Having separate keys leads me to believe that the ignition was replaced, hence the different keys.

Using the PT3 supplied photo (post #11) I lined up the good pill with the second 9 in the part number and used rtv gasket maker to adhere it to the ignition switch surround.

Options Ive been suggested are; 1) new key/fob from Germany programmed at dealer $$$$$, 2) order fob and blade from online parts supplier, local locksmith to cut key, dealer (if they will) program $$$$, 3) eBay used key/fob, new blade & cut, find shop with piwis to program $$$ or, 4) ship key/fob, immobilizer & ecu to ecudoctors in Florida $$$$.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is my Ocean Blue Metallic Cabriolet. It came with 2 keys/fobs, one that unlocks the door (and center console) and a different cut key for the ignition. The rfid pill in the ignition key works to start the car, the pill in the door key does not. There is one mini-motherboard for the remote lock/unlock that doesnt work. The other motherboard is missing. I did try a new battery, the reverse battery reset, and the door lock reprogram tricks to no avail. The mini led does not work so assuming the remote motherboard is dead. I was told that the 996 originally came with 2 copies of a single key that unlocked everything and started the car, each with a remote to lock/unlock the car and a service/valet key without the remote but could start the car. Having separate keys leads me to believe that the ignition was replaced, hence the different keys. Heres what I dont know; -my local dealer may or may not provide me the factory code needed to program or if there is an alternative to getting the code -if the dealer (or shop with piwis) can program a used rfid pill that comes with a used fob -if the remote mini-motherboard that comes with a new OR used fob can be programmed without a piwis Im wanting more than one key to start the car (preferably with a second programmed rfid pill) and at least one fob that will remotely lock/unlock the car. I did have a local locksmith cut me a new door and ignition key so I have a spare for each. The spare ignition key does not have a rfid pill. Is it possible to just get a spare pill for that spare? Thanks for any input!

POST 2Original post

Talk to your local independent automotive locksmith about getting an RFID pill for your spare key. They should be able to get the factory code needed to program it. Im not sure if a used RFID pill can be programmed to your car. It probably can, but a new one is very inexpensive. The remote mini-motherboard needs PIWIS to successfully program into your car. Dont get a used fob, UNLESS it comes with the 24-digit identification code. This code is absolutely necessary to successfully pair the fob to your car. Really though, it makes more financial sense for you to buy a new key - fob and all - and have a local locksmith get it all set up for you.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In my search for knowledge on the remote capabilities, I found a couple tricks from Porsche that can help with problematic fobs: The Remote control's computer chip has frozen or crashed. Porsche was initially swamped with warranty replacements of the key remotes. They issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) explaining how to reset a remote control which had crashed or frozen: Remove the battery from the key remote Insert the battery the wrong way round, flip it, so the writing is facing the other way. Do not worry, this will not damage the remote. Press the unlock button continuously for sixty seconds. Flip the battery back around the right way. Try the remote control again. If this works you can be sure that the remote had crashed/frozen and you successfully reset it. The Remote control has become out of sync with the alarm control unit. The process to re-sync the remote key head is as follows: Put the key manually into the door lock. It does not matter if it is already locked or unlocked. Press the lock/unlock button on the fob and hold it in. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position one last time. Let go of the lock/unlock button. Press and hold in the lock/unlock button again. Turn the key to the unlock position and back the middle position five times and return the the middle position again. Let go of the lock/unlock button. Press the lock/unlock button in again and hold it in. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position again. Take the key out of the door lock and try the buttons. If this works you can be sure that the remote was out of sync and you successfully reset it.

#1 and most importantly, that is not Ocean Blue Metallic More like Iris or one of the many other blues that are/were available No comment on the key fob issue, as it seems youve already gotten plenty of advice good luck!

Damn! Okay, next guess is Cobalt Blue Metallic (found in a 2014 listing for this car online). The build decal is gone. I am hoping to find someone that can run the VIN and get me some of this data. Thx!

Ha! Well, its beautiful regardless of the name! You should be able to get a build sheet with your VIN# this will tell you the actual color/paint code

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Stopped by Porsche of Albuquerque today. They can order just a new fob for $765.19 ($710.98 + $54.21 tax) and have it in a week and a half. They charge $235.59 ($220 + $15.59 tax) to program it. They could not find the key blade to order, which is fine because it is VIN based and would arrive cut the the original ignition switch (which would be useless since my ignition isn’t the original) and take longer to get because it come from the HQ in Germany. So, I’m looking at $1000.68 for a bladeless fob from the dealer. On to other options…

POST 8Original post

For what it’s worth, if you pull back the left-side trunk carpet (as to release the headlight) you should find the paint code sticker there.

POST 10Original post

@Porschetech3 Came up with an interesting and cheap solution to the "pill" problem. He removed the pill from the working fob and glued it to the inside of the removable ignition lock cover. That way both of your keys will be able to start the car without needing expensive reprogramming by a dealer. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...spare-key.html

Thank you for this! I have scoured the forum for this information and even dm’ed PT3! I must have missed it because I was looking for “key fob” and not “spare key”. This one photo is the key!!!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, so it was 60 and sunny today so I did a bunch of minor things to the cabriolet. I removed the dead pill out of the door key and taped it to my maintenance log book (just in case). Using the PT3 supplied photo (post #11) I lined up the good pill with the second 9 in the part number and used rtv gasket maker to adhere it to the ignition switch surround. Both keys (original and VW style copy) start it right up. Total cost was about $45 with $40 for the key at a local locksmith and $5 for the rtv. Happy for now! On to getting a remote motherboard so I can remotely unlock/lock the doors

POST 13Original post

But the big question is Did you find your paint code?
