Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I want to remove the panel by the seat, just inside the sill plate, that has the front & rear lid release switches.. I know there has been a thread on this but I couldn't find it. Can someone tell me the proper technique so I don't break something in the process? TIA!

POST 2Original post

Pull the seat, there r 3 holes in the side of the plastic. Use a longish 6mm (i think) allen to loosen the bolts, do not remove just loosen. Then lift the piece up with a little force as it still has a couple clips holding it in.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see two plastic buttons in the side (not three). Are the allen screws behind those? Just pry the the buttons out to access? It looks like I should be able to do this with the seat in place from looking at mine. 2004 996.2

POST 4Original post

I did mine 996.2 without removing the seat. The carpeting tends to cover the allen socket cap hole and you may have to fish around a bit to insert the tool.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, I get it. I need to look further down the rocker to find the holes for the screws. I was looking for something through the side of the switch cover plate. Thanks!!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a wrap up in hopes it helps others. My car had two of the black plugs in the plastic piece, not three. I was able to remove them by pushing from behind with a plastic trim tool. I wanted to remove this piece without removing the seat, which is the "normal" way to approach it. I bought a 3-1/2" long T30 bit and ended up cutting it down to 2-1/8" long. This allowed me to loosen both screws with the seat installed. Bentley says to turn the screws 6 turns only, which I did. What Bentley doesn't show you is what you are actually doing under the trim piece, so below is a photo with it removed showing that the two screws basically clamp the trim piece for extra security over the snap in retainers.
