I found mine from a local FB Marketplace ad for an OEM rack that was installed for show but never used.

They have been used but in great condition with everything included.

I have a second set that is complete and I am using from which I have the dimensions to make the cut.

I hear they used plastic screws on the newer cars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

$~630 to get it from them directly, I purchased one through suncoast a few years ago, you might can find it for cheaper used but would depend on someone selling right now.

Warning: this is how scams present themselves on another forum I visit. Check if the poster has registered only days ago, has a low number of posts which mostly respond to WTB adds...
But the real giveaway imo is the large font.
Ill probably regret this but Id let my OEM 996 roof rack bars go for $600 shipped. I did a test fit once with the porsche bike rack and second time with a surfboard but ended up getting a Thule set for my Panamera and now use that. Was thinking Id carry a surfboard to the beach in the 996 or something
Truthfully, the Thule set on my Panamera are exactly the same as the 996s, just dont have the porsche name on them.
Summary: Thule makes OEM VW, Audi, and Porsche roof rack systems.
Details:
Thule made the OEM roof rack systems for VW, Audi, and Porsche in the past. I was very familiar with Thule's products from having worked in bicycle shops and having owned Thule brand roof rack systems myself.
I've also owned OEM VW, Audi, and Porsche cross bar systems over the years and noticed that it was all Thule. Heck, I have an OEM 970 Panamera cross bars in my basement right now (for sale if anyone wants them), and they are made by Thule. I only bought them because Suncoast's price was near the same as MSRP for Thule.
So, if you ever need accessories, racks, small parts or even keys or locks, just go to your local bike shop or REI that carries Thule and get that stuff.
Another pro tip:
The OEM cross bars mentioned above are all very thick and make
a looooot
of noise in the wind. The noise of the bars on my Panamera was so bad that I would never let them stay attached after I used them. I would always remove them immediately after use.
Both Thule and Yakima offer a line of thinner cross bars which are waaaaay more quiet and aerodynamic and serve the same purpose. There used to be a 3rd company called Whispbar that made the thin units, but Yakima acquired them like 10 years ago which kickstarted their thin line. Then Thule copied it.
So, if you are spending money on new kit, just pay extra for those.
That is very true. However, on the 996/997 (not sure on 991/992 or other models), when buying AM opposed from OEM, and installing on 996/997, the rear rail is always slightly lower than the front rail, causing an upwards tilt of whatever is attached to the rails. it most likely doesnt bother most people i would assume, but for me, i wanted to make sure everything was flush and straight. juuust incase i decide to throw a tent on top lol. the only thing i wish was that the oem rails had a lower profile. they stick up pretty tall compared to aftermarket systems. though i guess thats not a mega deal breaker. and yes, the noise is pretty intensive on the highway lol.
Do any of you know if a roof rack is available for the 996 Targa? The Targa does not have the attachment points on the side of the roof like on the coupes, so I am guessing none are available. Since the Targa is based on the Cabrio body, where does a roof rack attach to the cabriolet?
I've been burned on here recently so super skeptical. Profile says you just joined the forum and all posts are in this ad. I'll be honest, I don't have the warm fuzzies.
Well, for what it's worth, when you are the seller and they are the buyer the risk is in their end. Most scams that I've seen are where:
- Buyer posts a wanted ad: "I'm looking for X"
- Scammer Seller replies: "I have X. Send me money and I'll ship it to you!" They'll often try to get you to communicate OFF of the forum.
- Buyer sends funds.
- Scammer disappears.
Steps 1 and 2 just happened to me a few days ago when I posted a wanted ad for an airbag disable bar in the classifieds here.
I'm not vouching for anyone in this thread (including OP). Just explaining the risks or lack thereof.
In addition, the scammer seller sends photos that they stole from Google photos or an ad on Pelican Parts or somewhere else. All this to convince you that they really do have the item you want.
Before you get too far, check the roof mounting plates to see if everything comes apart properly.
The screws in mine have become one with the rest of the bracket. I hear they used plastic screws on the newer cars. No such luck on mine.
It was enough to make it a "Maybe I don't need a rack" situation.
after half a year no active responses. i will second this advise. when i tried installing mine on a 99. the screws were a type of metal that got seized in, and after trying to unscrew them, they crumbled as if they were tin foil lol. the solution if self tapping doesnt work. is to replace the base plates. i purchased 997 baseplates that came with the plastic screws. all is good now. just need to take the headliner out to get in underneath.
I have a set that I will be selling. It is complete with one caveat. The 2 bars are for the front position. One needs to be machined down to the size of the rear bar. I have a second set that is complete and I am using from which I have the dimensions to make the cut. So, it's just waiting for me to actually do the work and cut it. Here are the front and rear bars showing the difference in length. PM me if you are interested.
Here is the long front bar in the rear bar position. It needs to be cut down. Or, find another rear bar. (good luck)
And here it is in use.
I found mine from a local FB Marketplace ad for an OEM rack that was installed for show but never used. Keep searching, they come up periodically. I love the way that the OEM Thule keep the crossbars level.
