My second choice was using a 3M Scotchlok connector to do as little damage as possible to the harness and still allow the car to easily go back to the factory wheel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently purchased a custom leather wrapped wheel to spice up my interior. I do not want to live with the airbag light on, so what is the easiest way to bypass the light?

POST 2Original post

resistor into the plug. Mine came with a resistor so I don't know the specs on it

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 13943823

Hmmm. Can you share how you did that on a 996? Mk2's I don't think you can.

POST 5Original post

A piece of black duct tape over the light is the easiest way to deal with it.

POST 6Original post

Search found this: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...-jumper-4.html Wired in a 2.8 ohm resistor to the airbag connector

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13944054

Now I just have to find a resistor. These do not seem easy to find, but I will continue to search. Thanks for the specs, though!

POST 8Original post

I was able to buy a damaged clock-spring and use the connector to wire in my resistor without having to splice into the harness on the chassis. I would advise you do this if at all possible. My second choice was using a 3M Scotchlok connector to do as little damage as possible to the harness and still allow the car to easily go back to the factory wheel. As for the resistor, just go to eBay and search for airbag resistor or SRS resistor.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am not experienced with this, so you were able to really help me realize what I have to do here. I am definitely not comfortable splicing into the harness on the chassis. I will certainly be looking into your options. I had no idea an aftermarket wheel would be this difficult!

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13944400

RE: tape recommendation, if you ever sell the car would you prefer to remove the tape or redo the wiring (again)? I really like those wheels and if the OEM unit wasn't so comfortable for me I'd seriously consider the mod. But don't overthink it. Keep your wiring in OEM shape and just swap back the OEM wheel if you ever need to. GL & enjoy

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 13943871

just remove the guage cluster (there's a diy on pelican) and the lamps for all the trouble lights are accessible from the back (on a 996.1; not sure about the 996.2 - i had a look at some images and the .2 might be different).

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13944696

You have convinced me! I will use tape, because I will definitely want my car stock again some day. And you're right, the OEM wheel is perfect (even my 4 spoke).

POST 14Original post

If you get the plug from a used clock-spring you won't have to splice anything, just unplug the plug with the resistor on it and plug in the factory clock spring. BTW, if you do just cover it with tape, despite the light being on, all the other airbags will still function.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 13943937

Exactly what I did when my CEL came on.

POST 16Original post

If you use the resistor, the light will tell you if other problems arise. If you tape over the light and the passenger airbag develops an issue and you don't know until after it doesn't deploy...well...that would suck.

POST 17Original post

i think if a person is making the conscious decision to remove the airbag in their car, then they are comfortable w a non-functioning airbag system.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13947789

"Spice up the interior" and "gut for track use" aren't the same thing...but yes, OP will be the one to decide if passenger airbags are a necessity. If so, hopefully he'd go the resistor route and leave the airbag light visible. OP, no matter what you do, be sure to disconnect the battery while you're doing it. Disconnecting airbags while the battery is connected can trigger the light.

POST 19Original post

Twitchett... Not sure if this applies to your install (996?) but a couple of years ago I installed a Momo steering wheel on my 997.2 C2S. You may need to add an aftermarket steering wheel hub to get the new wheel to fit. On my car, underneath the airbag is a molded clear plastic piece (manufactured by Audi btw) that I had to modify slightly (with box cutters) in order to get the hub on and aligned correctly. I believe if you search this forum someone did a very nice job summarizing the process with text and pictures.

POST 20Original post

You should be able to get a resistors from princess auto or even crappy tire. If not we use an electrical wholesaler so would be able to help out.
