Due to the fact that I used too much sealant on the Bank2 cam cover (I got careless I guess) I had to take it back off, clean it all up and re-seal it.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just looked at an extremely clean, 36k mile 1999 996. I really like the car. Interior is spotless. Exterior is all original paint as verified with paint meter. A few minor blemishes that paintless dent repair may be able to handle. I'll have a PPI done, but I wanted to know what you all think about the oil on the engine. The garage floor was clean, but there was residual oil on the engine. I pulled the dipstick. Engine oil looked fine, clean, but not brand new. I rubbed some on my hand and put a magnet to the oil and saw nothing stick to the magnet. CarFax agrees with mileage. No proof of IMS being done. Build date is 9/98 and in service date is 12/98. A few other questions about options: LSD and Active Brake - what's the difference? And can you have one without the other? 537: What's "positrol"? What are the Comfort Seats? VERY CONCERNING IS THE DASH: ISN'T IT SUPPOSED TO HAVE ALUMINUM GAUGES? IS IT POSSIBLE SOMEONE SWITCHED THE GAUGES IN AN EFFORT TO FALSIFY MILEAGE? The car certainly looks to be 36k miles, and the CarFax agrees with that, but why are the gauges not aluminum? POST 2Original post

What do they want for it? I can tell you if it's a 1998 build, someone swapped out your headlights and taillights to have the newer, clear-lens look. My guidebook tells me that the 1998 cars had the orange/amber "egg yolks" on the headlights and orange turn signal indicators on the taillights as well. Here's an example:

POST 3Original post

The dial faces can be swapped. Could be a former owner didn't like the white/aluminum look. If the reported miles otherwise check out, I wouldn't worry about it. More concerning to me is that there is no leather listed for the seats (or much else). Go look at cars that have leather before you jump. The comfort seats are the standard seats. Sport seats were the other option. A 99 has the dual row which is a big plus for the IMSB, but at 36k this has done a lot of sitting which is bad for the IMSB (among other things). At the end of the day, the LSD is the only option worth discussing here. This is barely above a stripper car. For a number, I haven't been following closely for the last 6 months so I may be out of date. That said, IF I loved the car, $20k would be the outside I'd consider. Given that it is such a basic model and low miles aren't really a good thing for 996s, 16-18 would be much better.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I would definitely start off by doing IMS. But what about the engine leaks? Is that valve covers? heads? I've been looking and I see a lot of `99's with these headlights. I can't figure out when the "yoke" changed. And if it was changed by an owner, I'm ok with it anyway. I wish it had white face gauges. It's a used car dealer that has it. It's a 2 owner car. He's asking $24k. He thinks IMS is a $1,600 job. I suspect it's a bit more, especially in NYC area. Yes, car sat a lot, clearly. But if I change IMS, and ideally whatever else is leaking, what else should I watch for on a very low mile car? Assuming I can get IMS and valve cover leaks (if that's what it is) all accomplished for, say, $3k, I'm thinking paying $20k would be a good deal, based on what I'm seeing sold on BaT and others. I'm ok with a stripper model. I don't care much about leather or not. This one is in such good condition inside. And I love the LSD rear.

POST 5Original post

Nice car. IMS is personal issue. But early cars are pretty solid. Weeping oil for a low mi car is normal. I wouldnt consider touching it. If PPI is clean buy it and have fun.

POST 6Original post

Back when the yolks were not desirable at all, lots of people swapped them out. So no big deal, just wanted you to be made aware because lots of guys shop the 1998 cars to have them, specifically. Since they're now quite rare, it can be a unique feature to the car when compared to other Mk.1's. IMO, $24k seems like a lot for a 99 (MY) that needs work. Granted, I stopped paying attention to the market after I purchased my car a few years ago... based on the banter around these parts the prices are not skyrocketing. Definitely find a mechanic that knows his 996's because he will be worth the premium. IMS will likely be in the $2,200-$3,200 range depending on if you want to do the clutch while you're in there.

POST 7Original post

The options together 220, 222, 224 are the version of PSM(stability control) before it was offered on the C2 car. LSD is self explanatory, traction control will reduce power if slip is detected, and ABD will apply brake to the inside rear wheel in the event the sensors detect lateral acceleration combined with slip. I have it, and it's a nice feature for sporty drivers. The comfort seats are nicer, but not great. It has turbo 'look' twist wheels but they aren't the hollow lightweight type. The colors bore me to tears. But - people do like it. The oil leaks concern me because it's both sides, it hasn't been addressed, and there's a theory of comparative neglect which says 'if he hasn't fixed this, what else?'. As for the lights, inst cluster, trim - meh, whatev. I would pay around $20k as it is low miles, and plan to clean up the oil leaks(valve cover, maybe from so much sitting, the seals dried out). Do IMBS, low temp thermo, full flow filter, and mag drain plug. Maybe $4000 upkeep if you have a decent indy shop do all the work in the NY area. Early cars are going to be the best value. Good engine castings, dual row bearing, light weight, and very tossable. They are the driving cars, and sadly this one hasn't been on the road much(or maybe it has, given that leak?). Over $20k, Keep shopping, don't be afraid of higher miles. Or, buy mine! only $23k, with all that work done already plus more.

POST 9Original post

Interesting observations here. I'll add that mine is bone-dry underneath and inside. Yours is pretty seepy in areas. Traditionally I'm not scared by wet engines, but that may be a dangerous prejudice carried over from my air-cooled days.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14568290

Yea, I'm not totally scared of a little moisture either. My GTO leaks from the rear main seal. Par for the course. It's not a lot by any means (unless my PCV isn't plumbed correctly). I was thinking that maybe this 911 first needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and then DRIVEN like the car was meant to be driven! Mostly, I wanted to know if this was a sign of a known issue, possibly with the cam covers or something. If it's cam covers, is that an engine-out job? Remember, this car would need an IMS regardless (even though that's not engine out, but someone will be in there at least).

POST 12Original post

Don't forget these low mile cars are the one's more prone to catastrophic failure. I'd pull the motor and address all of the preventative items you can before "driving it the way it was intended"!! Good luck with your decision.

POST 13Original post

Be prepared to replace the suspension, sway bars, lower control arms, and drop links if you want it to "feel" like a Porsche. It has low miles but all the bushings would be dried out due to age if they are original. Check the manufacturing date on the tires too. The interior does look very nice. $20k - 21k maximum these days. Plus have $5k ready in cash if needed, and it WILL be needed.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14569133

Aside from IMS (and RMS), and I guess that oil leaking is from the AOS based on my research, but aside from those items, what are the other things to watch in terms of catastrophic failure or items to address right away? Bushings looked pretty good, but I was crawling on the floor, so a PPI will help with that.

POST 15Original post

For 36K miles that car has had one helluva life! I'm not talking about exterior or interior, but the underside looks like 136K. Mine has 143K miles and looks better than that. Those oil leaks might be the AOS, or the vario-cam actuator seals leaking. A lot of rust or corrosion underneath. Seems strange for 36K miles, but if it has been driven during winter months could be why. Also, from the picture, the inside rim of the left wheel is scrubbed pretty bad. Ran over something and it really scraped up the inner rim. For what it is worth, a 98/99 with dual row IMS bearing is the car to have. I would not molest that, just oil/filter change and more miles. More problems come with changing out the dual row bearing than leaving it in place. If you are going to lose sleep over it, have it changed out to the LN Engineering Jake Raby Solution and be done with it. $24K is way too much in my opinion. With what needs to be done $18.5K is more like it. Pick up a copy of PCA Panorama and check out the 996 listings. Many good examples less than $20K.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yea, well, welcome to NY and the winter months! Based on carfax, it didn't do a lot of winter driving, often NONE, but to me this one doesn't look bad under there aside from oil leak. Yea, I noticed that rim. I didn't see it when I was there, probably cause I was focused on the leaks. The outsides of the rims are nearly flawless though. I'd put in a new IMS, especially if I need to replace the AOS, seems like that's nearly a 2 for 1 on labor. Which IMS would be best for this early production model? It's confusing to read.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 14569535

IMS solution. Second would be the retrofit. There is about $800 difference, retrofit carries a warranty with a life period, IMS solution is a whole fix. Early builds typically have dual row bearing.

POST 18Original post

Looks nice. I bought a 99 with ~32k on the clock. I cut the oil filter open every oil change. No metal means I am good until another oil change, ~3-4 K miles. Don't be scared. I read and reread so many threads on this forum with someone parroting the dreaded IMS. It is real but I believe it is not as prevalent as many detail here. Esp. for the 99's Is it a risk yup. Will it put a smile on your face every time you drive the car yup. Looks good to me, PPI is good, it is a 99(double bearing), 20K all day long. You may not be able to resale the next day for a profit, but life is better with a 996. If it is what you are looking for, buy it and have much fun.

POST 19Original post

I'd say buy a car with all the stuff done from Rennlist if you can, you'll save a lot of money. Don't be afraid of miles, at this point, you're going to have to just replace things due to age regardless of mileage.

POST 20Original post

Nice. I bought a 99 with 45K on it. Mine looked new inside and out. First thing I did was have the IMSB changed out and it also needed a new water pump and A/O separator. Purrs along now. I paid 16K for the car and 3800 for service, so I managed to get in under 20K and had all the work/upgrades I needed done.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

16k?! Wow! How long ago was that? Hmm, and 3,800 for IMS and A/O seems good too. did you do a clutch while the tranny was out? I know NY prices will be considerably higher than MO prices.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 14569904

Couple things: Oil leaks on these cars aren't the biggest deals, but that leak in your first pic is pretty bad. These cars eat oil anyway (says the manual), and a leak like that is going to compound the issue. All it means is watching the levels like a hawk, but still. You sound like a car guy, so you probably have thought about this already, but have you looked at a car outside our area? As you've already noted, the roads around here suck even when they're not covered in salt. For an older car like we're looking at, I always look out west or down south. I bought my 996 out in California last April and drove it home. Best road trip of my life! If you're not into that, shipping in an open container is relatively cheap, and you save the mileage. PLUS, the forums here are a great way to research cars not in our area. Somebody will usually volunteer to take an initial look at a car before you get an inspection done. Good luck, and have fun!

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 14569904

It's a tip. This was just a few months ago, was a steal really. It's my first water cooled Porsche and I really like it so far.

POST 24Original post

For everyone I only had to spend $x on service, there is a someone else who spent >=$2x. Still a good value for the performance, yes. But not as good of a value as you might think. Starting to feel like a broken record, but I bought my car with 19K miles. I've done IMS Solution, RMS, clutch, flywheel, water pump, coolant tank, alternator, battery, shocks, lower link, engine mounts, and I'm probably forgetting some things. I foresee in the near future: AOS, window regulator, brakes, cab top. Was considerably more than the 3800 above and will be even more than that in the future. This is why I say don't be afraid of the miles. Time degrades everything. I'd rather pay less for the car vs paying a premium for low mileage. You could also make the argument at least some of this stuff would have been addressed if the car had more miles.

POST 25Original post

be prepared to drop a pretty penny on some of those massive warning signs. if you aren't worried about that I say go for it.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw another car today. http://vi.vipr.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayI...1&secureDesc=0 Looks really nice in person. Not a fan of the interior color, but what can I do, I'm not ordering the car new. I'm thinking black floor mats and maybe even a black 3 spoke steering wheel would tone down the interior nicely. Pros: drove really well. Records of the big service work done when current owner bought the car a year ago, plus I saw the PPI done a year ago. He addressed everything on the PPI except for the sun visor mirror covers. (Minor oil leak in RMS, window regulator, suggested service) Major work done last year, 1k miles ago was: IMS, RMS, clutch, ALL fluids changed, filters changed, coils and plugs changed. The car drove well. Felt strong. The bad: the front bumper and hood had been repainted in the past and the bumper needs paint again as the center where the plate should be is not great. It once had holes for a plate that someone did a poor job repairing. There are about 2 scratches/door chips on each door that are not bad. The drivers seat needs some reconditioning and cleaning. The front and rear release levers were worn too. I found the bill of sale in the car. The guy paid $22k for it and then put in $6k. So what's it worth now? Closer to 22 or closer to 28k? Asking is $31k. It's heavily optioned as you can see. I love the Aero package, the sport suspension, and THOSE WHEELS ARE GORGEOUS! I like the exterior MUCH more than the first car, but the black interior on the first one is perfect. The first car needs about $4k worth of work (IMS, clutch, AOS), but is all original and unmolested, save for a few marks on the engine lid. But it's pretty plain, except for the LSD Both have 36k miles. So, assuming the first one can be had for $22k+$4k in service, versus the second one at maybe, $26-28k? Which would you choose? I'm not seeing a lot for the $20k mark that people suggest unless they have much more miles and other issues.

POST 27Original post

That 2nd car has been cared for and a lot of work has been done on it. I think that interior will grow on you and the car looks really nice. Money wise I think the 2nd car is the better choice as well. If you try to get the work done, you’ll be shocked on the $$$ spend! Don’t be in a hurry buying a 911, now with winter around the corner many cars will sit until spring. So you should be able to negotiate a bit. Watch this car drive and you know red interiors make you quick!!! :-) You Tube

POST 28Original post

I'd go for the 2nd car as well. It is very similar to the one I bought. I rather like the interior color on it. With the extras, I probably would pay 25K on that one.

POST 29Original post

Wait for the car that checks all your boxes. Its not like the 996 is rare. Keep looking.

POST 30Original post

Aventura Motors is in my neck of the woods you might say (I drive past it every day). What are they asking for the car (ball park is ok...)? I would think given the area (The Hamptons) that they'd be on the high end, but who knows...

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14575932

Sorry, I thought the price was in the ad. They are at $31k on ebay. It was $32k and didn't sell. I'm thinking it should be in the $24-25k range tops.

POST 32Original post

This is the best looking mk.1 996 I have seen for sale. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I were in the market now and didn't buy my car last year. Then again, that is a steep price and I would like to know that I had all the work done myself at a reputable shop.

POST 33Original post

FWIW my 2000 C2 was $27k with 23k miles, no IMS done. The price might be steep, but you have to decide if it's exactly what you want. Color, gearbox, interior, service records, etc. If you're not absolutely in love with it, then might be worth waiting and see what else sprouts up.

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 14575972, 14575994

The mechanic who did the work last year is a Porsche trained tech. I spoke w/him and he said he's shocked it's even for sale. He wouldn't even take my money to do a PPI. Said it's a solid car. That work was done 1 year ago and only 1,000 miles later! if the pic in your icon is your C2, it's NICE! You'll have to send me more pics. I have a call in to the dealership that did the PPI about 13 months ago before this guy bought the car. I have the paperwork and it was a very thorough PPI. Looks like the current owner addressed everything on it reported except for the broken visor mirror covers. It seems this guy goes through cars like most of us go through socks.

Yeah, I figured they'd be on the high end. I haven't seen that car out on the lot (I would have noticed it), it could be inside though... Are you local, or upstate? If it turns out you're interested but can't get out here, I could swing by and look at it for you - start it up and have a listen, maybe take it for a ride. I promise not to "scoop it" on you - I'm fully commited to my car! PM me if you're thinking about making an offer...

POST 37Original post

Sweet! So you're on LI...for some reason I thought you were upstate How'd you like it? Did you make an offer?

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I liked it a lot. I'm debating what to offer. It's on consignment. The owner paid $22k for it just over a year ago, then did at least $4k worth of work, he said $6k. He seems to have addressed everything on the PPI except for a rattle in one muffler that I heard but it wasn't a big deal, and the interior visor covers are broken, and the seats need a good cleaning. But the biggest thing is that the front bumper needs to be repainted. It was done once before to fill old license plate holes, but done poorly.

i have a car in silver over red. That interior will def grow on you, i'm now loving the color (aside from its classic porsche throwback). A black steering wheel, black floormats and you're good to go.

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How/where did you get a black steering wheel? Ideally, I'd like to find a 3 spoke Porsche wheel.

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 14576207

mine came with a black 4 spoke. Yours seems like having some fancy interior options, as my vents are all black as well as the a/c unit.

Fabulous options list. I'd buy it in a heartbeat (not for 30k though).

POST 44Original post

I would definitely be pursuing that car based on the options and information about the tech who worked on it. That is a very special car, but I agree that you should get what you want. For that price, get exactly what you are looking for colour and option wise.

POST 48Original post

Quotes source post: 14576236

totally agree, this one is special based on the options and color combo. That interior is awesome. You figure the previous owner would be satisfied recouping his purchase price and a bit of the maintenance costs so I'd start with 25K - 27K. I certainly don't mind shelling out a bit extra for that "special car" and this one checks those boxes. Just don't expect to resell it in a few years for 30K+.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 14575713

I hope this car sells for around $30k. Nice bump on what I'm asking for mine, but I have higher miles.

POST 50Original post

I'm also in the market for a 911 and I know the early 996 has the robust IMSB but no one ever talks about the VarioCam. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the chain pad needs to be replace after so many miles which requires engine out?

While it's easier to change the variocam solenoids with the motor out, from my understanding it can be done with the motor in.

POST 54 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Without my having to go nuts searching, can you just give me the very short version of this issue? Like warning signs, cost to repair? and BTW, I need to see pics of your red Aero!

POST 55Original post

Quotes source post: 14576207

Black 3 spoke steering wheels are available on ebay all the time. If you shop you can probably get one with airbag for around $500 (not leather though...). You should figure $1k for the front bumper re-finish. If they're asking $31k I think the best you're going to do is $27 - 28K... It really depends on how motivated the seller is. Good luck, I hope it works out for you - beautiful looking car

POST 56Original post

Quotes source post: 14578353

From my basic knowledge;Variocam is basically timing adjustment by adding tension to the chain, when the actuators go bad I'd expect hesitation as RPM's increase and a fault code. I personally haven't looked much into it beyond that. Not positive about pricing, but maybe around $200 for an actuator. If the motor is dropped to do it, might want to count on replacing additional parts that may break.

POST 58 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14578372

What years fit the 996? I see new wheels w/airbag are $1500. ouch.

POST 59Original post

Quotes source post: 14578374

Uh no... actuators are $1k or more if you go for Porsche OE. They can be had for slightly less if you go aftermarket - $750 would be a good price. The good news is, that the actuators themselves rarely go bad - more likely that the electronic solenoid or one of the connections. The solenoids are around $200 each (more if you go with a Porsche branded part). The job is much easier to do with the engine out. Changing the pads/solenoid/actuator is literally like a 20 minute job! All the time/$ is spent cleaning and re-sealing the cam covers - be super careful with the sealant (it's amazing how little you need - they're not kidding when they say 1mm bead) or you'll be taking everything back apart and doing it again (like I had to do).

POST 60Original post

Quotes source post: 14578415

Ahhh gotcha thanks for the clarification. Got the actuator and solenoids mixed up. Did you change yours with the motor in or out?

POST 61 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

bought it! Verbal deal struck. $27k. now I'm nervous.

POST 62Original post

Nice! I think you did fairly well - what are you nervous about? "Ahhh gotcha thanks for the clarification. Got the actuator and solenoids mixed up. Did you change yours with the motor in or out?" I did the pads only, with the motor out. I also did a bunch of other stuff including IMS Solution, clutch, water pump, thermostat etc...certainly worth it to have the engine out and on a stand. Due to the fact that I used too much sealant on the Bank2 cam cover (I got careless I guess) I had to take it back off, clean it all up and re-seal it. I did this with the engine in the car but lowered about 4-6" (maybe a little more). Having done it both ways, I can say with confidence that dropping the motor all the way is definitely worth it if you're going to be splitting the tranny (tranny, clutch, flywheel, IMSB or RMS work) and or working on both sides. If you're just doing one side for whatever reason doing it with the engine in is probably preferable...

POST 63 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Always nervous doing stuff like this. Second guessing, buyer's remorse, I dunno. I would have liked a few grand less, but I really like this car and getting to speak with both the mechanic that did all the recent work (he told me the stock IMS looked great) and then also speaking with the Porsche dealer who did the PPI last year all just nailed it for me, and hopefully, helped justify the sorta high price. This combo of exterior color, Aero, sport suspension and the wheels, to me was sorta rate and really what I wanted. I'll learn to live with the interior. Anyone have a black steering wheel to sell me?

POST 64Original post

Quotes source post: 14578927

The upshot is that it's had a bunch of stuff done that if it hadn't been done, you'd be paying for anyway. In addition, I'm sure you'll be doing more after you drive it for a time - it's just the nature of these cars. As an owner you just NEED to keep tinkering to make it your own and the best it can possibly be!

Clutch, IMS, AOS, etc have all been taken care of about 3k miles ago, was more or less a mild curiosity if it does happen for whatever reason in the future. First rear engine car and opening the trunk vs. a hood can be intimidating, so I'm kind of surprised how DIY these cars are. When do you pick it up? If you're like me you'll lose sleep days prior. It's a good bit of money to spend on a car, but it's worth it in smiles per gallon. Your options list is way healthier than mine, especially the carbon options, so all in all I think you're walking away with a great example of a C2 for what you paid. Enjoy!

Yea, that's exactly what happened! I have embraced the under dog, the red-headed step child. I am going to see if I can get FRIEDEGG on my license plate! I initially saw it on ebay. Auction ended without a sale. I passed on it then because the interior looked tired and, well, not quite red. Plus those fried eggs. But the exterior... and those wheels... I was mesmerized! So I just figured I'd check it out being that I was in that area this week anyway. And here I am! THANKS! And congrats to you as well. I'll check out your thread.
