I gather the pads I was replacing still had a lot of life so that is why there was a clearance issue.

Suggestion

Next time either dont adhere the dampers to the pads, use a putty knife to cut the dampers free from the pad, or remove the caliper so you have enough room to get them out.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im replacing my brake pads and the rears were stuck. I finally got them out and it appears that part of the pistons fused onto the pads. Do I need to replace the pistons?

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 18773529

Those are the anti squeal dampers. Did you remove the caliper? You will have to extract the part that broke off out of the piston. Here is the part # for the rear. 99635208600 30mm 99635208602. 28mm

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@hbdunn Thanks for the info. I was swapping my street pads for track pads that will squeal. Can I repair this after my track day or am I impacting performance and/or reliability? The calipers have not been removed.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 18773600

If the center part of the damper is flush with the piston then should be fine. If you are going to swap pads back and forth Id leave them out. Much easier with them not installed.

POST 5Original post

Never seen them mangled like that, but perhaps they got corroded or someone banged out the pads with them still attached? Oh, that was you😀. These things are designed to help prevent brake noise, and dont actually need to be adhered to the pad to work. Since youre probably someone who cares, Id get the old broken bits out with needle nose pliers or pry them out with a small flathead. If you have to do the latter put a thin piece of metal between your little pry bar and the piston face to prevent marring. The little metal strips from old windshield wiper blades would likely work well. Next time either dont adhere the dampers to the pads, use a putty knife to cut the dampers free from the pad, or remove the caliper so you have enough room to get them out.

POST 6Original post

Ah! This was me a couple of weeks ago and my rear dampers looked exactly the same when I finally got the pads out and managed to scrape the discs off. One or two of the "hats" might still reside in the piston but didn't interfere with the new pad install. None of the videos/manuals on changing pads mentioned them being stuck like that but sure enough search for "dampers" and you'll find folks with the same issue! I gather the pads I was replacing still had a lot of life so that is why there was a clearance issue. Most of the advice I found on RL was that they aren't necessary so I didn't install new ones myself. Curious -- which new pads did you get?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 18776090

I think the new dampers ship with 3M tape --unsure if they provide a warning too. All great suggestions but when I was doing mine I didn't have enough clearance to use a putty knife and FWIW Porsche recommends new caliper bolts if you remove the caliper. I was also doing the install the day before track day. Shame on me and lesson learned!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18777986

I was installing Pagid track pads for an upcoming DE. My street pads had about 60% left on them. It was a total PITA that literally took me a couple of hours but now that its done it should be a normal job to swap them back and forth.

POST 10Original post

Leave them out.....not necessary in all honesty! You won't hear the difference!
