After reading the factory alignment specs, (albeit in degrees), it appears that the 996 is using positive toe (toe out in the rear)...?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm setting the alignment on a track day oriented 996 after install of new links, control arms, bars and coilovers using a the string method to set the toe. Ride height is sane (as I may drive it to the event) with a 3/8+ rear rake. Camber settings are: -2.0 front with 7mm shims -2.25 rear (maxed out oem control arm) I'm having trouble with the toe settings, as these seem to be listed in degrees and not inches/mm's. Right now I'm at zero front toe and 1/16 toe out rear. It doesn't track out as well as I think it should.( I haven't adjusted the caster yet... it's currently at 5/5.2) Does anyone have baseline alignment specs that are in inches/mm? Thank you!

POST 2Original post

https://robrobinette.com/ConvertToeDegreesToInches.htm I am thinking you want the rear at zero or slightly toe in.

POST 3Original post

Cannot find it, but these will help because a lot depends on your suspension and wheel diameter: https://www.renntech.org/forums/topi...ts#comment-559 Convert degrees to inches https://robrobinette.com/ConvertToeDegreesToInches.htm

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Joe/Nick: Thank you for your links. Nick, I'm glad you brought the rear toe-out... what's up with that? After reading the factory alignment specs, (albeit in degrees), it appears that the 996 is using positive toe (toe out in the rear)...? In my past experience (with other types of cars) this would promote evil oversteer. Am I reading this right? Or, are the specs from a gt-3 that has some kind of active rear track adjustment? From what I get out of the factory 996 alignment spec sheet, it looks like the rear toe setting of: +10' toe would be about 1/32" toe out per tire.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK. I've got some clarification from a Porsche shop. With regard to the rear toe setting... Apparently, a + 10' setting (angular) is Toe IN; not toe out. So, this makes sense now. A Starting recommendation for a 996 track day alignment seems to be: Front: zero toe to 1/16" toe in. Rear: 1/18" toe in. You should have .25 - .5 degrees more negative camber in the rear than in the front. I'll do it and get back.

POST 6Original post

18 inch wheels at least 0.10 inches on each side toe in

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also, Tarett got back to me with their starting recommendations for HPDE/Track day settings: Front: -2.5 camber, zero toe. Rear: -2.25 camber, 6-8mm total toe in (which is about 1/4"+).

POST 8Original post

Front toe will depend on track length and speed. On a tight small course up to 1/4" toe out will be great for quick turn in. The higher the speed and the larger the corners the less the toe out. 0 toe is a good starting point (lol, I run 0 front toe on all my street cars) Rear toe is always in, amount is subjective. More is better with the stock links. If you have adjusted the rear toe you will realized how garbage the stock rear toe link setup is. Hopefully you have aftermarket and can be more precise and run tighter settings I started with strings then went to a Smart racing camber tool with Longacre toe plates and marked centerlines on the car. Car was much better. Finally bought a full on Hunter alignment machine and the car was transformed. Driving a car that is not all scrubbed up is a joy and there are far to few out there.
