It's the visual part that caused the issue, they didn't actually test anything.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I couldn't pass CA smog check today because they didn't know what this sealed off tube is in my engine bay. I couldn't figure it out either from images online. It's an '03 C4S.

POST 2Original post

That tube is for the "Venturii Vacuum Booster" that was used on some TipTronic and x51 model engines... It is suppose to hook to the big rubber elbow that it is next to .... Someone has swapped the engine and/or the air box because they are not 100% compatible ...but if you have a 6-speed non-x51 with it plugged off it should still pass SMOG, just maybe the visual part is what is getting you flagged...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh interesting, yes it's a non-X51 6-speed. Is there a way to know if the engine or airbox has been swapped? It's the visual part that caused the issue, they didn't actually test anything.

I heard a lot of stupid things about CARB inspectors in CA from folks who live there. It is surprising to me that a smog dude will shoot you down for something he doesn't even understand. Must have tagged it as an illegal modification...sigh.

Why would it be surprising? Why would a smog guy ignore an obvious hack? I've failed visual for waaay more subtle stuff than that. You list your location as 'Flyover Country' so I'm guessing you don't have to smog. If so, I'm jealous.

Only if you the full records from the last 25 years since the car left Stuttgart .... Just find a used rubber elbow that has the connection point on it and install then head back to the SMOG guy... Like this one .... https://www.ebay.com/p/1223053309
