Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was thinking it was the transmission mounts too.
Leading evidence: 'transmission mounts too' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'transmission mounts too' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace gears' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am using a Ben Auto Design setup which feels pretty nice for the price.

I really thought it was the clutch that would result in a while you're in there job.

Suggestion
Are the mounts wore to the point of allowing the transmission to move enough while changing gears.

Look under there first and make sure the cables are still in their brackets (doesn't need to be on a lift, you can use your phone camera to visualize).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I pulled out into traffic and noticed someone speeding towards me so I accelerated quickly to avoid them rear ending me. It was only 10 feet and I stopped behind another car waiting for the light to change. I always put the car in neutral at lights. Once green I tried to engage 1st geat but it wouldn't engage unless I forced it. But finding the other gears aren't difficult maybe a touch more notchy but doable.
I'm thinking or hoping it's the transmission mounts? Maybe the clutch. Any help would be appreciated before I speak to a mechanic.
This is not that unusual. And I think there is really nothing wrong. I've been driving manual gearboxes my entire life. I have found in some instances you have to double clutch, meaning you have to push on the clutch pedal twice to get into gear. Happens sometimes going into first gear, sometimes when going into reverse. It's no big deal, just what happens sometimes. If you find it hard to get into first gear, move back to neutral, release the clutch, then push in the clutch pedal again and put it into gear.
Thanks DB I too have been driving manuals my entire life and I will try what you suggested but I've had the car for 20 years and it's never been an issue hence my concern.
Add: just saw your post. You are a gristled 996 vet, so my comments are moot.
At the stop, from neutral, push in the clutch and put it in second and then shift it into first. You may need to do this once or twice until it slides in. Sure, you can also try a heall/toe throttle blip.
Whatever you do, don't try to force any shifts. Shifting in the 996 works best as a rhythm, not a forceful jam. Especially when its cold. Works the same way on the track, which is why I never messed with a short shift kit.
Good luck with it!
There are several contributing factors as to why you might be having issues. How old is the gearshift mechanism. These wear a lot over time causing "sloppiness" in gear shifts themselves and sometimes even get stuck or hung up between shifts. When was the last time you changed your transmission oil? Are the mounts wore to the point of allowing the transmission to move enough while changing gears. Some suggestions you might want to look into.
Thanks Viper. I changed the transmission oil 5 Years ago. I was thinking it was the transmission mounts too. I would agree about the sloppiness of the shift linkage. I hope it's one of these two. I appreciate everybody's input. At least when I bring it to the Indy I will have some ideas to contribute.
Once it's in a gear, check to see how much play the shifter has by gently moving it. The shifter cable end is a ball and socket joint which can wear along with other parts of the shifter itself.. There are some affordable aftermarket shifters but avoid the $50 eBay specials. I am using a Ben Auto Design setup which feels pretty nice for the price.
Worn mounts can make the cables pull out of the brackets. Look under there first and make sure the cables are still in their brackets (doesn't need to be on a lift, you can use your phone camera to visualize). Then take a video of the shifter arms while going through the gears in the garage and see if you're consistently getting full engagement going to first.
Sublm8 - awesome advise this makes alot of sense, thinking this will ring true. I'm positive I will be able to diagnose the cars issue after everybody's thoughts and suggestions that took the time today to help
once again thanks a million.
