So the car we bought, MY99 996 cabriolet has an issue with the convertible top. I know this is not that unusual, but the local independent shop took a look and said they preferred not to touch it. Something is off and they did not want to go down a rabbit hole, their words, trying to fix something they were not specialized in. So I called a few other places near me and ended up taking it to the nearest dealer for them to take a look. They also indicate something is way off and that someone may have made repairs using other than Porsche parts and it may well require a complete replacement of the mechanism and gears. Waiting on a quote for that, but thought it best to poll the members for advice and a possible recommendation on another shop to try that has a lot of experience with these? I am in NC, but would be willing to go another state away north or south for the right shop. I appreciate the advice and any recommendations.
So I got a video from the tech looking at the top and he shows where they found a broken part on the frame where someone has attached a brace in an attempt to fix it. They have managed to source the correct part and are going to install that and see where it takes us, so for now I will go ahead. Thanks for the replies and suggestions and I will keep them handy in case.
I just used Prestige in Anaheim, CA, for my 2000 Boxster replacement top installation because of the recommendations on this forum. I bought my top from autotopsdirect and brought it to them. I�m a happy customer with the quality of work and responsiveness. The price is not cheap but they do many Boxsters and 911�s so they don�t have to figure it out and you know the work will be perfect, so it�s worth every dollar. They were very accommodating with drop off in non-
business hours (I�m 65 miles from them) and responded quickly to any questions I had.
