For my own cars, which were all bought used, I've just been using various ceramic spray or carwash products to keep water beading up when I wash them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Instead of cluttering up Prices Keep Drifting Up, let's start our own OT thread.
Talk about boomers, corvettes, debate bore scoring or lightning strikes, whatever.
I'll start: boomers drive Corvettes with engines that don't get bore scoring and remain unaffected by lightning because the entire car is made of fiberglass.
Mods:.I am doing this to mitigate the cluster f in other threads, yes there's an off topic forum but most don't venture there and prefer the company of other 996 owners here in this subforum.
Ok, here we go - how to keep car up securely on a scissor lift that doesn't have physical locks for a longer period of time - talking about days or so at max so not about storing permanently like for the winter etc. The lift is from a reputable manufacturer so I'm not thinking that it would come down but so that it could make less strain on the hydraulic lock for example - thinking about longevity of that lift etc.
My boomer buddy has a '95? corvette ..., wears the New Balance and everything, kills me every time. Great dude.
Wouldn't leave a car in the air without physical locks if not working on it. Not sure about longevity or strain, but as a personal measure. Risk / reward.
They make a hydraulic check valve for cylinders that prevent movement if there is no pressure. If there r no mechnical locks one of these should be fitted to the cylinder and then its safe. Its how wheel lift assembly on tow trucks work.
Quickjack has locks. Lift the car and then lower it to the stops. You can even disconnect the hoses at that point. Little bit of a pita to set up but awesome once its in place.
Heh, that's actually why I'm asking - I have a Quickjack which I've been using now like a year or so. That locking mechanism is excellent because you can keep car there weeks if needed. Decided to get a Nussbaum Sprinter 7 (3000 in EU) because of a higher reach and for ease of use. Just wondering how to replicate that "feature"

. If this isn't a case for a permaban, I don't know what is.
Yes, it's very funny when people who have worked hard for 40 or 50 years to provide everything for their family finally have the resources and time to reward themselves with a car of their dreams. Hysterical. If you're lucky enough, you'll be old one day too.
How mad do you think it would make people if I dropped the engine on my 6-3 just to add in the firewall noise deadening material from the Turbo cars.
.. and added in all the missing sound deadening material in the interior.
.. and removed the wing and replaced it with just a ducktail lid
Basically a 996 GT3 touring :v
i have all the c2 sound dedening in my gt3ish, it helps. I dont think the firewall piece is different, u would need the c4 pad. As for the wing... i need more aero so im probably going rsr next year, would think a duck bill is the wrong choice..... of course all if this is kinda on topic, so......
I like franks and beans, anyone else?
Two years ago I put this in my garage to do a bunch of work
new tires, chain, rebuild front forks
A month after I had all the parts, I bought the 996 and it just sat in pieces on stands.
This week I finally put it back together and back on two wheels.
Only to find out the gas tank seal leaks. Had to order one from Suzuki for $50
Maybe next year I'll finally ride it
I was a chief instructor, taught and licensed new and experienced riders for over 30 years, then retired during COVID. I had just bought the cab and expected to spend my weekends at club events...most of which were cancelled.
Sometimes now I just put the roof down and drive around with my helmet on...
The Porsche is plenty enough fun to help fill that void, but nothing beats zipping through gears on a bike. Will have to wear mine when handing out Halloween candy this year.
We deploy in 4 man teams and this particular deployment we did a lot of PR stuff and less operations, so we had a lot of free time. One of my guys is a Vette guy and doesnt shut up about them, so much so that he tried convincing me to sell my 996 to buy one. Im incredibly happy that Ill never have to work with him again asked him to leave me alone.
They are cool cars, but don't capture my attention as much as the 996 or 911 in general. Driven a few mid/late 2000s on the the track. A lot of torque, big, wide cars. Neutral feeling cars without a lot of feel in the steering, seat or throttle, unlike our 996. In essence, didn't feel the track. Certainly not as nimble as our cars. But incredible power on the straights.
I would like to drive the new one on the track to see if they finally nailed it.

The motor i wanted to put in the gt3ish, but with its release delays i couldnt wait around for it.
This is very, very, very cool -- great to see exactly what is happening. They use a 1975 Honda XR-75 engine for the video. Coincidentally, my brother bought a brand new XR-75 in 1975, I still remember that it was $407.06 back then.
Help ..... my 911 is a target! So sick of other vehicles trying to cut me off or tailgating. And I think I drive quite courteously. Seems like too often it is some macho man in a lifted peekup. This morning I'm in line to turn onto an on-ramp, and I slam on the brakes because some peekup suddenly jumps in front of me. Then it's a 2 lane on ramp that merges into one lane to join the freeway, and out of nowhere on my right some other peekup suddenly cuts me off after the lanes have merged. Oh great move, you just gained 1 second on me. Then while on the freeway I turn on my left blinker to pass him and start moving over, and he suddenly cuts in front of me to block me. Ouch, what a world, what world. Some of this behavior happens all the time. Think I need some missile launchers under the headlights.
Are people still jealous or hateful of Porsche drivers? I thought that meme died off in the '90s. Most peekups I see cost more than my car, so what is the big deal.
People are just stupid. Sometimes I think they just want to solicit a response, which is funny when you drive normal and they just look like more of an *******.
I always get the same demographics trying to race me from a stop light or on the highway.
douche bags in diesel trucksHerbs in Hondas
bozos in BMWs
morons in Mercedes
I just drive normally and they look even dumber
Via Rancho on to the 15?
I'm lucky that my car came from the factory with the missile option. Maybe it can be retrofitted. I think it was option code 007.
My father inlaw called yesterday from Foxboro and he's out till Friday sometime. He finally decided it was time to get a whole house generator, getting tough to lug out the portable at his age. The generator I installed at housing in Bourne on the Cape is still running as far as I know. I'll have to log in and see. Windy further north but not as bad.
It's in the back seat.
I buy these OEM Navi units from junkyards and test them in my car and sell them for a few hundred bucks. I'd be removing the bezel every week !
7 years of ownership
It is a fact, people tailgate 911s
Just about a daily occurrence.
I will say, that I do drive slower on the street since doing some HPDEs*
* most of the time
The last two I ordered, one showing April and the other July. I'm buying back the Kohler that's been taking up space in my garage for the last two years from my buddy who hasn't got the time to install it at his place.
Around here I experience the same thing regardless of which toy car I am driving. It's not always trucks. Could be soccer Moms in vans or SUVs. Kids in what they think is a hot car. Seems like everybody wants to race or cut you off. People are just driving like a male body part these days. As above most times, not always, I just drive normal and keep my eyes open...wide.
In my 7 years of Porsche ownership, without a doubt the brand brings out the worst in other drivers especially on the expressway. It's seems like a comic battle of good vs. evil, poor vs. rich, US vs. Germany, or something.
Guess it gives some people a feather in their hats to "beat a Porsche" on their work commute.
I had a guy on a motorcycle pull up in front of me on a road (83 Illinois) and proceeded to wheelie his motorcycle down the street in front of me. Then I changed lanes and he changed lanes and did it all over again. Must have been a full moon out or something.
Ive only been in this car for 6 months but Ive yet to have anything like this happen. I keep expecting something whenever I see an M3 or a Camaro or something but so far I just seem invisible. Which is ok fine with me.
It's definitely not an occurrence every time the car is taken out, it just solicits those types of people every now and then. When driving the truck, I'll pass those same people and they won't even give a second look.
I know that type. Jason and I ran a track day at Thompson in less than perfect conditions. Guy in a black ZL-1 Camaro made it through 2 turns of the first lap before he spun and ended up in the creek backwards.
I've been wondering why we see so many odd behaviors on the road. My theory is that too many drivers are simply unaware of what is going on around them. Today's modern cars are so easy to drive that the car simply lulls people to sleep. Perhaps many drivers now think simply: "as long as I stay in my lane and don't hit the car in front of me I have no other responsibilities ". Which means, "I don't have to put any mental effort into driving, I can space out". So they are not concerned about what is happening around them. They drive short-sighted, simply follow the guy in front of me. They don't observe what is happening 3-5 cars ahead, nor monitor the rear view mirrors. And this is all compounded by a general "self-oriented" mindset so prevalent in our society today: "I got my lane, who cares about the other guy". Just a general disrespect for other people. If you've ever had some exposure to how the First Responders think and do their work: The number 1 priority is "Situational Awareness", and many people don't understand the value of constantly being aware of what is going on around them.
But it is different with you guys here on the forum. Porsche drivers are "into it", we keep an eye out, we understand the risks of driving, try not to step on others. There is an old article in Excellence Magazine where the interviewed the highway patrol. They stated clearly that they don't suspect or target Porsche drivers at all, they figure Porsche owners are knowledgeable about their cars and driving and generally are not the people to worry about on the road.
{My next observation will be: people who hog the left lanes and don't move over it they aren't actively passing someone, and the resulting endless passing / zipping by in the right lane!}
Hah! We had two guys at Blackhawk Farms Raceway one year that bought a Viper that was run in the ALMS series. Thing was powerful, it was loud, it was long, it didn't turn and this is a tight 2 mile track. These guys started in the fastest run group, out accelerated on every straight, tried to stay in front of every Porsche, but couldn't turn the car. And ended up holding every body up. They were black flagged and told to move to a slower group and learn how to drive the car.
Heres hoping that as of January when I can get classic car plates (and flat $500 car value for property tax!) people will have more respect for an old classic.
So I got one sort of off topic. How do you guys keep from constantly wanting to buy and sell cars? I like my cars and am blessed to be a position to own them. Currently, have a R53 Mini, 99 911 and 2021 Tacoma. I like them all but part of me wants to also sell them all for new things, it drives me nuts.
Yeah I know what you mean. I'm fairly satisfied with my current garage (see signature)
When I was in college one year I went through so many vehicles the stage sent me a letter asking if I was a dealer.
It's tough not to scroll Craigslist or Facebook marketplace and want to buy something.
That's why we pick projects to enhance the car over time. Great thing about the 996/911 is they get better with age, and there is always something you can do to make it better, faster and stronger. Plus, once you get it out on the track, you realize how special the 996 actually is.
I'm great at buying but terrible at selling. I currently have five cars (see sig) and a take-home company car. When I lived at the beach this would have been impossible but now that I'm further inland, I've become a hoarder.
I guess I get emotionally attached, maybe because I do 99% of my own work on them. Who knows? When I retire, I just want one practical car and one or two fun cars. We'll see.
Would buy more if had a larger garage. Don't sell because I honestly have a hard time dealing with the general public when it comes to selling things, and sure as hell would never bring it to a stealership.
Garage space is one for me as well. I wouldn't mind taking apart my MINI to work on an engine rebuild to learn some more about that but then my 911 would be outside and who knows how long it would take me to complete that.
Speaking of too many cars I had the Z4MC out this morning. I had forgotten how much of a different experience it provides vs. the targa. It's a whole 'nother bunch of fun.
Here is an interesting interactive map: "
Roadway Report
is an interactive, zoomable map of U.S. road fatalities in the last few decades, with public record data for each incident. You can layer it with motor vehicles, pedestrians and bikes and narrow the frame to certain time periods. The map comes with a warning that the data is geographically incomplete"four unmapped deaths for every death on the map," writes developer
Ben Carneiro.

I'm in the process of replacing our long term GTI, due to inconsiderate fellow commuter, and am thinking about current products to protect the exterior. Dealers sell packages to supposedly add all kinds of protections, but I've always been a bit dubious about them.
What's the current state of the art for exterior protection on a new car? Painted metal, gloss plastics, glass, wheels...
I'm so far behind in understanding this. I'm still using Mequiar's Gold Class shampoo and Griot's Best of Show Carnauba wax. TIA for inputs. I understand there are many competing strategies and products and am not trying to start any arguments. Maybe a limit is that all my applications will be done by hand.
My wife's new Lexus got the full dealer protection treatment. They warranty it so even if she gets a parking lot door ding they'll PDR it. Hard to pass up a deal like that! No PPF though. To be honest I'm not a big fan, after having seen it on a few cars after a couple of years' exposure.
For my own cars, which were all bought used, I've just been using various ceramic spray or carwash products to keep water beading up when I wash them. But then I have never kept a car in concours condition -- not even close.
Been busy planning for my other hobby.....a trip to Moab, UT.
My buddys trailer needed work and basically a race prep on the jeep. U have to check everythng when u travel 10-20 miles outside of cel phone service.
At our 2nd stop Sand Hollow, UT. 7 wheeling days in Moab was a blast.
Moab, Steelbender triail
Moab, Escalator by drone in the Hells Revenge trail
Moab, Kane Creek trail
More Kane Creek
Sand Hollow state campground. Its beautiful here.
Making me jealous of you being out in the desert. Beautiful. Pretty rainy this morning here in Utah so keep an eye out. It can be sunny and still have a flash flood come rolling through.
I was along for the ride, I only remember a few names "Chicken Corners:, "The Gap", "Schafer Trail" - but can't tell you where those are I have a Sage Green Ural, powder-coated, flat color. It matches the sagebrush out here in the west near perfect, like camo.
I got the Siberian GPS from Irbit, Russia. My kind of humor.
YMMV
Makes sence. Those trails r a little farther out if moab. Oit jeeps dont have good steeet manors so we atay closer to town.
A couple from Moab Rim trail
Most of the places we went to were north of Moab, many from Canyonlands NP. Most of the Ural motorcycles were 2WD, a history thing from WW2. These Urals are all metal, nearly zero plastic or other BS. Most of the journeys started from somewhere in Canyonlands or a few miles north of Moab. One trip started with snow, sleet, and hail at the Canyonlands Park entrance. Many had the NP "Lifetime Geezer Card" or whatever it is called, no problem to get into the park. Arches is a different story, sort of Gestapo like, "NAME, BIKE NUMBER, ID, " ETC. The great thing is the :Pompous-Jerks do not understand Russian, especially when telling them to Buzz-Off in a non-politically correct way, and stuff it if you can't handle a Russian license plate. One time in Canyonlands, "trying" to get to "Mineral Bottom" it was so muddy that ALL were having a real hard time. We gave up. There is a white van in the background, up to the frame stuck in mud. Years later I could still chip off that damn mud.
Just stuff in my backyard, so to speak. It is a blast to go down to the mini-mart to get some pivo (beer) in 6" of snow on a Ural. One wife/husb. was so impressed, that She insisted on their new Indian Store to ALSO have these Russian (Now Kazak, due to sanctions, etc) Ural motorcycles. They were so "uninformed or new?" that they called me to help them put together a new Ural from it's shipping crate.
BTW, nice to yak at someone who has experience in Moab area not on the paved roads and so on. It is a different world out there. If you ain't prepared, then be prepared to have serious periods of impeded progress (stuck). Maybe a Dakar 911 could do some of this stuff? Dunno.
Photos B4 Mineral Bottom attempt and the on the ridge. Maybe you were on on the White Rim trail? It doesn't really matter, it is all fabulous.
YMMV
Very nice.... i learned a long time ago that 2 or even 3 wheels were not enough for me
. Im on the east coast but have travled out west about a dozen times to explore and moab is high on the list .
Yea arches np is a big pita. There is a back way into the park through rough terain and its legal as long as u get your permit on-line. We have never made it to canonlands due ro the distance from home base. We kinda stick to the harder rock crawling (even though moab isnt that hard). First time we ran Prichetts canyon it took us 13hrs due to a breakage, next time we did it in 2. U never know oit there.
View from the end of Prichetts 2012
That was the whole idea. These Siberian GPS units are quite rare, limited production and all of that.
Absolutely runs forever, no special adapter needed. No special "mounting bracket". has selenium magnets on bottom, really strong magnets, like in PC-hard-drives.. So strong, I had put a very thin clear plastic on bottom so I could slide the "GPS" off the bike. The only User Advisory Note, aside from learning Russian alphabet (piece of cake) to "read GPS" , is don't get it wet. It isn't waterproof.
YMMV
We dont. They do make some 24v portable stick welders for the overland guys. We just rig the hell out if the jeep to get it home (camp ground). I bring a Miller 211 and a plasma cutter in the trailer for field repairs. Our trip in Oct we needed both for a track bar mount that ripped off. The wheeling on the east coast is actually much more abusive with all the granite. Out west the high traction usually breaks gears and axles.
I have Maps that have that "Back Way" into Arches shown. In general, locals go waaaaay off the beaten path into the baaaaack part of Arches and don't see any Gestapo Park agents. In general, we try to avoid areas with the GPAs. Heck, I go for native cutthroat trout at 9600' and on a Memorial or Labor day weekend, there may.. be 3-4 other camps /tents/trailers in the area. Too tough to get there and we prefer the solitude, so to speak.
YMMV
