Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Had it towed to a local Indy I use, and they replaced the fuel pump with a dealer supplied pump.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fuel pump' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'of a clogged sender' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean glass container)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Had it towed again, they say a line fell off the pump, needs a new pump, covered since it was replaced recently.

so to keep them honest get your old parts and examine the fuel filter for trash ( flow backwards into a clean glass container)...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On my 2004 Base 996, a few months back it wouldnt start. Had it towed to a local Indy I use, and they replaced the fuel pump with a dealer supplied pump.
2 months of driving around, and I end up rolling to the side of the road. Had it towed again, they say a line fell off the pump, needs a new pump, covered since it was replaced recently.
waited for the new pump, but when they went to put it in, Im told the sending unit was clogged.
they are still covering the pump, but I need a $722 sending unit (the clogged sending unit caused the line to come off the pump?)
Im having a hard time understanding how a sending unit can get clogged enough to wreck a pump.
Can anyone explain this system where it makes sense?
thank you,
-Eric

The 2004 996 has no "replaceable fuel filter" per se...the fuel filter is built into the sending unit, also the pressure regulator is built into it unlike the earlier models that has a separate replaceable fuel filter and pressure regulator...
You must have gotten a load of trashy fuel at one of your pit stops...
Autoatlanta has the semder for arojnd $380 and deporsche is about $530 if u r buying your own parts.
The hose coming off is from them their install of the pump and not connecting it fully. I would be suspect of a clogged sender. It would require a lot of trash but maybe it was pieces from the original pump?
The line coming off has happen a few times when the installer did not click the locks on the quick disconnect, It happen to the kid after I even warned him about it and if came off 2 months later on his 2002 C2, I would ask proof of the clog sender.
I need to get a look at it, it was described as a permanent line basically breaking off the pump, requiring a replacement pump.
they provide the parts, so in this case where the new pump broke, they cover it..
its an odd position Im in, I do my own work on the car back in Arizona, but Im working in San Jose without any tools out here, so Im a bit stuck. Most shops are very backed up, and Ive got a pretty good relationship with this shop, and they get me in quick when Im stuck.
In this case Im just confused about how a fuel sender can clog up, but its becoming clear.
thanks everyone!

It sounds reasonable to me since IF the "integrated fuel filter" stops up the dead-head pressure on the pump will exceed 125+ PSI and can blow off a line or break something...and the trash can actually settle in the bottom of the filter and become "unclogged" for a short period of time before completely becoming clogged again...( driveabilty was my forte for 30 years)
But you never know, I hear about unscrupulous shops all the time
. so to keep them honest get your old parts and examine the fuel filter for trash ( flow backwards into a clean glass container)...
