Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

From that I"ve read, it's second only to the factory shop manual. Seems to be the one to have, although I don't yet have one myself. There are a bunch of places you can find the factory manual in PDF form as well, which is what I have presently, but have to admit, I still prefer a "hold in hand" hard copy manual. Printing the factory one is just not practical as it's multiple volumes and thousands of pages.
The Bentley manuals area condensed version of the factory manuals. Pretty much the same info ina afar easier reading format.
They are not as complete, but do cover most DIY stuff
I bought the one for my Boxster for around $50 used
But is it better than google?
I have the full factory manuals. They are a pain. Probably should get the Bentley, too, and then I can have a full shelf of 996 books...
It's a good book, but I recall it being hit-or-miss sometimes with details like torque values. At least one covered procedure required supplemental Googling to find the necessary info.
The problem with the FSM is getting the updates.
Many of the paper or CD or downloads are from the mid-90's with just a few of the scores of subsequent updates. Bentley will not include any such update info after it was published.

I have it and like it - extremely useful for most basic and in depth tasks - however, it is VERY incorrect about the cam timing procedure for a 3.6L engine. The Porsche factory manual is the best source for that. They're so completely different, I can't believe they printed whatever non-sense they did for that section.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
