Leading evidence: 'Use q-tip' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'closest match; and you can always shade it darker' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend "ht-445 - carbon gray"' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used Stoddard.com for the savanna beige color of my interior trim parts.

I haven't done it but I think red plastidip is probably the closest match; and you can always shade it darker with their "smoke" if it comes out too bright.

Suggestion
For Graphite Grey, some have recommended the "HT-445 - Carbon Gray" from Hi-Tech Industries.

really hard to tell the scratching on the black interiors as well as the gradual wear on the seats - also really easy to use show polish to clean up black leather seats especially the black supple leather.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone know of a source for matching interior touch-up paint? Brush and/or spray. My '01 996 interior is in excellent condition except for a couple of spots where the paint has chipped revealing the black plastic underneath. Thanks in advance!
Depends on the color and finish you're looking for. If your car has painted consoles (ie. the artic silver ones are fairly common), check out Automotivetouchup.com
For colors like Boxster Red like my car though, that's tougher. I haven't done it but I think red plastidip is probably the closest match; and you can always shade it darker with their "smoke" if it comes out too bright.
I took the Savannah colored ashtray from my car and had it color-matched at home depot in a latex flat enamel combination top coat/primer. I routinely cover up scratches and it looks very good.
+1. SEM paint is perfect. Looks, feels, and smells like interior car finish. Just hope you can find your color. I asked SEM about my color (stone grey) and they referred me to a local rep that would mix up a match for me. meh, too much trouble.what I picked was close enough for now.
If these are scratches on little plastic parts, you can still buy pretty much everything from the dealership or online through Pelican or ECS. Touch up is a temporary solution, but it will eventually flake and will never look perfect.
You can get exact matching dye from this retailer.

I got some graphite grey to touch up the plastic around the power seat buttons, and it came out great.
So touching up with some variety of paint that will probably peel short term and won't match is a better solution?
These are old cars, normally we are correcting for years of wear by previous owners. If you are careful with your 996 interior you won't get nicks, chips, and irregular wear. It's not as if the interior pieces get scratches and damage all by themselves.
I got the Home Depot machine matched paint - be sure to ask for the sample size - and it is terrific!
Wipe off any grime with alcohol, let dry, and touchup the nicks. I used a Q-tip to apply and it flows in nicely.
Yes, a concours judge might identify that they've been repaired, but no one is else likely to know.
And I think the touchup will hold up as well as the original paint did.
BTW, I plan to use the $$$ I saved by not replacing serviceable interior pieces to do another track day!
For small nicks and scratches, use a tiny paint brush (I got a few different sizes from the local Michael's craft store). For larger areas, use one of those foam brushes.
Bring in the ash tray to have them scan it to match the paint color.
I have boxster red interior plastics that are scratched. After some searching I found a thread on renntech suggesting to try
http://www.worlduph.com
. Through emailing the, I've found they sell a plastic binder, which works like a primer on plastic. You can then use the dye they sell in boxster red (and other porsche interior colours) to paint the plastic.
This is a "me too" for the Home Depot approach. The first time I got the ashtray scanned, it was nowhere near close enough to use. But another employee took a second run at it and it's very, very close to perfect. Even my wife, who is a ridiculous perfectionist, approves of it. I even used it in a couple places to touch up the leather.
So right, before you try something else, give this $4 approach a try.
Not gray but one of the brown colors. Seems like there are several and I haven't been able to really identify it. And yeah, lots of scratches on the center console, but also scratches and wear on the seat controls, dash, window trim, hanger hooks. It all looks pretty amazingly fresh now.
yeah i've seen many tan and grey interior cars with those scratches mainly concentrated around the window switches/ashtray and near arm rest lid - most are grey interior out there thats why i made the guess of grey.
doesn't take much to fool the eye with the touch ups.

once you go black you never go back
For me, some of the best premixed paint to match was from
http://www.colorbondpaint.com/
. They have some of the more common Porsche interior colors like my 996's Graphite Grey and it matched up perfectly using a blending technique.
For Graphite Grey, some have recommended the "HT-445 - Carbon Gray" from Hi-Tech Industries.
I got some and did a test shot on a broken piece of trim that I need to replace.
Match was not perfect. It was a little too light, and had a touch less of a blue hint to it.
If you are shooting a whole panel, it would be ok, but it would not quite do for just filling-in a scratch, it probably would not do (at least by my picky sensibilities).
In the attached photo, the top two-thirds of the piece have the test shot on it. At first glance, it looks good, but on close examination, you can see a slight "banding."
latex flat enamel combination top coat/primer worked great for me on my graphite gray interior. I had nicks in horseshoe, gear selector collar and around the window switches and they were really bringing me down. Applied with a foam brush and abra cadabra they are gone!
Thanks to all for posting on this subject.
could you describe the technique for applying this? I'm concerned that the places where the original paint is scratched off will show as surface imperfections. Does the center console need to be sanded before applying the Color Bond? Does the old finish need to be removed? Do you need to use their adhesion promoting primer on pieces like the center console? I have very little experience in painting. Thanks.
Excellent idea. I bought factory code color-matched (Savannah Beige) leather dye and it isn't a very good match with the plastic bits versus leather. There seems to be slight variations across different pieces within the same car, so color-matched off the actual color is perfect (and cheap too!!!).
Big thank you to the people who recommended pulling out the ashtray and getting a sample tub of paint from Home Depot for touching up scratched soft touch plastics. $8 for 8 ounces, and all those annoying scratches are no longer obvious.
Great info everyone, I am going to go Home Depot route too for 2 small nicks. Graphite gray and will use the ashtray.
What type of paint did you ask for? I saw the early post stating
latex flat enamel combination top coat/primer, did you all use this description?
