I used a right angle on screen to give me as much room as I can get.

Not a huge amount of progress, I've been adjusting models to get them a little more updated and stronger in some places.

Suggestion
I am going to be having some tim eoff work and was thinking of something similar or to try and decode the CANBUS and totally replace the old LCD A/C control unit.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm just about to start 3d printing my GT3 delete, I have a double din headunit already but instead of relocating the HVAC to an ugly box mounted under dash or in glove box etc im hoping to do it differently.
Why hasn't anyone split the HVAC unit? The screen and buttons seem to be connected with only a serial type pc cable, so could easily be remote mounted making a GT3 delete a much easier conversion.
With a small change to the vertical face of the delete I'm sure an extra 20mm or so could be accommodated and the screen/buttons fixed flush with the main pcb mounted vertically behind or up in the dash somewhere.
I'm not too worried about accessibility and don't mind having to lean forward to reach it, but i do prefer the delete to look good and more as originally intended.
I'm all about the modding spirit, but why not just use a single-din head unit...as originally intended?
Double-din was necessary back in the day to get a nav screen and a crapload of internal components.
Fast forward 20+ years and there are some great single-din head units available now and double-din is kinda unnecessary overkill being that our phones have nav in them on the infrequent occasions that we use it for navigation.
Here's what I did (removed double-din CarPlay and used single-din):
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post19414078
My stack is now:
- HVAC Controls
- Single-din Radio
- Cubby (phone goes here)
- Cubby
And I haven't missed the CarPlay that was in there prior. Read my thoughts on the conversion in the thread. Basically, the location of the radio isn't ideal for viewing anyway. Ideal for touching with the fingers, but not viewing with the eyes. It was like reading a map that was down at your knees. Modern cars noticed this and put the screens up high
on top
of the dash.
Again, I appreciate your DIY spirit. I'm a software engineer and a big consumer of Apple products. But I think you are just making a bad situation worse. The optimal solution for you is probably:
- HVAC Controls
- Single-din Radio
- GT3 Console Delete
- Phone holder somewhere in the cockpit.
Bonus saved for the end: There are some single-din CarPlay head units out there, if you really want CarPlay.
Go to post #582 here to see the discussion of an inexpensive single-din carplay unit:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post19424072
Also, Porsche makes one, too for the older cars, but it's $$$ and doesn't have RCA outs.
Thanks for that informed post, but I prefer to keep my android auto double din and i'm not that interested in cubby's etc as my phone just remains in my pocket.
I just wanted a better solution to the massive hvac control unit that people seem to have issues with.
Relocating it to a glovebox is just weird, but keeping it down low basically just further back than it is currently works a lot better in my situation I think.
I'm not afraid to cut/shut things or mess with electronics, i've done plenty of that in the past.
I'll start modding shortly, and post my progress. I'm sure it will help others in a similar situation.
Well I've started doing my 3d prints and getting this organised. Quite easy, just need to get an extended serial cable tomorrow to extend screen lead. Will hide main unit under dash.
Printed a test piece and then cut a slot out to fit the screen and buttons. Screens fits easily in the space just behind the console delete. I've remodelled the piece in Fusion and will print a new copy once I'm satisfied it's all sorted.
Will wrap in carpet as required.
test fit print
Mark and cut
test cut out
in place, fits no problem. main unit will be hidden up behind dash
waiting on a new screen, screen only connected with serial cable. easy to extend with a new one
Did you print this based on a 3D file floating around out there? Im curious how much and what type of resin you needed. I dont know too much about 3D printing but I have another Porsche 996 friend who does so I want to try it out.
Yes based on files from Thingiverse here:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6163642
Depending on how you print it (infill etc) amount of filament will vary.
So I decided to solder on a new connector on the screen part to allow me to easily unplug it. Easy enough to do. New cable 16 core idc and plug/connector to suit. I used a right angle on screen to give me as much room as I can get. Left the standard connector on the main unit. Waiting on some more filament and I'll reprint the main back piece and start to get it all back together. Oh and waiting on my new screen obviously too!
it works!
Cut the existing unit down so the circuit board is protected. Hid it up under the dash and cable tied in position.
I've adjusted some of the 3d printer files and will upload when I've finished tweaking them, currently everything is installed back in the car and working as normal.
Waiting on new lcd and then the amended 3d printed part once complete.
Thinking of getting a grey filament and then I might not even need to cover it?
Not a huge amount of progress, I've been adjusting models to get them a little more updated and stronger in some places.
I'm using part of the existing housing to help give more support to the unit in the cutout.
Printing is done and a version is now installed in the car, I will get some grey vinyl shortly and upholster to suit.
I'll post completed pictures when done
One could use the small circle BT receivers that show up in Singer cars. I've seen someone here use it in the cigarette lighter spot. It's basically a ****. Really cool.
I don't have any info about it. It's very neat, though. I'm considering it if I go with the GT3 console delete. This would allow me to use one din for HVAC controls and the second din as a cubby.
I can't recall where I saw it. If anyone is interested, maybe ask in here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...s-in-here.html
So the new screen arrived, quick install and its so much clearer. Lost Manuell though!
Busy few weekends coming up so might not get a chance to cover the console delete for a while.
Okay everyone, I decided to paint this instead of vinyl or carpet. Also painted the centre console to tie it all together. New printed head unit surround also. very happy with it all.
This looks very cool... I am going to be having some tim eoff work and was thinking of something similar or to try and decode the CANBUS and totally replace the old LCD A/C control unit. This seems like the way to go.
Any tips for printing this? Orientation, modifying the STL etc? I have a lot of AM experience since it's what I do for work but any tips from someone who has used this STL would save me lots of filament
I have a Prusa XL and petg as well as petg with carbon and PC carbon and nylonX(carbon).
Did anyone modify the STL to make this stronger or work better or did the part file work as is? I'm not looking to do the HVAC mod you did with double din.
Yeah I printed in petg 0.32 layer height. The little cap piece doesn't fit well at all, but the main body is great. Been running it since December. Going to carpet wrap it once Im satisfied it won't fail or crack. I have the fusion file so might do a little editing of it.
@SimJen
, this looks fantastic, how is yours holding up?
I called in a favour and had the original file printed, with the intention of modifying it as per your first prototype. After re-reading, it looks like you made another iteration with the cut out and reinforced areas? Do you mind sharing how you edited the STL, if not your amended files?
Hi Alex, thanks. Yes mine is holding up well, still looks good.
I did modify in fusion, and reprinted. File works but still could do with adjustment to be perfect as it has some messy geometry behind the visible stuff.
File is attached, just rename file type to .stl to use it for printing.
I just wanted to share in case it helps anyone else with this: I didn't want to solder new connectors onto the board, and I found it really hard to find male IDC connectors for the ribbon cable to enable the extension. Eventually, I found some:
5pcs 2.54MM IDC Type Box Header Male Headers 10/14/16/18/20/30/34/40/50 PIN Connector for 1.27mm Pitch Flat Cable
