Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used the instructions from one of the carbon fiber companies that makes aftermarket center consoles for mine.
Leading evidence: 'Use instructions' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect wire- pop "inward"' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

With such good luck on my first DIY project on the 996, I am now going to move on to replacing my IMSB.

What type of paint did you use for the plastic part?

2) Note how the window switches are oriented, or as I did, use tape on each window switch noting both position (1-4) and orientation so you don't have to guess later which way is up/down.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Rennpart, that ashtray delete link did not work, goes to your site but nothing on it.
I am planning on doing the ashtray delete modification and would like to know if there is a preferred method for removing the old ashtray surround portion of the console or does one just start prying?
Thanks from a newbie
Ok, is there a proper technique/tool/cuss word that one uses to get the window switches out? I didn't have much luck removing switches when I was playing around behind the Nav/audio panel. Also, I suppose if I have the new ashtrayless insert in front of me I can look to see what the attachment points are and that should facilitate removal of the old one.
What are replacing with?
I did mine and it was SUPER simple. I don't remember my switches being involved at all.
Just open the ashtray, and pull the ashtray part straight up. It will pop out. Underneath are two screws. Unscrews those and pull that section out.
See the attached picture.
It's been years though, do you have to pop the switches out of that and pop them into the new piece? You might. It ain't hard once you have it out though. My basis for that is the fact that I accomplished it and I'm an idiot.
Remove screw that are under the ash tray then it will come out. Disconnect the wire- pop "inward" on window switches. Push them into the new set up. screw in and your done. Takes 5 minutes... I used the instructions from one of the carbon fiber companies that makes aftermarket center consoles for mine.
I did the ashtray delete on my 996. The window switches pop off using a small flat screwdriver. The first one was a challenge but once you figure it out, the other 3 were a piece of cake.
I took the opportunity to add contrast by painting it alumma-look silver. Turned out great!
Don't forget to unplug the cable to the little light in the ashtray.
The ashtray delete doesn't have the light so just tuck the cable away in the hole.
This was the first mod I did why I got my 996, the extra space is much better than the ashtray space.
Following all of the above advice, it was indeed, easy as pie. With such good luck on my first DIY project on the 996, I am now going to move on to replacing my IMSB. :-)
That's what I was planning on doing since I have the aluminum trim package on the car (shift, break, steering and gauges). What type of paint did you use for the plastic part?
Dupli-Color spray at Auto Zone. I'm sorry but I don't remember the exact color but there were 4-5 shades of silver that were all real close with that very subtle metallic like the OEM aluma look. Since it was in a high contact area, I put 3 coats on as well as a final coat of matte clear poly. It held up great.
I have not got the delete piece yet, does the one from Suncoast (or the ones on Ebay) have a textured finish? I know they only come in black. If textured, did you smooth it down (Light sand)? Thanks
It is fairly easy to change out. Two screws IIRC. You will need to reuse the inserts that you screw into. The switches are easy to pop out. Just make sure you get them firmly seated into the non-smoker piece or they will drop out when you go to use them. I found a ton of change in the console when I put mine in. I got mine on eBay, can't remember cost though.
Interesting thread was surprised when I looked at my 1999 option sticker and found a code for "non smoking car" besides cubby instead of ashtray there is a plug in cig hole has a cig with an X through it, gotta love Porsche options

And this...
1) Remove the ashtray. Look into the hole and you will see 2 torx screws at the very bottom. Remove the screws and the rubber anchors and save them. You will need them since the Ashtray Delete does not come with new hardware.
2) Note how the window switches are oriented, or as I did, use tape on each window switch noting both position (1-4) and orientation so you don't have to guess later which way is up/down.
3) Carefully pull up on the old ashtray housing. The wiring for the switches does not have much slack so be careful. There is a clip on the passenger side of the housing so you may need to give that side a little more pressure.
4) There are 4 switch connectors and one wire for the ashtray light. Pull the switch connectors out from the window switches. They come out just like a plug from a wall outlet, but are much tighter. Pull straight out, don't rock back and forth so as not to bend the contacts. Go slow, again so you don't inadvertently snap a wire. The lighting wire connector comes off easily (note that this will not be used in the Ashtray Delete).
5) Once all four of the connectors are off the switches, you can work on popping out the switches. The switches snap into a plastic rectangular housing. Take a small, flathead screwdriver and insert halfway down the longside of the "rectangle" between the switch and the housing. Gently push the flat head toward the switch and that side will pop up. Hold that side so that it doesn't snap back into place, and do the same on the opposite side. It will pop right out. Much easier than I thought it would be.
6) Do the same for the other 3.
7) Snap the switches into the Ashtray Delete making sure they are oriented correctly as noted in step 3. They go in fairly easily as long as you keep equal pressure on the switch and have them aligned properly. You will here an audible click when they are correctly seated in the housing.
8) Push the connector plugs back onto the switches.
9) Snap the Ashtray Delete into the hole making sure the clip on the passenger side is engaged and the holes in the bottom of the Ashtray Delete line up with the holes in the Center Console.
10) Insert the rubber anchors through the holes in the bottom of the Ashtray Delete. Screw the down the Ashtray Delete with the torx screws.
11) Add the rubber tray and you are done.
We keep the ashtray delete in stock, they are available in a few different colors for early cars. We offer free shipping on all orders.

The cubby's that kcattorney is referringto are the ones where you might have a cd or cassette holder. We keep these as well. Here's a pick installed in our old 996.
