We changed the filter and gasket for the tiptronic oil pan, and followed the procedure to top up the ATF.

On the tiptronic, the pinion gear has no shims to adjust the depth, it is fixed on the bearings and cannot change location...

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I am doing some research about replacing my ring and pinion gear in a tiptronic based on Mercedes 722.6, not the ZF one.
In the Porsche diagrams, the pinion and ring gears are not listed as parts. So one can find replacements here:
https://www.tourcar.shop/Porsche-911...ebe-7222700500
or at ebay from the same company:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/264688537310
To change the ring gear, follow my instructions on post #14 of this:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post19792573
To change the pinion gear, follow the instructions from this video (excellent explanatory work by IPT Performance Transmissions):
You Tube
It is a good idea to replace the gaskets, these can be found here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/123837227950
Torque specifications based on the video above (credits to
IPT Performance Transmissions):
Transfer Case Bolts (Torx T-45) 22 ft.-lbs. (blue loctite is recommended)
Through Bolt (8mm Allen Head) 38-50 ft-lbs (blue or red loctite recommended)
Output Flange Nut (30mm 12 point) 95-120 ft-lbs (red loctite recommended)
A good idea to change the filter and ATF while in there....
Thats Not how u check a r&p pattern. machinist blue is too thin. They make marking compond and its usually white or yellow. Bearing grease will also work in a pinch.
i have not looked into the porsche gear sets but on a traditional rear the pinion depth is set with shims (i think porsche machines this depth) the backlash is traditionally set by shiming the carrier at the bearings. One day ill look up a tutorial in these boxes.
Machinist blue is a matter of speaking for checking gearlash. This is what I would use:
ACDelco GM Original Equipment 10-5055 Gear Marking Compound - 1 oz
Shims were there when I changed the bearings (see my previous post). I don't remember how many, but all were put back at the same place. Now I will update both the pinion and ring gears, I will report the process and results.
So we replaced pinion and ring gears.
All with the engine in the car, lowering the tiptronic gearbox as shown here.
The video on my first post was very helpful.
Shims were placed exactly as they were before the operation. All looks good and the transfer case is back to factory condition. We changed the filter and gasket for the tiptronic oil pan, and followed the procedure to top up the ATF. Reset adaptations and all is good.
On the tiptronic, the pinion gear has no shims to adjust the depth, it is fixed on the bearings and cannot change location... move forward or backwards.
Shims exist on the ring gear to move it left or right compared to the pinion gear.
Im pretty sure thats how the manuals r. Did u measure the backlash with a dial caliper for the old and new gear sets to compare? I have no idea what the spec is but this would confirm u r in the ballpark with the new set.
We compared both the ring gears and the pinions, we measured them with a micro-meter (if you get what I mean) we found no differences. The teeth of the old gears were skinnier... The result is a differential with no whinning or other sound.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
