Suggestion

If you go to the fuse to run an inline switch be sure to get a high amperage,30 amp capable switch, as the fuse (depending on year of car) is either a 25 or 30 amp.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I would like to add a fuel pump cutoff switch to my 996. In my classic vw I have a switch on the fuel pump so after winter storage I can turn engine over a few times and build oil pressure before starting after sitting long periods. Should I wire switch to fuse or fuel pump relay? Hoping someone can recommend safest way of wiring a switch in that will not cause any damage. I would like to replace one of the dummy switches on the dash with one that lights up when fuel pump is OFF. Perhaps an additional PSM switch could used? Thank you for any advice or insight!!!

Well, if its just after winter storage, why complicate the matter. Just pull fuel pump fuse..? If you really want a switch mounted in dash, then go to the relay and break the control voltage side of the relay so you can use a low amperage dash switch. If you go to the fuse to run an inline switch be sure to get a high amperage,30 amp capable switch, as the fuse (depending on year of car) is either a 25 or 30 amp. PSM type switch is not high amperage capable and will burn up shortly. jmo

Ive read that turning this M96 engine over with the starter alone does not build sufficient oil pressure or volume to prevent engine wear on cold start.
