POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I need to install a breath analyser in my 996 and the device installer told my that before installation i need to send my car to the dealership so he can install a wiring harness prior to the anaylser installation. The guy at the dealer told me that they just installed an harness in a 2017 for 1900$. Electronic is probably a lot more simple in a 2004 but he could not figure a price and told me that it would be in the 1500$ range. Anyone have an idea if i can DIY the wiring or help me finding documentation so my indy could do the job ? Thanks Richard

POST 3Original post

This is being mandated by a judge (i.e. DUI conviction), right? The reason I'm asking is that it seems that it will need to be inspected by your authorities to confirm that it was installed properly and will immobilize the car... and it's "fool proof" (i.e. not easily bypassed). I'm sure having an invoice from a professional shop would help speed up the approval process and get you back on the road again. Finding cheap breathalyzers on the market is one thing, but finding a turnkey kit that can immobilize a Porsche is another thing. If you're trying to save yourself a lot of $$$, I'd first call some of the companies that sell complete "InterLock" kits like GuardianInterlock and see if there is a kit for the Porsches. https://www.lifesafer.com/devices/what-is-an-interlock/ https://guardianinterlock.com/

POST 4Original post

That's a little harsh...I don't know if I'd have the stones to come on here and basically admit I was drunk driving. I'm not saying that one doesn't basically gets what one deserves after doing so but he's asking us for help to solve his problem. I get that we joke around a lot here but maybe some things are better left unsaid or unjoked about. Or at least until after his question has been answered...

POST 5Original post

We know nothing about the circumstances. Perhaps a child or spouse was the one who has the requirement. But I agree with b3freak's notes on the validity of the installation. Regardless of who was over the limit, $1500-2000 seems like a relatively low price to pay compared to incarceration.

POST 6Original post

On a serious note, the devices are usually leased and are required to be installed by an approved shop. In my younger years I got a dwi for having two beers at a restaurant and was pulled over for a light out on my license plate. Did not have to get a breathalyzer installed, but the process was tough and will never risk the "two beers again". Here is an article that may be helpful. I'm almost positive this is something that has to be installed by a certified tech. http://carbreathalyzerhelp.com/can-i...-breathalyzer/

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes it was DUI, i was just a little bit over the .08 limit (.105). The company that install the InterLock in my region cannot install it into a 911. i need the harness from the dealership to be install before the interlock device. 1900$ is only for the harness so i need to add the 300$ for the interlock installation + the 125$ monthly fees for 9 months. I admit that i got what i deserved, im not proud of it, but i need to live with it now and im not ashamed of it.

POST 9Original post

U B E R Sorry to hear. Might be easier to just buy a junker car for a few months. This whole "little bit over" is the basis behind all the ad campaignes to your age group.

POST 10Original post

I agree with Lex, use alternate transportation for the duration and start fresh with the 911 when all is sorted. Have a non-restricted friend take you out in the 996 every couple of weeks to keep it exercised and healthy. At $1200 you can get yourself a decent enough beater that you can probably get away with just putting gas into it for 6-12 months.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13897595

Richard, shame shouldn't come from a mistake, but from repeating the same mistake. Keep your head up and thank God you didn't get hurt or hurt someone else. There are options, but cross one bridge at a time and remember, you can't choose your circumstances, but you can choose your attitude. We wish you the best and hopefully someone will provide an economical harness or maybe a cheaper daily driver that can save you money.

POST 12Original post

Pretty sure the breathalyzer company will not install their test unit if you try a DIY job. It has to come fully baked from Porsche, complete with anti-tamper seals, certificate from mfg, etc. Sorry about the circumstance.

POST 13Original post

Never had any experience with those but a few around me have do the work and get it right, an associate had one and left his car unlocked a teen party broke out and all the kids thought it would be cool to check their BAC despite the data (perhaps 8 - 10) blowing different levels in very short periods of time the state would not allow any reprieve that and the early models were notorious for breakdowns, inaccuracies and some general hosing from the supplier this was quite awhile ago, I would hope that the tech has improved best of luck with this

POST 14Original post

This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on rennlist.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 13897795

Apparently, you haven't read (or seen) "I.H.I." on RL.

POST 16Original post

Buying a beater is not a solution unless he sells 996 to a friend for the mandates interlock period. Because interlocks have to be installed in all vehicles owned by the " perpetrator". Also if you get pulled over and DUI routine starts, mouth shut and refuse field tests for breath and balance crap. Call lawyer if you have one right there. Have lawyers saved in the phone. When taken to the station, refuse breath again, they will get warrant for blood draw. Here, depends on your ***** level you can drop the " I am a Muslim" card.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 13897873

Totally depends on the state, in MI you get one chance to take the test offered, either blood or breath, refuse that and you get 6 points on your license and automatic suspension of your license for 1yr, then they get the warrant for the blood draw. As far as interlocks go, you do not have to get one installed even if ordered to do on any of your vehicles, however one must be installed on any vehicle you drive. But if you refused the test that was offered, then you don't have to worry about an interlock as you won't have a license anyways. Refuse the road side tests, no problem, refusing the road side PBT will result in a $100 civil infraction. Drop the "I am a mooslum" card and you'll get a congrats, are you going to take the test or not?

POST 18Original post

Same thing here in Ontario. refuse or fail to properly complete the test - auto dui.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 13897955

It's not an auto DUI, but Michigan has an implied constant law, meaning once you sign for your drivers license, you consent to complied with all lawful orders during a traffic stop. Hence losing your lisence regardless of the outcome of the DUI case, sober or not. So even if you refuse, your blood is sent to the MSP for analysis. Then those results are presented in court as evidence. From there people usually challenge the legality of the stop, because you can't challenge the blood test results. Well you can try, but good luck getting those thrown out.

POST 20Original post

would it make sense to buy some reasonably priced beater that requires a cheap and basic installation and just use that until youre time is up ? why take the chance cutting up your good car ? spend 2 grand on an Altima or something, 500 to install the rig, then when youre done sell the Altima off and that's that. Porsche remains intact...

POST 24Original post

FWIW here in Melbourne it's 0.05 BA and its a second offence that you get the interlocking device installed by the state rather than having to organise it yourself. I'd have nightmares of some dodgy installer drilling holes into my dashboard and chopping up my wiring loom. It's taken very seriously here in Australia as it's a problem. Interesting situation, at least it didn't end in tragedy. If in doubt uber is the way to go, best of luck sorting it out.

Posted by M3: "You mean using a service i pay for is now considered freeloading? And I don't/won't ever use uber or any other ride share program. If I do go that route it's traditional cab company or nothing." You are paying AAA to tow you when the CAR is broken down, not you. Sorry, but you are only getting this "service" because you lie to AAA about your circumstances. I have AAA, and while I consider it cheap compared to the peace of mind it gives me (and I've used them a couple of times), this kind of deception (cause that's what it is) just drives the premiums up for the rest of us. You don't come off as an *** to me, but I don't think you see anything wrong with your actions. Just my 2 cents.

POST 48Original post

This thread is starting to remind me of the guy that dumped on the Boxster owner at the car show that offered to let his kid sit in his car. I was amazed that anyone would go on a public forum and let everyone know what a tool he was. OP had the ***** to admit he screwed up, and was looking for help. Bad original decision on his part, but he seems to have acknowledged that and that speaks well for him. This other nonsense just depresses me. Shouldn't have to explain morals, but then again I guess I need to recognize that not everyone thinks like me.

POST 49Original post

UBER and Lyft are always going to be your best friends. Sorry about your circumstance, we all make mistakes, just make the necessary corrections with yourself. For what it's worth, uber is so readily available and CHEAP here in Vegas I take it even if I'm only going to have one drink. No more than $10 one way anywhere I am going (unless strip then around $20), definitely worth the peace of mind. As for the breathalyzer, I know it would kill me to chop into my Porsche. I would take the beater route, but Kalashnikov brought up a good point about not being able to own a car without the system. If you own the car outright, do you have a loving mom/dad/grandma you could sign ownership too? Then when this is over transfer title back to your name. They wouldn't even have to register it, and keep documentation showing the car doesn't really have X amount of additional owners. Just a thought.

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 13902237

Come on man, really??? M3, I don't mean to throw stones in your glass house, but two wrongs don't make a right. Gaming the system hurts all of us that pay premiums and play by the rules. If you want to drink to the point of inhibiting your driving, then call your spouse or a friend to drive you home. I hope you have at least one of those two.

POST 51Original post

Quotes source post: 13902797

Truth be told I was just being an ***, I've got better things to do then call AAA for tow after drinking. I don't drink often, but when I do I have a plan before hand, because I'm the kind of guy that likes to tie a real buzz on. That plan never, ever includes uber though...traditional cabs, or designated drivers fine, uber, no thanks.

I wasn't gonna admit to it, but - yeah, I did it once. In fact, I did it in a 914 of all things. We were in Tijuana and left our cars on the San Diego side many years ago. My GF and I went down for a party, and I was over the limit. It was one of the stupidest things I did, even though we only drove about 6 miles to her house. No excuses, youth - distance - night - none of it matters.
