Took an old coffee carafe, filled with water from coffee machine, mixed in the dye and when it cooled enough not to melt plastic, put it a spray bottle and sprayed it on.

I think the carpet was used on the doors because doing so creates a smooth, continuous transition.

I had just used the regular RIT but they make special stuff for polyester vs nylon.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think the carpet was used on the doors because doing so creates a smooth, continuous transition. Look at the factory carpet and how it transitions from the footwell to the door to the back of the car, it's a smooth line.
I removed the factory Savannah carpet from my doors and replaced it with black carpet. It's a huge pain in the *** and will take a decent amount of time to clean what is leftover on the door after you pull the carpet off. It's not hard though, just kind of annoying. Just get an edge on the carpet then pull it off (it will take some force). Half the carpet strands will probably be left on the door, but at least pull the nylon netting (or whatever it's called) that holds it all together. Then, I used a set of wide pliers to slowly but surely pull all the leftover bits off. It will probably take an hour or so for each door.
I used this carpet for the doors and my speaker box:

It's a pretty darn good match to the factory black carpet. It's not thick enough to use for something like actual floor carpet or a floor mat or anything, but it's perfect for how I used it to wrap things.
The difference between the speaker box and seat back color is due to fading of the seat back carpet. It's also one of those things where it looks like a perfect match in person, but cameras pick up the colors different.
Was thinking about dying mine. My C4 had deviating black on the door and carpet which contrasted nicely with the grey in the car. My turbo is grey EVERYWHERE!
Didn't submerge it. Took an old coffee carafe, filled with water from coffee machine, mixed in the dye and when it cooled enough not to melt plastic, put it a spray bottle and sprayed it on. Worked it into the carpet with a stiff brush. One of those four ounce bottles of RIT is plenty, I made way too much so I kept reapplying. several times to the point where it wouldn't take anymore dye. After it dried, I brushed every which way with old t-shirts to remove all the loose dye residue. I didn't do a color change, just went from faded black to black. I had just used the regular RIT but they make special stuff for polyester vs nylon. I wasn't sure what kind of carpet the 996 was so I figured I'd try the regular stuff. Worked out well. Grey to black should be ok but red to black or tan to black, you may want to do a little more research or try on a floor mat first.
Let us know how you do!
I had the opposite experience with RIT dye. I tried to dye the carpet behind the seats under the rear window that always gets faded and didn't do much of anything, and the black was more of a purple than a black.
They have a product specially for synthetic fibers thatll keep more of the black aspect. Ive dyed some shoes before and the regular RIT turned the upper a blue color.
Were you successful with that second product? If so, what did you use? I had actually dyed the faded area excessively to the point that dry, loose dye was coming up weeks later after it was long dried. Scrubbed the dyed part with old white t-shirts until no more loose dye lifted. If you're looking for it, it actually looks slightly more black than the more forward carpet but with tinted windows and a half cage, only I will know.
Next issue, I've decided to keep the red leather dash and red leather door cards (upper parts at least). I'm going to try to dye the red door card carpet black to match the factory black carpet. As I don't know if I can plastic weld, I'd like to do it with out taking the door cards apart. Any suggestions?
This or black dash? Or back to red door card?
Picture the lower red carpet as black. A pillar black? Red?
Dyed carpet w DupliColor vinyl & fabric. So dyed/painted the carpet. Not as good of penetration as the RIT. Not in love w the results, may well order the Carpet like Captain Obvious. Advice on getting the carpet to lie on the compound curves? Did you melt the plastic welds and totally disassemble?
I did not totally disassemble to change the carpet on my doors. There is enough give that you pull the original carpet out and tuck the new carpet under the top section without the need to take everything apart. I used some repurposed plastic interior panel removal tools to tuck the carpet it, they worked well.
Trying to keep the red dash. Leaning toward red door cards (and inner rear quarter trim).
Carpet, seats, headliner, the A,B, C pillar trim black. Figure the center console will be all black.
think Im going to follow your lead and get the carpet off Amazon
Picture the console blackand speaker grills in place.
Carpet came off relatively easily. 70% alcohol was good to remove glue and bits of fuzz & backing. What did you use for adhesive? The 3M 90 spray or that brush on stuff?
Now that I'm finished with repairing the rusted out floor pan I'm planning on deviating the stock grey color with black carpet as an upgrade. I now want to run the black color up the sides of the door cards. I think it would make a great transition. I think dying from grey to black should be easy so I'm going to look into Rit dye as the solution. Good thing I didn't go from black to red! Oy.
Bringing this one back to life. I'm also thinking of dying my graphite grey carpet to black to get a two-tone look. Curious to hear from
@Yogibara
and
@TheUnscented
on how yours went. Any photos you can share? Anyone have any photos of Graphite Grey door card with black bottom?
I had used RIT dye to dye some OEM faded black carpet deeper black. Finally got the color right but stiff. Fortunately that part of the carpet was the rear package shelf and not frequently touched. Tried to dye the red door carpet black. To stiff. Eventually gave up, removed red door carpet and sourced new black carpet for lower door panels.
