The most practical use would be just as described to test engine oil pressure, but you could certainly use the port for a higher precision sender and a more accurate/precision aftermarket gauge.

You can remove the sending unit to test pressure "or" the plug that is on the other head , in the opposite position from the sending unit

Sometimes the dash gauge does not read a normal value, when this happens it is usually the sender, but if this doesn't fix it, next thing should be an accurate oil pressure test using a manual gauge.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A lot of people here in this forum worry about oil pressure (as they should). Most of the time the oil pressure is fine and is working normal as designed for an M96 engine eg. the gauge goes to 5 bar on cold start , and at hot idle is about 1 bar, with hot cruise being about 1 bar per 1k rpm.
Sometimes the dash gauge does not read a normal value, when this happens it is usually the sender, but if this doesn't fix it, next thing should be an accurate oil pressure test using a manual gauge.
It doesn't take a high dollar Snap-On tester, any manual oil pressure tester will be within a few psi of accurate, some can be got very cheap like this one.

Just remove the plug ( #17 in diagram below ) on bank 1 cover (6mm Allen ) and screw in a 14mm x 1.5mm adapter, and plug on the gauge and start the engine and observe an accurate pressure reading . If all is well then you know the dash unit is failing.
To access the plug you will need to remove the secondary air pump, then weave though the various hoses to see the plug. On my 1999 C2 I also had to remove the fuel line as it was in the way of a straight shot down to the plug. (17mm open end wrench).
Oil Pressure reading at the head on my 1999 C2 with 130K miles and 5w-50 weight oil.
Cold start = 92psi
Warm idle = 20psi a/c on ---18psi a/c off
Warm engine at 4k rpm = 68psi
These pressures should be typical.
#17 is the plug #16 is the crush washer Note location

Thanks, @Porschetech, very useful info. Would this be a good place to put a more accurate sensor wired to a non-OEM gauge? Or better to just attach second analog gauge in parallel to OEM sender?
You can do what ever you want with it, the pressures here will be very very close to what is seen by the factory OP sender location. ( on the opposite head)..
The most practical use would be just as described to test engine oil pressure, but you could certainly use the port for a higher precision sender and a more accurate/precision aftermarket gauge.

Hey PorscheTech, two quick questions:
1. Do you have a link to where I can buy a manual pressure gauge to check this?
2. When you say remove the plug in the diagram, you mean the pressure sender unit? That's what it looks like in the diagram.
Thanks so much!
I don't have a link but there are plenty of pressure gauges on Amazon in all price ranges....
You can remove the sending unit to test pressure "or" the plug that is on the other head , in the opposite position from the sending unit
Thanks for the info
@Porschetech3
- got a mechanical gauge kit off Amazon and checked it today.
Good news is its reading 5 bar on the dot at cold. Dumb question is, what do I do next since the gauge in the car is still showing 3?
thanks!
Since you have a new sender....
Remove the wires from the sender and ground them to the engine one at a time....
One wire when grounded will make the red oil light come on..
The other will make the gauge go in to 5 bar ( if it is able) ..if it can only go to 3 bar the dash gauge is faulty
Thanks Tech. Stupid follow up: when you say ground one cable to the engine, you mean just touch that cable to a metallic part of the engine? Also Im assuming the engine needs to be on for the gauge to actually register anything.
When grounding one wire, should the other stay connected to the sender?
Ignition on but engine not running
Re wires:
Remove the wires from the sender and ground them to the engine one at a time....
But you can probably do it the way you asked too.
