At this point I used a dremel and a body saw to complete the cut out, now the aerocatch recessed into the hood.

As for the locking, it depends if you plan on using the factory latch set up.

Suggestion

use a paint pen or other transferable marking substance and apply to the top of the pin, lower the hood until the hood makes contact with the pins and transfers the marking substance, this will show where you need to drill through the hood.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need to install aero catch hood pins to my carbon fiber hood and Im looking for location and pics for the install or tips on how to use them or standard latch pins thanks

POST 2Original post

The Aerocatch installation is a lot more involved then what you would get with standard hood pins. I drilled out 2 locations on the front of the tub to mount the pins. At this point, mount the pins at a height that will allow the hood to almost close before contacting the pins. use a paint pen or other transferable marking substance and apply to the top of the pin, lower the hood until the hood makes contact with the pins and transfers the marking substance, this will show where you need to drill through the hood. Drill a small pilot hole from the bottom of the hood where your marks have been made. Lower the hood over the pins and observe through the hold that your pins are roughly centered in the hole. Once happy, drill out the hole to the size required for your pin. Now you will raise the pins so that when you close the hood, the latching hole on the pin protrudes through the hood. Lock the lock nuts down and I apply some loctite. Now you need to cut out the holes in the hood for the aerocatch. This will consist of a hole in the top of the hood that the aerocatch will recess into, and a hole in the bottom of the hood through the supports to allow the aerocatch locking ring. I used the actual aerocatch as my template, I centered the hole in the hood where the aerocatch latch slid through and traced the bottom outline of the latch. At this point I used a dremel and a body saw to complete the cut out, now the aerocatch recessed into the hood. Cutting the bottom of the hood requires a bigger opening due to the fact that the support is the same size as the shelf that holds the aerocatch to the top of the hood. I just eyeballed this until I could slide the locking ring into the recess in the hood support. My carbon hood is foam core, so I had to go in and dig a bunch of that stuff out. Once the locking tab is in place I simply drilled through the mounting holes on the aerocatch and installed each screw through the hood and into the locking tab below. As a prep task, I superglued the nuts into the support ring so they would not fall out the bottom while I was getting everything secured as they are not captured in the locking ring, was happy I did this. Pin locations. Cut out in the bottom hood support Finished product

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the rapid response I was hoping to mount them more to the sides was hoping to see what others have done

POST 4Original post

With the aerocatch, since they sit below the hood surface, just be sure wherever you mount them, there is enough clearance for them to not hit the tub when the hood shuts. I spent a lot of time looking for install pictures on a 996 and found very little, most people (including the cup cars) just used standard pins... I like that gucci **** though Good luck.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lol Gucci azz I guess we both are

POST 6Original post

What did you use to cut the larger holes in the carbon fiber? Does it splinter any?

POST 7Original post

Body saw and dremel - in retrospect, I could have done it easier with a couple different size hole saws. No, does not splinter, DOES create a **** ton of dust - respirator and full face shield, ****ty pair of mechanics gloves that just get used for stuff like that, long sleeves etc...

POST 8Original post

Another Gucci azz checking in... 2025 is when I finally install my Carbon Fiber hood, so I'm about to order the Aerocatch hoodpin. Is there any reason the alignment of the catch needs to be at a 90* angle (North-South or East-West) ? I've never really liked the way look, and have a few ideas to 'hide' the look. Being able to rotate it a few degrees to match some body lines would be helpful Also, I'm leaning towards the non-locking ones, but my gut says I should probably get a locking one... Thoughts?

Ive seen both and it seems like its an aesthetic thing. Ive been looking at the detent type but the aeros are def preferred. As for the locking, it depends if you plan on using the factory latch set up. Youll still need to release the Aeros to unlatch the hood via the latch inside the car.

POST 10Original post

I wish mine had the OEM hood latch connection, but sadly mine is more 'race-car' so I must use pins up front. Leaning towards the locking ones
