Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coils were already the upgraded 997 variety, but I replaced them anyway.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ignition coils' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ignition coils' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Based on some quick research, I replaced the spark plugs and coils.

Another to test is: Disconnect the MAF and see if the car runs better on default map.

I am not an engine expert - my DIY skills so far are mostly brakes, oil changes, replacing MAF, etc.

Interestingly, when I depressed the gas pedal slowly, the RPM's would increase but then go back to idle without me changing the pressure on the gas pedal at all.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all - 1999 996.01, looking for some recommendations for basic things to try before I flatbed this thing over to my indy shop. I am not an engine expert - my DIY skills so far are mostly brakes, oil changes, replacing MAF, etc. At the beginning of the month, I was driving on the tollway, all was fine until the engine started vibrating on throttle application and the CEL lit up. Was only a couple miles from home, so limped home and hooked up y durametric.
Codes: P0300 (Misfire damaging to cat. converter), P0304 (Cylinder 4 misfire damaging to cat. converter), P1319 (Misfire emissions-relevant), P1316 (Cylinder 4 misfire emissions-relevant)
Based on some quick research, I replaced the spark plugs and coils. Plugs were 5 yrs old and seemed fine. Coils were already the upgraded 997 variety, but I replaced them anyway. All to proper torque. NGK 6418 plugs, Bremi 20767 coils. Started the car, same four fault codes.
Based on more research:
Misfire counter: the ME5.2.2 module on Durametric doesn't report misfire counters, so I couldn't look at that.
Camshaft deviation: Camshaft 1 deviation is -2 or -3 degrees. Camshaft 2 deviation is 2 to 3 degrees.
FRA for cylinder 4 to 6 was 1.02
TRA2 for cylinder 4 to 6 was 0.06
O2 sensor for bank 1 was solid 1.0, 2 was varying a bit more. In one log it was 0.02 to 0.13, 2nd log it was 0.04 to 0.78
MAF is 1.5ish at idle, up to 2.0ish at 2500 RPM
Ignition timing seemed all over the place. When I logged it today it varied between 5 and 10 at idle, and jumped to about 37 degrees at 2500 RPM.
Last week I was trying to diagnose the issue, I cleared the codes, the msifire in 4 went away but 5 and 6 appeared. Was doing a bit more diagnostic stuff today, pics shown below of my logs if it helps. Interestingly, when I depressed the gas pedal slowly, the RPM's would increase but then go back to idle without me changing the pressure on the gas pedal at all. When I took my foot off the pedal, the engine sputtered and died. I had an MAF issue befre and this seemed like similar behavior. Clearly something wrong with air/fuel mixture or timing in bank 2. But I ended the day with misfires in 4 and 6.
Things I could do:
Let my wallet suffer while my indy diagnoses and fixes it. I'm getting close to this already - I don't need a car every day but this is the only car that's "mine"
Remove and reinstall the plugs and coils on Bank 2
Remove and replace the MAF
what else?
Log 1
If problem appears on only one bank, it's something that the engine has two of, one for each bank. For you car, that is cam position sensors, Variorum actuators, Variocam solenoid.
1. Cam position sensor
2. Cam solenoid
3. Cam actuator
is in the order of least to most expensive. Go from there.
Is the cylinder 4 coil wires seated well on the coil (with a 'click')? If not, you'll get misfires on that cylinder.
Another to test is: Disconnect the MAF and see if the car runs better on default map. If yes, then your MAF is faulty - always get the Bosch unit...
Hopefully one of the above works and you can dignose it by your self for cheap of fairly cheap.
