Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Anyway, I've cleaned the ICV, it was pretty clean to begin with but I cleaned it regardless, I've also tested it with a 9V battery, all good.
Leading evidence: 'Clean icv' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check icv idle control valve' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So next I disconnected the MAF and car started running fine, run for about 15 minutes with no problems, when I plug it back in it dies almost immediately.

Looks like you have a 996.1 with cable throttle, first thing i would do is check your ICV idle control valve.

Tomorrow I'm going to check and clean ICV first, oil cap test for the AOS and if that fails get a smoke test.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, '98 3.4l C2 manual.
Today the car cut off on the driveway, was working completely normal before that. Outside is around 20 Celsius, and the car is warmed up.
It starts every time, sometimes it runs for 10-20-30 seconds and dies, sometimes it dies right after it starts. Seems it runs fine while I'm giving it a bit of throttle, it dies only on idle, which to me suggests it's not fuel related issue.
Each time it dies, or is about to die it makes a loud hissing sound, maybe this can be the clue to what's wrong with it?

On a side note, over the years, when cold outside (around freezing) sometimes on the cold start the first time it starts for a second, cuts out (with a hissing sound), then the next start it starts normally.
Thank you this makes sense. Tomorrow I'm going to check and clean ICV first, oil cap test for the AOS and if that fails get a smoke test. I'll post updates!
Here's the update:
First, I would like to correct myself by saying that the car cuts out on throttle as well, I tried keeping it around 1500-2000rpm and it cuts out all the same, it just doesn't die because the revs are higher.
Anyway, I've cleaned the ICV, it was pretty clean to begin with but I cleaned it regardless, I've also tested it with a 9V battery, all good. Throttle body was completely clean so didn't bother cleaning it further. Smoke test was done - no leaks. Tested AOS with the oil cap trick, all good.
All of the above didn't do anything, car still stalled, it could run perhaps 10-15 seconds max without cutting out. So next I disconnected the MAF and car started running fine, run for about 15 minutes with no problems, when I plug it back in it dies almost immediately.
So it looks like new MAF is due. Interestingly enough, car seems to run smoother and throttle is somehow more linear without MAF.
Is it possible to drive the car with MAF disconnected until the new one arrives, or that's a bad idea?
I've never heard it make that sound before (maybe I just didn't pay attention), but good to know it's normal. I've ordered new MAF, the same one that was in the car, fingers crossed that will fix it.
