Does that hurt the cooling of the engine and do you have to disconnect the original spoiler mechanism

Not something I would do though when we had my whole car apart in the shop I was considering moving over to MK2 headlights to make room for the turbo exchangers but I do like the kidney bean headlights so we Dundon created custom brackets to make the original headlights work....I would have considered your approach if I had to use Mk2 headlights.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I picked up a used Mk1 Aerokit Taco wing and just got it back from the paint shop on Friday.
My car already had the Mk2 Aerokit front bumper that the previous owner had installed.
I really prefer the earlier Taco wing.
Agree....Looks great but you need side skirts and you are set. Oh and then some GT3 wheels, lowering springs, spacers, new exhaust, an engine upgrade, depo taillights, cage, seats, …..when does it stop
You make an interesting point. For my 09 997 C4S I would never consider doing any of this stuff to it (keep it stock to your point) because it would upset the lines of wide rear end and the big hips the 997 captures so well. For the 996, I feel it needs a little something and I can't imagine any of it without it. My car came new with Aero, which was why I fell in love with it. Frankly, the aero makes the car my favorite in the stable where otherwise it would be my lease favorite (though I still like it in is base form as shown below but not at the top of the list.) Lets at least agree to one thing....once you go down the Aero path, you do need to do the complete deal....otherwise it looks incomplete.
Taco wings are a piece of art and look great on the back of a narrow body 996 really adds character to the design, my opinion is in time they will be thought of the way the original 911 Ducktail is thought of. if anyone agrees I have a spare taco wing for sale on this Forum.
Rich
Yes it is seal grey.
I’ve been trying to decide about whether to add side skirts or not.
They're the cheapest part of the Aerokit at just $670 from Porsche.
But they are not easily reversible.
I thought the car might look funny without them, but I think it looks ok.
But it probably would look even better with them.
I know that the 996.2 didn’t come with Tacos, but I figured if people could get away with adding ducktails to newer 911s that a taco on a .2 might be accepted.
I got negative comments recently about the headlight covers from someone who said I “should have left it like Porsche made it.”
I changed the subject to Magnus Walkers and Singer and was told by the same person that he “love(s) what they do with aircooled Porsches. Magnus makes what Porsche should have done.”
But my 996 was “ugly with and without the covers.”
He said I should have bought a 991. meh...
The side skirts are very easily reversible? Its all bolt on and some tape.
Not a fan of mixing and matching MK 1 and MK2 parts but your car does look good, props on making it your own too.
I dont see how the side skirts are irreversable. Can you say a little more? From what I can see on my 2002, they seem like something easily added or removed.
Correct, bolts and tape nothing else. Remove the rear guard bits - install new skirt - remove if you feel like it!
Question is, will you go MK1 or MK2 side skirts if you decide to get a pair??
Front and rear bumper lines scream out for the more angular mk II skirts to carry that body line.
I like the rounder MK I style better, but you need the right bumpers to carry it.
My 2002 has the MK I and they just look out of place to me.
I thought they had self taping screws to hold on a metal strip.
If it can be easily reversed, they Ill probably get them.
Id go Mk2.
I prefer the Mk2 bumper and sideskirts, but the Mk1 wing.
The Mk1 taco wing is a real piece of art.
The Mk2 and later wings are probably more effective as wings.
I am totally OK with mixing MK1 and 2, however,...
If you have an MK2 front bumper....go with MK2 sideskirts. MK2 rear bumper I think works well with both MK1 Aero and MK2 areo equally. I think regular MK1 rear bumper doesn't work for me....too bland and jelly beanish.
BTW....I think your headlight covers look great....completely changes the look of the car.
Bottom line, make your car your own...
Wow what forum are you in? That wing was introduced back in 1999 way before the Honda crowd...Best wing ever and looks good on the 996.2 Been thinking of getting a 996.2 rear bumper and adding it to my 996.1 with the rear flaps as well. The 996.2 real bumper just looks smoother than the 996.1
How many small styling cues sway our attraction to these fine motor vehicles?
Coming from a mk2'er I'm not much for Aero with it's different iterations though sometimes I kind of get "it".
Headlight covers work well at times, what's the harm?
Front spoilers...yeah.
Sideskirts....Mk2 only. Mk1's too roundish/awkward.
Tacos...well to each their own.
Euro rear bumpers with no bumperettes...mmmmm.
We make'm how we like'm and it's all good but I'm drawing a line
in the sand saying......NO SPATS.
OK, once I have the suspension done, I'll start thinking about picking up the side skirts.
I've had the coil overs for a couple of months now.
They came 2 days before my chemo treatments started.
I've been dying to install them, but I still get tired easily.
I ordered a few more suspension components today (adjustable drop links and adjustable rear toe arms) so maybe in the next month or so I'll have a new suspension installed.
Hey Tex Squirrel...wishing you a speedy recovery....
Can't wait to see your car once you install the skirts...it already looks great but will even look better!
Well I've been hesitant to install side skirts on my car, because the MkI Aerokit instructions showed a metal bar that was attached to the side of the car with self taping screws.
That in my mind made the modification non-reversible...or at least not easily reversible.
Well I just got 2 brand new genuine Porsche MKII Aerokit side skirts and they attach on the side with an adhesive strip.
That's pretty easily reversible.
I'm glad I got them now.
There are some bolts which attach underneath.
My car will be heading to the body shop in about a week and a half and should have a full Aerokit when I get it back.
I'm excited!
Your car will now be complete! Can't wait to see it.
In my humble, humble opinion, I'd remove the those headlight masks. The GT3 Aero kit cars are some of the best looking cars that left the factory in my view.
I think your car will look awesome with those skirts! Please post a pic. And while I tend to agree with Nutty about liking 996 headlights....I think your treatment is very tastefully done and I do like that too. It makes your car unique and you can call it your own. Its actually pretty cool.
The body shop that painted my Taco, also painted my side skirts last Saturday.
I dropped off my 996 early this morning and they installed them for me.
I spent the day working on a Honda Odyssey.
When I finished I caught a ride to pick up my 996.
I really like the full Aerokit look!
I had planned on getting some photos with the standard non-headlight covered headlights, but I didn't get a chance to swap them out and go get some photos.
I will for sure Matt. I love the rears. Huge deep lip on em. Rides great in the canyons but LA roads arent the best and Im thinking 18s may be better, especially with my M030 suspension.
Rennlist is funny
@TexSquirrel
I started at the beginning of your thread from 2018 and found random pics of my new aerokit. trying to find out if it was
@uscarrera
or just some pics he found.
I spent a total of $2213 for everything in 2018.
Deck/Taco, shipping, paint, seals, bumpers, fan, stickers, latch, bolts, wiring harness, etc.
If you're spending $2300 for everthing, and it is a factory Taco, then you've found a GREAT deal.
If it is for everything and it is a MAshaw, then you've found a good deal.
If is it a Duraflex for $2300, then you found a fair deal.
The Duraflex and the MAShaw will need some quality body work before it is ready to be painted, unless that work has already been done.(Which was the case with mine)
Here's a break down on mine from 2018:
I paid $1160 for mine used shipped from CA to TX.
It is from MAShaw. (Not a factory one, but almost no one can tell)
The bodywork finishing was done and it was already painted midnight blue.
It didnt come with the harness.
I bought the harness from Suncoast, but you can buy the cheaper standard harness and re-pin it.(or re-use your existing harness)
But I didnt have the time to deal with it and decided to get the premade Porsche harness.
It cost me $500 to have the deck and wing sanded and painted to match.(Seal Grey)
I also bought new rubber bumpers, latch, bolts, and a used fan.
This way I can easily swap back to the standard deck lid.
But at this time I cant imagine going back.
Ive stored it away safely in my attic just in case.
Although I could sell it for around $300, but then I couldnt easily get another in perfect shape like mine.
The body shop installed it for me for free.

Alternative is wait for someone with OEM willing to sell. Even the non-taco OEM spoiler on Suncoast is $6k+ which doesn't include paint.
If you want factory OEM taco, it seems like a game of luck waiting for a second hand to go up for sale.
Nope, not OEM.
If it is a decent body shop, and the price is for everything, then it might be a pretty good deal.
They are risking the addition labor that will be required to make it fit.
Make sure the price is firm!
I’ve seen Vis fiberglass hoods and the body shop REALLY makes the difference.
They will most likely move the fan, harness, bumps, seal, and latch over to it.
You’ll get a warning light when you drive with it.
The car won’t like not being able to raise the missing spoiler.
For the 996, you can’t code it out like a 997. (I offer this service to people in the Houston area)
You’ll either have to modify your wiring harness, or buy the expensive one from Porsche.
If the body shop isn’t a good one, it won’t look like a factory one.
The body shop does matter!
Quality wise IMHO:
1) Factory
2) Jacquemond
3) MAShaw
4) Vis
5) Duraflex
A great body shop can make 2, 3, and 4 look like a factory piece.
4 is a lot harder than 2 and 3.
In my opinion, the body shop would save a lot of labor if they sourced this one instead:

This is what I have.
It needs some work to look nice, but not as much as Vis or Duraflex.
I did a LOT of research before I bought mine.
If I buy a 996.2 GT3 wing, I‘ll probably go with MAShaw or Jacquemond.

I think it looks great the way it is. Its not an aero car, its a hot rod 996. Very Cool in a different way. You could always add later so I wouldnt rush to change. Sounds like you love it. Stick with the gut. Usually right.
I’ve been thinking about adding a Gurney flap (#8 below) to my Taco, and then saw #7 below.
What is #7?
They’re calling it a „spoiler mounding.“
Anyone know what it is?
awesome taco wing, I also have a Mirage Metallic 2000 996, question by putting the wing on I notice the car no longer has the vents. Does that hurt the cooling of the engine and do you have to disconnect the original spoiler mechanism
I never had any cooling issues.
My taco is now bubble wrapped and stored in my attic.
I now have the 996.2 Aerokit deck with carbon fiber GT3RS wing on my 996.2.
….and I heeded advice and added 996.2 side skirts.
