Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Apologies in advance for starting a new thread on this but when I search I can never find the posts related to 996 spare keys. Ive read a lot of threads on this topic and am still looking for a definitive answer on spare keys from this Uk company. I bought their $60 key with transponder chip. It opens the doors and turns the ignition but wont start the car. My Indy says it needs an 18 digit code that needs to be programmed into the immobilizer. Has anyone successfully gotten the Keys in the Post key with transponder chip to start their car? if so what is the secret? Do you need a code or not? All my key has is a little set of numbers embossed on the plastic key frame.

POST 2Original post

I'll start, although I haven't done it myself. It definitely needs programmed with the immobilizer, by someone with a PIWIS computer (very expensive Porsche computer, probably will be a dealer). The trick seems to be finding a dealer that will even attempt to program an outside purchased (Internet bought) key. My understanding is that most won't try. They would rather sell you their $500 key.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. My Indy has the computer and willing to do it but tells me he needs an 18 digit code. I sent an email to Keys in the Post asking them for clarification and will update the thread if I learn anything.

POST 4Original post

Do you have a key that works?? If you do, you can take the "pill/transponder" out of it and glue it to the back of the "key surround" of the ignition switch, then remove the "pill' from your "key in the post key" and they will both work....no programming ness..

This hack should work as it fools the ignition into thinking a valid key is being inserted into the ignition slot. Keep in mind all other keys will have to have the RFI pill removed. if you dont go this route, you have to obtain a code either from a dealer or a third party automotive locksmith who is authorized by Porsche who will then provide them an authorizing code. I recently purchased a key from a third party locksmith who has an inventory of Porsche key blanks and fobs. He purchased the code for my car from Porsche in Atlanta based on my VIN and cut and programmed my key. It cost me $390 cdn

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info. Yes I do have one working key. The hack is very interesting. They certainly dont make it easy!

POST 7Original post

Be aware that the hack also removes any anti-theft function the coded keys provide.

Yea, thats the purpose, you still have the "high security laser cut keys" for security , but you do away with the expensive "electronic security"... Since the OP was buying a key from "key in the post" I though he mite like to save a few hundred $$ ....Thieves who are looking to "steal" will still be thinking to hack the electronic security to do their thievery.. I could train my granddaughter to be able to steal your 996 in 10min with all the Factory security in place.. The best security is simple Custom hidden toggle switch, to interrupt the start circuit, the ignition circuit or the fuel circuit that is hidden in a place that only you know where it is...

I like this - any suggestions on a how to you can post or PM?

POST 10Original post

Easiest way is to tap into an ECU, ignition, or fuel injection fuse and add a toggle switch and fuse elsewhere. I did this with my BMW 135i. I used a blown fuse and 2 fuse taps glued to the fuse. The wires(attached to the taps) went to a switch under the dash. I also added an inline fuse that was easier to get to. The BMW 135i fuse panel is a huge PIA to get to. Most fuses have to be pulled/reinstalled by feel because once you shove your arm on the access hole, you can no longer see what you're doing without a borescope.

Does removing the pill from the fob affect remote door locking/unlocking?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source posts: 18319015, 18319065

Like Tex said, taping in to a fuse is the easiest way. Example ; Fuse C3 ( eng electronics) on 996.1 sends 12v to all fuel injectors, Maf, TPS ,O2 sensors, literally every sensor on the engine that has 12v to it, So if you just switch that off, nothing on the engine will work..( and stores no codes).. Really though you can get as creative as you want, the Sky is the limit and only YOU will know what you've done or where the "switch " is.. Nope..

This works great and have done this on a 996 I just sold and of course I told the next owner. If you want to save money this is a great hack. Granted you do lose some security measures.
