Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm reposting this under a different title since I used the wrong terminology prior - it's a rear spoiler issue, not a clamshell issue...any thoughts are appreciated I have a 996 c2 coupe and have a question on the rear wing/spoiler. How much shake/rattle/vibration should be visible when driving? Right now, when I look in the rearview mirror, it doesn't look bad until I hit 70+ on the highway, where there then is a decent visible vibration. I've looked at the spoiler in my garage and it all seems tight and there isn't any play, so I'm not sure if that movement is just bounce from the back end of the car (which might mean I need to fix my suspension). But, I also don't want to have bad or breaking spoiler. Anyone have insights here?

POST 2Original post

Have you tried to further isolate the problem by examining all of the components in the lift system? Is the deck lid, spoiler base, and spoiler cover (i.e. plastic grille) attached firmly? I would imagine over time, these bolts and fasteners loosen which would require re-tightening.

POST 3Original post

At 70+ mph, from what I can observe out of the rearview mirror, my spoiler is rock solid. I would suggest manually raising your spoiler and grabbing it with both hands see if anything moves around. Not high tech, but you might find something loose.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I just went out and manually raised the spoiler and took off the plastic cover and checked the nuts/bolts and tightened them. That said, they weren't really loose in the first place. But, there remains some play in the spoiler. If I lightly push down on it, as wind would while driving, the spoiler depresses a tad (not a lot but noticeable) and the sides flex with it. It might be older plastic that has more play or it might be the hydraulics in the lift mechanism isn't as strong? Doesn't seem broken - goes up and down as it should - and seems attached well at the points where it should be attached, but the middle flexes and so do the sides when lightly pushed upon....

POST 5Original post

I see the same thing in my rear view mirror; it looks like the spoiler vibrates up and down a couple millimeters at highway speed or greater. I haven't really noticed if it persists at all speeds or if it's just a resonance at a particular speed. I've chosen not to worry about it.

POST 6Original post

Stop looking at your spoiler while driving 70 MPH!

POST 8Original post

I can't see my spoiler in the rear view while driving (yes I know it works/raises because I've had a passenger check on it... )... Is your head up against the roof or something?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, I can see the lip of the spoiler through the rear view mirror - and I do have to try to look at it, it's not readily noticeable. Frankly, I think it's more likely that I need suspension upgrade (original still on car) and possibly alignment so that my car drives smoother and rattle/vibrations stem from bounce of back end while driving at higher speeds.

I can hear the discussion now...: "Honey I really need these new coilovers because my spoiler is rattling..." Silence and a dirty look from "the better half"...

POST 11Original post

I can see my spoiler while driving and it vibrates a little. If I manually raise it I can hear it chatter on the way back down. It most recent trick is so extend at random times, like, when stopped at a light. Easy way to look like a douche.
