight. It is quite effective. I just need to get past my inhibitions of running the AC all the time.
I'm from the snow belt originally. When I moved back to the mid-west after spending decades in CA with of course -- at least where I lived -- no snow I relearned. I did use a credit card once but it snapped in half. If I were in the snow often I'd have an ice scraper in the car. But for the few times a year my parked outside Boxster accumulates some frost/ice after cold night the car's defroster works just fine.
I tried this the other day and if my A/C is on auto mode -- with the compressor on or off -- and I press the defrost button while the fan speed increases and the windshield vent gets most of the air blast, the temperature remains unchanged.
In order to raise the temperature I have to manually press the temperature control button.
For years I avoided A/C. Then back in '89 when I bought my first new car I got A/C. While it was nice I still didn't like the way the A/C affected the car/engine with the on again/off again load from the compressor being engaged/disengaged.
Since them all my cars have had A/C as a necessary evil but the Boxster and its auto climate system really made me a convert. I don't recall what my VW Golf A/C system was. It may have been an auto system or at least had a variable displacement compressor as I don't recall the A/C affecting the car/engine in any way when I used the A/C. And I can't recall what my 2006 GTO had in the way of A/C. But when I bought the (new) 2008 Cayman S I made sure it had auto climate control -- with the variable displacement compressor -- and ditto when I bought the used 2003 Turbo.
I'm not familiar with variable displacement compressors (one of the many things I'm unfamiliar with
) - I always thought the temp in Auto mode was controlled by mixing in warm air from the heater - maybe just on US (non-Porsche cars)?
