Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
A better question to ask is what is an essential tool list for tasks like exhaust replacement, oil changes, brake pad and rotor changes, bumper cover removal, interior trim work, light engine peripherals work, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Replace brake pad and rotor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace brake pad and rotor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Also replacing the engine mounts is relatively simple

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've never had time to work on my own cars until picking up my 996 last year. I got it sorted with a professional mechanic after purchasing it because it came with some more significant issues (needed IMS replacement, AOS replacement, cam solenoid oil leak), but now I'm eager and ready to start learning to work on my own car.
Other than an oil change, what are some other routine maintenance tasks that are relatively simple to try so I can start building some experience and skill without causing catastrophic failure?
OP - The 996 is a very good DIY car IF you acquire the right tools. Lots of peeps on this site have “been there, done that” and are very willing to help you get list together. My wife didn’t mind me spending money on tools which have helped me save thousands of dollars and countless hours of down time by not having either Porsche at a mechanic’s. A better question to ask is what is an essential tool list for tasks like exhaust replacement, oil changes, brake pad and rotor changes, bumper cover removal, interior trim work, light engine peripherals work, etc. You’ll find a plethora of on-line tutorials for literally anything to do with the car.
A hard copy Bentley’s manual and the Dempsey 101 project book are nice to have. Some basic tools specific for your 996 work include, just the tip of the iceberg here, items like:
24mm socket for serpentine belt and some other things, a breaker bar at least 18”, 22mm thin wrench for O2 sensors, Torx handled drivers (10 thru 30 at least), Torx bit set, 1/4 and 3/8 (small and large values) torque wrenches, 19mm soft socket for wheels, magnetic bowl for holding fasteners and small tools, brake pad spreader, Hazlet socket (filter cap) for oil filter, plastic trim tools, digital tire pressure gauge (this car’s super sensitive regarding tire pressure), the proper size hex bit for the fluid drain plugs, Motive, or similar, brake bleeder.
EDIT: Huge omission! A comprehensive OBDII scanner.
I agree with this. Motor mounts were very satisfying once done. It did require a 2 meter breaker bar though and me on my back with my leg for leverage off the tire. Replace your drain plug is an easy thing to do. Replace with this magnetic one to monitor any crap in your oil:
Billet Stainless Steel Magnetic Drain Plug for Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, & Cayenne Models (18 x 1.5)
Other easy: air filter, cabin filter, MAF, LED replacement bulbs in frunk and back deck.
