Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I mean, in terms of value proposition, unless they did the fab work themselves, adding scoops/a custom deck/doing that glass job/a full respray on top of a even a ratty, but running C4S would buy you a Turbo.
Leading evidence: 'Run c4s would buy you a turbo' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run c4s would buy you a turbo' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Walking down the street and a 996 caught my eye, as they do. Great ice blue color. But the more I looked, the more confused I became. Badging said targa 4S. There was never any such model that I know of. The top was glass like a targa, but the rear side windows were classic shaped and not pointed like a targa. Furthermore, there are side scoops like a turbo. Spoiler is unique as well. Rear bumper looks like C4S. Not sure about the front bumper cover. It must be some aftermarket conversion, but everything lined up well and looks well done. Strange things to do to a car. Anyone seen anything like it?
That one looks to be "Polar Silver " here is another one in Gray ...

I don't know who did these but they cost a chunk of change .....
Thats gotta be a really clean aftermarket chop job where they cut the center roof section out and replaced it with glass to not have a seam where the Targa section was welded on. Only explanation I can think of as Id expect even a SPECIAL WISHES car would be done with Porsches standard slap a Targa roof on a Cab technique? Weird.
I love seeing this and it's a dream of mine. The only difference is I'd love the traditional Targa top on the 996. The closest thing I found are these CGI pictures from
Artem Shkirenko
that look awesome. Not sure how feasible it is but if I'm ever in the means I'd love to have this done on my C4S.
I bought some Turbo Twists wheels from a guy that got into making Frankenstein Porsche 996 cars from bunches of cheap wrecked ones from CoPart. Not my cup of tea, but heck, he seemed to enjoy it.
If I had to make a wild guess, this car started out as a Carrera 4S (note wide body) and then the mod shop cut and added the Targa roof, side air scoops, and Turbo rear deck lid.
Considering that a traditional Targa is just a Cabriolet conversion done at the factory, not unfeasible. The shop that built my 3.8 did this 993 conversion.
The scoops are a REALLY hard job to do, let alone pull off this well. Cutting out the center of the roof and tossing glass in is a BREEZE by comparison. I still think the most logical answer is its a true Turbo that someone modified.
That looks awesome. The only caveat is that the aircooled Targa rear glass may not have the proper proportions to the 996/7 generation. That being said, the same issue may be with the rear glass form a 991/2 Targa that went back to the same style.
Actually not that far off. 993 Cab is about an inch narrower than a 996.1 Cab. Might need to fab and graft like a collar to the body of the car to shrink wrap it around the glass.
Looks like a Turbo with a Targa roof fit into it.
If someone went through that much trouble, could also be repainted. Colour looks a lot like Horizon Blue Metallic from the 964 era.
Yea... no doubt. Like I mentioned, the guy that I bought the wheels from actually added the Turbo scoops to a NB Carrera. They actually looked good. I've seen a lot and most of them look wrong on a narrow body car.
Now, regarding the "Targa 4S" car in this thread... I'm trying to get into the mind of the owner and/or shop that had this done. We all know that the Turbo cars are much more valuable to the general Porsche pool than Carreras, mainly because of the Mezger engine. Therefore in my opinion, if this car originated as Turbo model from the factory, then why didn't the owner or shop configure the deck emblem to say, "TARGA TURBO" or something along those lines?
IMHO, because it started out as a Carrera 4S and someone wanted to make it LOOK like a Turbo with Targa glass, but since it was truly a C4S from the factory, they thought it was be "
poser
" to add Turbo on a non-Turbo originated car. Same reason people turn their noses up to Carreras with aero kits that have GT3 emblems on the deck lid and GT3 logos on the side.
Also, I've seen lots of people add the side scoops to force feed NA engines. Call the Porsche version of RAM- AIR induction. haha!
@ZuffenZeus
I mean, in terms of value proposition, unless they did the fab work themselves, adding scoops/a custom deck/doing that glass job/a full respray on top of a even a ratty, but running C4S would buy you a Turbo. Doesnt shake out IMO. And the scoops on a Turbo feed directly into the cars intercoolers; again, Im sure ppl have done it for aesthetics, but doesnt make much sense for the money/energy just to cool the engine compartment. Either way, weird *** car! I hope they wear hats or sunscreen 🤠
Id expect a 996 to wear that **** like a hermit crab wears its shell lol. The 991Targas were all 4S wide-body cars, and even the 991 Carrera was very wide.
Yea man... totally agree.
But, I think if it was my car and it was originally a Turbo from the factory but later modified, I'm still calling it a TURBO, not a C4S or even 4S.
Maybe the owner was trying for what Porsche did here on the 997? (see picture)
This is like my dream car. A Turbo with the roof and rear hatch from the Targa. Just make the roof glass fixed with a window shade. In addition, my own Targa is Polar Silver over Natural Brown. so extra points there.
My assumption is this isn't a Sonderwunsch car as it would already be heavily documented and known (?). Props to whomever built it.
I'd posted that one a while ago but it's a little less confusing, as they could have started with a C4S convertible, before adding turbo convertible rear wings and decklid and a Targa roof assembly.
The one posted by OP is a lot more work since loads of cutting / fabricating were likely required. It looks like the c-pillars are completely custom to account for the Targa rear window being narrower than the coupe's. You can tell as there is a weird transition between the part that sits in front of the decklid and the window / c-pillar:
Looks incredible though!
