Suggestion

I usually use the dash gauge to check my oil level after getting gas, so i guess the only change i would need to do to calibrate would be to turn the key back to the off position for 10 seconds before starting the car

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been driving my 996 C4S now for about 10k miles, and it has this very intermittent hesitation/throttle pulse that seems linked to potentially the clutch or drive-train. Its hard to describe - when driving with steady state throttle, the car feels as though its either pulsing slightly with increased throttle, or its hesitating slightly as though the clutch is possibly slipping even though there's no load other than cruising. I've had great results with oil samples recently so don't think there's any internal issue at play. Wonder if maybe its a clutch issue or something else - curious if anyone else has had this experience. Car only has 42k miles on it, with regular service performed its entire life.

POST 2Original post

Is it at a certain RPM range? I notice a pulse/hesitation at about 3200 RPM when the vario cam solenoid activates if I am slightly on the throttle

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that's about where it occurs - somewhere around 3k rpm. Is it possible to smooth it out? Will a tuning program resolve it?

POST 4Original post

interesting. i've been noticing the same. As a new (OCD) owner of an '03 c4s, I've been steady at work being overly paranoid about, well... everything. car seems super solid save a slight intermittent hesitation at speed under load, it's very slight and usually only when i apply throttle. i was thinking a loose cable but i know this car is a couple years too new to have that potential issue. interested to learn more about the variocam solenoid.

POST 5Original post

Turn off the AC and see if the problem disappears.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 14584011

Not sure about the OP, but I've only had the car for 2 months and never used the AC. And I know what your talking about, but this isn't a drain on the alternator kind of thing.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 14584372

The alternator drain is not what I am targeting. When the AC compressor engages, it causes a small stutter in the drive train, at least on my car. When I turn off the AC, the problem goes away. By he way, anytime the climate control is engaged by pressing Auto, then the AC is engaged. On cold days, the clutch cycles more. This is when I feel the hesitation.

POST 8Original post

Poke around and check on your fuel pump's health. I had similar hesitation that started around 3K rpm, would eventually resolve itself up through ~4k, and then felt like nothing to give above that. Ie, I'd get on it, car would hesitate around 3k rpm, seem to recover up through 4k, and then just wallow along without any real power behind it. Through all of this car, car started strong, just ran as if it was limping along. Had a couple error codes related to mixture being lean, so focused on cleaning MAF, trying to run without it, etc. That got me nowhere. Ultimately, over the course of a few days, car stopped starting altogether (thankfully in my garage). Turned out to be gummed up fuel pump/filter that ultimately had to be replaced. Not sure if it had been steadily degrading over time and just took until that point to manifest itself, or if I got a batch of REALLY bad gas. Shop said filter was essentially clogged with sludgy sediment. I thought similar things to what you're thinking when it first started happening, including that maybe clutch was slipping at that particular rpm range/load, which is the only reason I bring it up. Hopefully I'm not introducing a red herring to the mix, but thought I'd offer it up just in case it would help. Good luck.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 14583861

Clutch slip - at least early clutch slip - shouldn't be happening unless you're accelerating. Fuel delivery, air metering, and vacuum leaks (unmetered air) would be the things I'd poke at if the car's performance/idle changes without inputs from you. I could also imagine a similar feeling if you accelerate gradually through the Variocam transition/actuation point...

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 14583861

You have received some good replies/suggestions. I can only add that you try an E-Gas calibration. Takes only a minute+ and costs nothing. The exact procedure should be in the owners manual. For my 2002 Boxster and 2003 Turbo the steps are: With your foot off the gas pedal through the entire procedure and with the ignition key off turn the ignition key to the on position. Leave on for at least 60 seconds. Turn the key off for at least 10 seconds. The next time the engine is started the calibration is complete. This E-Gas calibration should be done every so often. I try to remember to do it shortly after I get my cars back from a 5K mile oil service. But if the electrical power is lost at the car due to a dead battery or replacing a weak one it should be done as part of post battery replacement.

POST 11Original post

interesting reply on the E-gas calibration I usually use the dash gauge to check my oil level after getting gas, so i guess the only change i would need to do to calibrate would be to turn the key back to the off position for 10 seconds before starting the car good to know - thanks

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll try the e-gas suggestion. This seems to be more consistent with the variocam issue mentioned. Its consistent at the same point in RPM and since that's about where I cruise on highways - right at 3200rpm in 6th gear, it seems to occur often. Outside of this its not an issue. AC on/off isn't a factor.

POST 13Original post

Based on your additional comments, I'll bet a dollar that the feeling is VarioCam-related. You're ONLY having the issue when you're cruising in 6th...at the VarioCam changeover RPM range. I have no idea if this can be monitored in real-time (or at least datalogged). Maybe Durametric actual values - I don't have my Durametric machine with me to check.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not just in 6th gear - it'll happen in all gears under light load/cruising, just happens to be at that rpm - around 3200. Under heavy load when I mash the pedal, you won't notice it.

POST 15Original post

If it makes you feel any better I'm in the exact same boat. It's exactly as you describe. I agree of all comments the variocam sounds most logical. I plan to research this more as time permits and report back.
