I ordered a replacement and relied on the compatibility chart that said it was the right one, but as you can see in the pic, there are some significant differences.

Not to jinx myself, but I love working on the 996, so far all jobs (basic level stuff, belt, spark plugs/coils, oil change, clean radiator's etc) has been so easy.

First time to remove/replace the starter on my 2002 C2. I ordered a replacement and relied on the compatibility chart that said it was the right one, but as you can see in the pic, there are some significant differences. Can anyone tell me whether these are compatible (i.e., can I use the one on the left as a replacement for the one on the right)? Spline is longer, although teeth seem to overlap, and solenoid is in different location. Still work?

I wouldn't think so. They are totally different looking to each other. I would get in touch with the firm who sold you the replacement showing them the 2 photos. If you try the new one and it ruins the spline (I think referred to as the 'bendix') then you will not be able to return it for a refund.

Yup, wrong part and it's a known database error. The correct one is Bosch SR0808N, which looks idenrical to the one on the right.

Actually one of the easier replacements. Take off the air filter and the front intake plenum and you have enough room (with an assortment of extensions and swivel joints) to get the starter out.

It actually is a pretty easy replacement, as long as you have an extension (or extensions) for your socket to reach all the way back there.

Not to jinx myself, but I love working on the 996, so far all jobs (basic level stuff, belt, spark plugs/coils, oil change, clean radiator's etc) has been so easy. My MB, BMW, and all Audi's have been a pita due to tight engine bays and such. Just did oil, spark plugs and filters on my b6 s4 and that was a tight squeeze. Just getting the air box out took 20 minutes or so.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
