Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So I will change the oil again after I run it 2k or so.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Easiest thing to do is run the best high viscosity, high moly oil you can, change it more frequently 2x a year to keep it fresh, run oil tests after each oil change to establish a trend, make sure your fuel injectors, Maf and oxy sensors are working properly to keep excess fuel out of the bores, run some Techron thru the fuel system a couple of times a year, and then dont baby it but instead, drive the hell out of it.

Respectfully, if you are worried about your bores, why would you run oil with relatively low moly and viscosity and then add what it doesn't need to it when you can find a better oil?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone, I want to get some input on an image I have on my 2004 996.2 #6 cylinder when I removed the plug. This engine has 135k plus on it.
It doesn't smoke, no knocking and runs great. How long do uguys think I got?
#6
Same #6
I see you edited the post to indicate cylinder #6. But you did not change it in the text, just the notes on the images. FYI.
What do the other cylinders look like? That does not look like bore score.
Really! I didn't get that far. I was so bummed about what I saw in #6 I just left my shop. I will remove all the plugs in the next few days. I can't believe your answer, you really think it's not scoring?
Looks to me as if some of the oily deposits from the piston face have been caught between cilinder wall and piston skirt and were dragged along.
Doesn't look to me as if damage has been done.
As explained in the video by slakker: the light is reflected differently (more dazzle) right were scoring has some depth. I don't see that typical in your pics.
I would not have the slightest worry regarding scoring but would check if oil enters the combustion chamber (bad aos possibly)
Whether any of us have it or not, its important to prolong bore life unless you are itching for a rebuild.

Hi everyone, I checked the other 3 cylinders and 2 of them don't have any lines or streaks at all. So I will change the oil again after I run it 2k or so. I'm switching to Liqui Moly green 5w 50 and adding some ZDDP to the next change.
I want to thank you all for your help in answering my questions.

If you are worried about bore scoring you may want to consider an oil that is better suited for the M96 which has higher viscosity with more moly and one that you dont need to add anything to it. Also consider going to a 50 vs a 40 unless you drive it in the dead of winter in the upper midwest.
Respectfully, if you are worried about your bores, why would you run oil with relatively low moly and viscosity and then add what it doesn't need to it when you can find a better oil? Its a suboptimal execise. Plenty of oil threads on rennlist to see virgin oil tests as well as an overabundance of PCA videos that discuss the topic.
Just trying to help your bores. 😁
Well I didn't realize that this oil and this additive are in the " don't buy these things " category. I will have to do more research on a way better oil.
Thanks for your help.

A good video to get started with is the one
@CigarMike
posted earlier explaining aluminum bores and the coatings and why moly is so important and ZDDP is not.
MB, here is a good thread to read thru. Best advice I can give is to stay off of the facebook forums. Scary what people say and recommend. No wonder we have so many new 996 owners that have to fix problems from bad advice given to previous owners. Keep asking questions. The M96 is pretty damn easy to keep running strong.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Hey CG, haven't been on Smuckbook (FB) in 11 years ,and never go back.
Anyway, I will use an oil for my high mileage girl that I believe works best. All the ideas from uguys have been very helpful and I will keep reading through the old an new information that is posted.
Thanks everyone.
