Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But the real question is what technology was used for cylinders, and pistons?
Leading evidence: 'Use cylinders, and pistons' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use cylinders, and pistons' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No affiliation with the Indy, other than that I bought a set of hollow spokes from the shop a few months ago. Had no prior knowledge of the shop other than that they appeared to be a european car indy, and when I showed up to get the wheels I was greeted with a shop full of air and water cooled Porsches. Good stuff.
Anyways, spent a few minutes talking with the owner, there was a 996 C4S on a lift with a blown engine, so we did the usual talk about IMSB, etc, etc. Then, I noticed an M96 on a crate in the corner of the shop; turns out he was building a 3.8 with a spare motor he acquired through a customer.
I don't know the details of the build, other than it has Nickies. 12k seems like a good deal to me, but again, I also don't know the details of the engine, rebuild, etc, so who knows:

Somebody please jump on this before I start entertaining crazy thoughts!
The crazy side of me says I could sell my 2004 38k mile engine with IMS/RMS done for good money, swap the 3.8L motor in, and not be out very much money at all. Very cheap way to get into a 3.8.
Thankfully what little self restraint I have kicks in when I start thinking motor swaps
Well, I recently got a build quote for my 3.4 to 4.0 with nickies, Cnc head work and all that for 22k. The parts list was 12k, so...I guess if the work was done well then it could be a very good buy. Since it's not my money, go for it!!

But the real question is what technology was used for cylinders, and pistons? Head work that was carried out?
Stock 3.2 Boxster S heads won't feed a 101mm bore without creating inefficiency.
As more and more people start trying to build these engines bigger, all I see are misconfigurations being created. Thats ok if you are willing to accept compromise, and a lot of it.
Assume it was a 3.6>3.8 conversion? So would not go into a 3.4 without issues.
Seems cheap based on the costs I'm about to see for Nikasil liners and pistons from LN for my 3.4, so more details required.
I have no intention of swapping my motor out, but ill prob poke my head into the shop the next time in the neighborhood, as I'd be interested in hearing what all was done during the rebuild.
The engine pictured in their ad is a 5 chain... that makes it a 3.4, not a 3.6 as all 3.6 engines are 3 chains. To go from the 3.4 96mm bore to a 3.8 requires a 101mm bore.
My guess is it has steel sleeves, aka "steel clunkers". I have nothing good to say about those, except they do stimulate our economy here. Too bad that they compromise the entire block once they are installed, though.
When I looked through the ad all i saw was the 3.2 engine, not the 3.6l. It was a dual ad for two different engines. Or did I look through too quickly and they showed both?
